UPDATE #4: We're adding two new Kickstarter backer rewards: for $250 dollars, get taken out on a date* by the director! And now for $1000 you get the full package of rewards plus an original three-minute love song written and performed for you!
But what better way to share the news than through a video dating VHS service? Watch on…
How could you say no to a face like that? Now that you’ve gotten to know me a little better, I hope to get to know you through the magic of Kickstarter. Help support independent cinema and get a free meal? Sounds like a deal to me!
*My wonderful girlfriend Zoë Moss has sanctioned the use of the word “Date” and has given this reward tier her blessing.
UPDATE #7: We're starting a new feature where we profile the incredible crew that's come together to make "Expiration Date." Click here to learn about our amazing editor Suraj Das!
Expiration Date is a quirky comedic thesis short about a lovelorn and desperate mathematician, Max, who has determined that our world is a simulation and has begun to “decode” it with a secret formula.
As he abuses his theorem to hit on women at the local bar, Max encounters a mysterious stranger, Cassie, who informs him that the end is coming and only Max’s formula can stop it.
With the clock ticking, Max fears there isn’t enough time to save the day, but there may be enough time to save himself — if he can get Cassie to fall in love with him!
This narrative short is a USC thesis project directed by Jacob Strick. The story is a mind-bending romance, filled with comical twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the very end. At its core, Expiration Date is a small, focused two-character piece that explores all the highs and the lows of a relationship in a condensed span of time.
For filming we have assembled an awesome team of incredibly talented and award-winning USC students, including Emmy-winning DP Matthew Halla. Pre-production has been taking place for months and nearly all the pieces are in place, but we need your help to see it through!
We are seeking funds for 5 days of principal photography around Los Angeles this July. Your donations will help pay for equipment rental, location fees, set decoration, and many other production expenses.
As we get closer to production, we'll be giving all our Kickstarter backers an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the making of Expiration Date! And for those who pledge in the $500 or larger categories will receive special mention in the credits of the film under a Kickstarter "Saved The Day" banner.
Many of the short films I’ve made at USC have to do with relationships and loss, and Expiration Date is no exception. But the scope of this film allows me to tackle some larger questions about the meaning of our lives. Though we all live with uncertainty of what is to come, we all want to believe that we have some degree of control over our future. The protagonist Max represents someone who believes they are fully in control of their destiny, but learns though the unknown may be frightening it can also lead to our most joyous experiences. I’m so excited to tell this story and to share it with you, and I thank you all so much for your support.
Risks and challenges
A project of this size and complexity can only take place with the support of a group. Filmmaking is a collaboration, and it's no less true now in this crucial fundraising phase. Help us fulfill our vision of a uniquely original story that runs the gamut from laughter to tears and back again. All of us are ready to take on challenge of making the film, but if we don't reach our fundraising goal the film can not be made. From the bottom of our hearts we thank you for your time and for your donation.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
