Stories about an everyday friendship, that end with a humorous punchline, written for older children still learning to read.
I'm a Children's Librarian in a small town library. One of my favorite parts of the job is helping kids find books that appeal to them. A while back, a fifth grade boy with a first grade reading level came in to find a book for his summer reading. Most of the books that he could read were too heavily illustrated and were made to appeal to a first grader. The books that appealed to him were much too difficult for his ability. The boy went away empty handed. (I felt like I failed him!)
I decided to write some stories for him. He used them at his summer reading camp and they proved to be helpful! I got great feedback from parents and teachers alike! I was encouraged enough to send the stories off to publishers. I got some encouragement in that they told me to "Get an agent!", but that proved to be much more time consuming than I realized.
Fast forward to now. I'm enlisting the help of my graphic designer husband who had solid illustration skills so we can publish it ourselves. It will be a 32-page paperback book with easy-to-read type and minimal illustrations. I'm confident it gives this under-served group of kids a series of stories that will help build their reading skills. I've also learned that it works well for the precocious younger reader who wants to read older kid's books that are too advanced for them.
The ISBN fees will eat up a good portion of what little we have to pay for printing. I'm hoping the good people of the Kickstarter community can help me reach my goal of helping kids find a good book to read.
Thank you so much!
