About this project
In April 2013, I will begin my mostly self funded solo motorbike adventure starting in Perth, Australia and ending in Tallinn, Estonia. The journey is expected to take 12 months crossing some of the most remote and culturally rich locations in the world. This trip is a once in a lifetime motorcycle photographic adventure, and I'd like you to be a part of it...
Using a KTM 690 Enduro R 2012 adventure motorbike customised specifically for this trip and a professional Nikon D3s with 14-24mm, 24-70mm and 70-200mm lenses, I intend to capture this amazing and risky 12 month adventure in full format photography to create a marvellous coffee table Photo Book.
Previously I have travelled to nearly 50 countries, most of which are 2nd and 3rd world countries. I choose these countries because it is there that I more often experience the vividly intense nature of life & death and the worlds most natural beauty. A selection of images taken from past adventures can be seen on my photography website www.imagealchemy.com.au.
The rewards offered to the right of this page, give you the option to buy a combination of 4 valuable concepts that will involve you in the project. These concepts are explained below:
1) Photo Challenge Credits: Photo challenges are the centre piece of the project. Photo challenges are your way of being directly involved in the adventure and for ensuring your very own customised images are captured, all without having to leave home. You can direct me to take any image you please so long as it is not too criminal, too dangerous or too financially draining.
Essentially, your Photo Challenges will help to guide the adventure by influencing where I travel along the way. The amount of Photo Challenge Credits you receive depend on which Reward you choose. This project is not about profit - it is about adventure, photography and your participation.
Example 1 - you want a picture of Angkor Wat at night time with the nights sky shining vividly in the background: I could get permission from the local authorities or if declined, I would happily climb the walls to sneak in at night and take this picture.
Example 2 - you want a picture of an old Indian shaman with a long grey beard, starring intently, mysteriously back at you: In India this should be fairly easy to achieve.
Example 3 - you want a playful picture of indigenous children splashing around in a remote river with sunlight brightly illuminating water droplets and their happy faces: I'd find a remote village and time of day to do this.
Example 4 - you want a picture of me standing next to the KTM in the desert with a sign saying "Warning - Landmines": This may be too dangerous but I will try to complete the challenge by finding a local guide for safety.
Hint: If you are not sure what photos to request, then search the internet for images from locations near my current position. Perhaps watch the movie "Baraka" or "Samsara". These should give you some great ideas.
If for whatever reason I feel that your Photo Challenge is not possible (too criminal, too dangerous or too costly), I will inform you as soon as practically possible whilst re-crediting you a Photo Challenge Credit.
2) Your Customised Photobook: The physical product that you may get, depending on the reward selected, is a hard cover landscape photo book with all the best photographs taken along the way. The centrepiece to your customised book will be the Photo Challenge pictures you requested.
Each photo book and photograph will be of the highest quality. Examples of the photo books quality can be viewed on Photobook Worldwide's website; click here.
3) Electronic Copies: You will receive the electronic version of your Photo Challenges in JPG format for personal use on canvas, art paper, etc.
The highest reward buyers will receive the electronic versions of their photos in full RAW image format. This guarantees image ownership and maximum image manipulation options for business use anywhere around the world. This option is ideal for businesses or professionals wanting unique and customised stock photos for art, advertising and marketing.
4) DeLorme inReach Data: As a solo adventurer, I will be travelling with a special GPS device developed by DeLorme inReach. This device allows me to be located by GPS on any map, and importantly for me, it has an SOS function for emergency's. All project sponsors will receive frequent GPS location updates which can be used to track my movements on mapping services provided by DeLorme inReach or Google Earth. In this way, you can send me (or even change) a Photo Challenge specifically for the country or region I am currently in.
The countries which I intend to travel are as follows (in order):
Australia > Timor > Indonesia > Malaysia > Borneo > Thailand > Cambodia > Vietnam > Laos > Bhutan > Nepal > India > India (Tibet) > Pakistan > (then one of three possible routes) - "The Stans", "Iran to Turkey", "Oman to North Africa" > towards Estonia.
Its important to know that your Photo Challenges will change the way I travel around the world!
Risks and challenges
The greatest risks to the project are serious injury and death. I have travelled for many years. I have already broken my neck once on a motorbike and am extremely aware of issues surrounding rider safety. I have ridden for many years offroad. Due to this experience, I am confident that I have the skills necessary to travel difficult and remote terrain solo without serious incident.
This project is mostly self funded. All funding provided to this project from people like yourself will be kept in a dedicated project account to meet the costs associated with producing your individual rewards once the adventure is complete. The funds will not be used during the adventure unless it becomes absolutely necessary to ensure the successful completion of the journey and project.
I aim to ensure as many elements from each Photo Challenge Credit are incorporated into the final image; as is reasonably and practically possible. Therefore, to manage your expectations, it would be best that Photo Challenge Credits are defined as more generalised ideas and are not too specific in nature.
I have many years experience in travel and photography. I use the best equipment money can buy and am absolutely committed to creating a professionally handcrafted photographic collection for your enjoyment.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
