Climate change is a difficult topic to discuss with kids. But we can't avoid it. It’s the defining issue of our times and our children’s futures are at the centre of it.
As parents, we want to talk to our kids about what’s happening to our planet, but we don’t want to scare them senseless at bedtime. Or bore them into apathy by reading them dry academic material. Or give them reason to be angry, without also giving them the tools to manage their strong emotions.
We looked for a kids’ book to help us discuss the issue of climate change and discovered… there wasn’t one.
We realized we’d have to make one ourselves.
So we - a storyteller and a climate scientist - joined forces to write a book to communicate to kids about climate change. But more importantly, to inspire them to do something about it. With us, working together.
We also wanted to avoid adding to the problem. And so, carbon neutrality became a central goal for this project.
This book will be printed on 100% recycled materials, using soy inks, in a printing facility run on renewable energy, with no waste going to landfill, and carbon offset shipping. Every effort is being made at every stage of production and fulfilment to bring a book to you that not only has a strong message, but that lives and breathes it.
Hi! This is us. Megan Herbert and Michael E. Mann.
We’re both life-long communicators, Michael in the field of science, and Megan as a writer and illustrator. Despite coming from different backgrounds, we share the same purpose: to communicate about climate change to children in a way that educates and empowers them to make a real difference.
We’re both parents. We love our kids. We worry about the state of the world that we’re passing onto them. And we want them to know that, as much as we wish it weren’t the case, we have a big mountain to climb if we’re going to overcome the climate crisis. And it is a crisis. If we don’t act to significantly and quickly reduce carbon emissions and change our global habits, the world future generations inherit from us will be one of scarcity, extreme weather, and social unrest.
But how to communicate all this to children?
We know that to hold children’s attention on challenging topics, you must first capture their imaginations, leaving them open to learning more. This is the principle underpinning the structure of this book.
To capture kids' imaginations, is a story about a little girl who comes face to face with an enormous challenge, feels all kinds of frustration as she tries to overcome it, and then channels those strong emotions into action, rallying all those around her to do the same.
Following this engaging, relatable tale, comes the explanation of the science of climate change in language that children can understand, telling the stories of the climate refugees that appear in the story, and how all their lives are interconnected.
An Action Plan then outlines simple and positive steps every person can take to make a real difference and to become the heroes of their own stories.
- It's carbon neutral.
- It’s a story book, a science book, and an action plan.
- It gives kids practical advice, empowering them.
- The protagonist struggles through adversity and solves her own problems.
- It teaches kids that there is strength in numbers and power in cooperative effort.
This book is created by professionals in their field. The storytelling is exciting and well-structured. The writing is lyrical and engaging, with the fiction section presented in rollicking rhymes to keep children hooked into the story. The non-fiction section is based on meticulously-researched and peer-reviewed science, tempered and communicated in simple terms that children can understand. The illustrations complement and enhance the text, bringing it all together in a book that your children will want to hear again and again.
We've already written the text and created the artwork. We have our book designer waiting in the wings. We're in conversation with a carbon neutral printing house and are investigating the most carbon efficient methods to fulfil our deliveries to you. Any carbon we can't manage to cut off at the source, we will offset. It's all part of the cover price of the book. So you can rest easy knowing you're not only talking the talk, but walking the walk.

Risks and challenges
Here’s what we’ve taken care of already:
- Text and images for the book.
- First draft of the World Saving Action Plan poster.
- We’ve found our carbon neutral printers and fulfilment partners.
What’s left to do:
- Final editing and proofing of the text.
- Professional scanning of the art work.
- Book design. (We have a book designer – a specialist in children’s books - ready and waiting.)
- Once we know how many of you are on board, we will be able to finalise shipping and fulfilment details to arrange the most sustainable and carbon-economical way to get the books from printing press to you. On schedule, as promised.
Although first-time Kickstarters ourselves, we have consulted closely with several crowdfunding veterans in order to avoid any pitfalls that might slow us down or stop us from keeping our promises to you.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
