I just wanted to say an enormous "well done!" for the project and thank-you for keeping me updated on your progress. It's been a real privilege to follow the evolution of your book from the very start and to finally read it, knowing that you put heart and soul into every page. I cannot believe how it's all taken flight since the first tentative moments with Kickstarter - and that photo-covered van is just awesome! Best wishes from this side of the Atlantic and keep us all posted if/when you come to England.

Robert and all who've commented here since my last post, thank you so much for your kind words—I can't express enough how cool and happy I feel that so many of you take the time to share your thoughts and pleasure you've found in FORKS! Even more that many of cooked recipes, shared the book with others and more. I hope to be on the road this summer promoting the general edition of the book and getting FORKS on more tables! Thank you all for making FORKS a reality :)

      Allan ~
Literally just received my copy of the book and postcards (and that awesome bookmark) and had to put it down long enough to say "well done, sir!"

It was a pleasure to learn more about your adventure and to help provide the funds to enable you to make your project a reality and share your stories with the world.

Hi Louis! Thanks so much for your note. I am so glad the book exceeded your expectations. The idea of short narrative vignettes was so that readers could digest the book in small chunks—while the story threads throughout, the chapters can stand on their own.

Many readers are posting comments on my Facebook page — many with pics of their book(s) — so if you, and other backers who receive this, are so inclined, I'd love to to see you and FORKS! - Thanks again for your note! :)

Hey! Everyone -- Allan is just $2500 away -- if everyone kicked in (no pun intended) another $5 he would go sailing over the goal and wouldn't have to cut up his riding jacket. Do you know how hard it is to find a great riding jacket. SAVE THE JACKET! He's got my $5!

I love to cook and taste good food. I love to visit new places, but when that's not possible, photographs tickle my taste buds for travel. I love to tell and hear a good story. I love to ride my motorcycle over hill and dale on back roads everywhere. Connecting with others is why we are here. I'm stoked for Allan and I'm excited to read, see and taste the fruits of his journey. Here's toward the 'finish line' Allan!

The man behind this project, Allan Karl, is one of those people who showed up in my life out of nowhere. His story, courage and passion inspired me to live out my dreams.

He shut down his successful business and took off for 3 years on a quest to explore the cultures of the world, experience their cuisine and to discover the connection that exists between all of us. Since meeting him, I did the same... shut down a bustling ad agency to explore all the beauty of this planet :) It was the best thing I ever did.

I am so grateful for friends like Allan to set the example, let go and trust!!

Please show support to help bring his story to the world!

    37. David Hatfield on September 30, 2013

A little over one year ago I was on my monthly business trip from San Diego to Denver. Shortly after takeoff the man seated next me began flipping through photos on his Ipad. I took a few quick glances and was struck by the incredible photography of people and places from all across the world. For the next 20 minutes I caught myself glancing back and forth at his screen and wondering about the story behind theses images..what photobook had he downloaded? I had to have it! That's when I saw an image that changed the course of the flight and massively influenced the actions I'm taking with my life today.

There he was, the man sitting next to me, standing aside what appeared to be two rebel soldiers in the middle of the jungle. He was holding one of their assault riffles with a huge smiles on all thief faces. I immediately pulled out my headphones and demanded to know more about these images!! Are these all your photos? Your travels? .... The conversation flowed naturally and soon these incredible pictures had a story. The man (Allan Karl) began to tell me his tale, the story of his travels around the world solo on a motorcycle for 3 years. Chills and goosebumps came with each new image and story. My eyes, ears and mind were simultaneously captivated for the first time in years! We spent the next two hours lost in the images together bouncing from one incredible story to the next. As the flight came to an end, we exchanged info to stay in contact and parted ways. From this brief encounter, I had made a new friend, mentor and someone to encourage my own wild ideas about packing it all away and traveling the world.

Weeks later, over breakfast, he told me of his struggles with publishers and explained the difficulties in his early attempts to get a book completed through "traditional channels". This is when I asked if he had considered crowd funding or more specifically, Kickstarter. I had seen so many amazing and not-so-amazing projects get the funding they needed to launch over the previous years. I knew if we could tell the stories I had heard, his efforts and dream could be realized. The pages could finally be printed and shared with the world. I found myself compelled to be part of his quest to turn the images and stories into a book.

It was at this point I decided to volunteer my time to help with image selection, editing and the basics of the Kickstarter campaign including the video. I did these things because of all the people and stories I have heard over the years, this one really deserved to be shared. I knew immediately that this book could and WILL inspire many others. A book that will bring the experiences of his tremendous journey into people's lives and homes.

Here we are a year later, all images finalized, stories written and pages laid out. This thing is beautiful and ready to print! The Kickstarter page launched just a few days ago... it's very exciting! Please take a moment to look at the page and video we put together about his amazing journey. (Link is the first comment on this post) It's a short video that immerses you into the book, on the road with Allan during these 3 life changing years. This is a must-have book for all who are interested in the world around them. From the people to the culture and cuisine, this book is a full package and is as close as it gets to the travel itself.

I am confident this book WILL inspire and change many people's lives as it has already made a profound and tangible impact on mine! As most of you already know, I set out on a one year journey last month following my dreams to explore this beautiful planet... pushing myself and my photography out of the comfort zone and into the unknown. This book, the stories and images within were all a huge source of inspiration for me to take that leap.

And here I sit, in a small restaurant in Bali, writing about this incredible man whose story inspired my own life transformation. His path has greatly inspired me and is sure to inspire others. Life is short and precious. Surround yourself with people and things that inspire you, things that remind you that anything is possible and that your dream can be your reality the moment you decide to make it happen.

After following the Worldrider blog during Allan's journey I am excited to see that his experience is going tangible. Not only will I be able to share the amazing photographs with family and friends (when they pick up the hard copy off the coffee table) but I am able to put things in context with unique and authentic dishes that originates across the globe. That is ... if I am able to pull off the recipes without major blunders in the kitchen!

    39. Angelique Walters on September 25, 2013

Wow! Forks has absolutely stimulated ALL of my senses! I love the fact that you can pick up this lovely book, choose a country and create a scrumptious meal together with family and friends. This is what I grew up with in a large Italian family... Lots of laughs and stories shared over the dinner table. I am so excited to have the hard copy in my hands and I will shared with the loved ones around me who truly appreciate these moments as much as I do!

Have you ever just wanted to pack up and go see the world? Connect with other people? Immerse yourself in the cultures and wonders of the world? My friend of more than four decades, Allan Karl, did exactly that. Whether or not you wish to fund this kickstarter, do yourself a favor and watch the video. Allan's spirit, interest, smile and talent are incredibly inspirational. I dare you to watch and not contribute something!! Truth be known, I want YOU to join me in funding this project because I cannot wait for my own copy, nor for the couple dozen or so that I plan to give as gifts. Really, just watch the video. It will be the nicest thing you've done for yourself all day.
