The World of Steam is a set of Twilight Zone-like episodes set in a Steampunk Universe.
The World of Steam is a new Webseries that sets out to explore the deep recesses of a Steampunk world. Drama, Comedy, Horror, Science Fiction and Fantasy are all explored against the backdrop of a futuristic Victorian Age.
We've loved Steampunk for years: Jules Verne, HG Wells, HP Lovecraft, Neal Stephenson, China Mieville, GD Falksen - we could go on and on - but we weren't seeing the worlds they described in their writing portrayed on screen. So we decided to create The World of Steam.
How to show a world so vast with so many stories? By following in the footsteps of our heroes and making a new anthology series. An anthology series like The Twilight Zone, Amazing Stories, Tales From the Darkside, or Jim Henson's Storyteller. We felt that when looking at this incredible Steampunk universe, the best way to approach it would be by peering through the keyhole of our existence into the strange new world on the other side.
We've envisioned a place with Jules Verne's technology and Jane Austen's dialogue. A world with Charlotte Bronte's rules and Lovecraft's horror. A place where mad scientists, corseted heroines and bold adventurers could make their way, bringing you truly unforgettable characters, beautiful stories, and vistas like you've never seen.
The World of Steam is Directed, Produced and Written by Matt Yang King, winner of the CAPE/Hollywood Foreign Press Young Screenwriters Award and actor on shows such as (24, GI Joe: Renegades, and Numb3rs). He is joined by a crack team of creators: Lisa Lassek, Editor (The Avengers, The Cabin in the Woods); Thomas Surprenant, Makeup FX (Emmy winner - Star Trek, Buffy the Vampire Slayer); and Bear McCreary, Composer (Battlestar Galactica, Terminator, The Walking Dead). For the complete credits check out our Facebook Page.
DVDs and CDs!!!
So when we decided to take The World of Steam to Kickstarter, we didn't think that there would be such high demand for DVD or a CD for a Webseries that hadn't come out yet. But boy have you made your voices heard. We couldn't/can't alter the existing incentives so we put in the DVD at the $40 incentive, but some of you wanted to add it on to your existing cool stuff from our World Class Makers (Yes Brassy Steamington, Daniel Proulx and Col. James Von Siegfried I'm talking about you, so stand up and take a bow!). So, here's how it's going to go...
If you are an existing Shipmate, or are a new bidder, and are pledging above the $40 level:
CONTACT ME (Matt):
Either through the Kickstarter messages or at email@example.com and let me know...
- If you would like to add a First Season DVD to your new or existing order, ADD $20 to your Existing Pledge.
- If you would like to add Bear McCreary's awesome CD to your new or existing order, ADD $15 to your Existing Pledge.
- If you would like to add BOTH to your new or existing order, ADD $30 to your Existing Pledge.
I'll verify your current pledge and will personally make sure we add the notation that you get the DVD, CD or both. Thank you guys so much for helping make this a reality. Which brings us to...

What began with a chance meeting between Matt King and Steampunk designers Scott and Gail Folsom in 2009 has now become The World of Steam. This project gathered some of the most inventive and talented industry professionals together to create The Clockwork Heart, the pilot episode. We've come really far, with amazing creatives donating a ton of their time, effort, and expertise to the project.
But we need your help to bring the world to life...
We live in an amazing time. Used to be, if a Medici endorsed your project, they would require control of your content. Today, a new day has dawned. Kickstarter has allowed thousands of artists just like us to bring deep science fiction stories to life and to connect to audiences everywhere, and it also allows you to speak with your dollars.
It's simple. If you like us, help us.
Our goal is to do two things: To bring you the best entertainment that we can, and to offer you some really astounding incentives to show our appreciation.
Your donations will go towards the completion of all post-production of the pilot episode of The World of Steam: The Clockwork Heart: Color Grading, Visual FX, Sound Design, Musical Score, Hiring Musicians, Recording and Marketing. It will also allow us to begin pre-production on the first season of The World of Steam, hiring name actors, making extravagant costumes and props, finding distinct locations and expanding our Visual FX.
Our first season is set for five episodes including The Clockwork Heart. If your generous donations overfund us, we'll be able to bring you a greater scope and breadth to the world and bring you some truly astounding visuals. Every additional $30,000 we make beyond our goal allows us to bring you another episode.
We'll help you (or you can read the official line, here). For the next 30 days, you'll be able to make pledges to support us in our Steamy endeavors, ranging from $1 to whatever you can afford without going to debtors prison. You can select one of the incentives - listed to the right - of equal or lesser value to your pledge. You can always pledge more than the minimum to get an incentive that you particularly crave. Your credit card or other account will not actually be charged at the time that you make your pledge, and you can change your mind any time during the 30 day window.
If the deadline comes and we have reached our goal, then everyone gets charged the amount they pledged at once, and we get to working on making some really cool Steampunk episodes. But if for some reason we don't make our goal, the whole thing just fades away. No one gets charged, no fees are applied; everyone just keeps their money. Of course, if we fail to meet our goal, then no one gets our cool gear either, which we think would be pretty tragic. Not 'return of Cthulhu' tragic, but sad nonetheless, 'cause we think it's some awesome stuff.
For investing in The World of Steam we'd like to offer you our thanks with our special Kickstarter-only Steam Gear. Thanks so much for helping us out!

The dimensional timeship Peleton of the famous (or is it infamous?) Aether Brigade is purportedly powered by a time kraken - the exact nature of this amazing (mythical?) beast is currently unknown, however The Time Kraken pin has been created for those who believe. It is said that perhaps the actual kraken takes a soul every time the Peleton shifts through the vortex, perhaps wearing this brooch upon your person (or even hat) will cause the kraken to overlook your proximity and choose another who is less likely to believe.....

Daniel Proulx was born in Montreal and spent a considerable time traveling the world before returning to his artistic roots, becoming an independent artist in 2008. He loves creating organic shapes from wire and developing intricate designs with a mechanical/industrial feel. When Daniel was little he used to daydream about fantastic imaginary worlds. He would draw monsters, invent stories about magical items, or role-play with friends. Now he brings his art to life with stories from a distant parallel Steampunk universe. Now for The World of Steam he has used his creations to share his passion for the world of Steampunk with the rest of us.

Risks and challenges
We have a great road to travel with 'The World of Steam.' With your generous donations it becomes possible to begin a trip into a land we've dreamed about since we were kids. Not that that land does not have obstacles: Red Barons, mysterious contraptions and strange monsters from the Underdark. And the journey to creating that world is fraught with peril as well. It deals with the more mundane, but sometimes more difficult obstacles of Time, Money and Effort.
Logistical obstacles of finding or building Victorian locations, designing and constructing props, and the heavy lifting of creating worlds within digital space become a daily hardship. Plus, the task of maintaining a fully professional crew and cast for a multitude of episodes can prove daunting.
But we have some nice pluses on our side of the data sheet. We have a strong team in place and serious hitters who bring their 'A' game every time. People who have proven their mettle on projects with no budget, to some of the biggest movies of all time (literally). And we're all incredibly passionate about Steampunk, and truth to tell, about being geeks. Creating these worlds and making things that make people laugh, sigh or shriek couldn't make us happier. And with your help, we can do it.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Manky Salad asks... What will be the approximate running time of each episode? And just to make sure, will the DVD be region free?
The running time for "The Clockwork Heart" the first episode is 14 minutes. I'm aiming for the episodes after to be on a Twilight Zone TV timeframe, which means they will run 24-26 mins each. Of course this all depends on budget, as whenever you add minutes of time to a show, you add shooting days.
As to the DVD, we will be burning them in LA, CA USA. So I don't know if there are region coding rules in effect. If I can avoid them, I will.
