*** Latest News - Goal Reached! ***
We've reached our goal! Thank you so much to those who've supported us so far. If you like the sound of the project below but haven't donated yet, then there's still time! The campaign is open for donations until October 25th, and we guarantee that any money raised above our target will go to composers like Helen in support of their work with us as part of our Audience Commissioning Fund.
We are Workers Union Ensemble, a new music ensemble based around the UK. We first came together in 2008 when we were students at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. Since that point we have spread out all around the UK, and are now spread as far as Fife and Southampton, but we have managed to keep the ensemble together by working on a project by project basis.
In the eight years we have been together, we have commissioned more than twenty new works for the ensemble by both emerging and established composers. Each project has required fundraising of some sort, and we were lucky enough in the past to receive funding from PRSF and Sound and Music in order to run two UK tours in 2013 and 2015.
Our Kickstarter is about raising money for our next project, which is a commission from the exciting young composer Helen Papaioannou. We will be playing at the Nonclassical Monthly Club Night on April 12th 2017, and with your help we will be able to premiere a substantial new work by Helen that night. In addition to her commission, Helen will become our composer-in-association for 2017.
We really enjoy developing close relationships with our composers, and have had three composers-in-association since 2013. This offers composers a unique insight into the way an ensemble like ours works, giving them a chance to develop their writing for our unusual line-up. Our very first composer-in-association Matthew Kaner (2013) was recently selected for BBC Radio 3's new residency, in partnership with Sound and Music 'Composer In 3'. This gave us the fantastic opportunity to record the first piece of his residency 'Collide' for the BBC which is being broadcast this September.
We’re excited to work closely with Helen in the coming year but we need your help to ensure she can be paid properly for her work. Please support us if you can. All the money we raise from this Crowdfunder will go towards Helen’s commission fee, and travel expenses associated with her role as composer-in-association. Thank you.
Risks and challenges
There is a very small risk, as with all live performances that the event may be cancelled due to serious unforeseen circumstances. If this were the case we would ensure a performance of Helen's commission was able to go ahead at a later date.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
