WOWSER! We're funded!
This is great, it means we can get the packs to people who want them. As a final week special reward, I've added a £2 tier ($3) - this gets you a limited edition postcard mailed to you anywhere in the world. This is the perfect reward for those of you who want to support the project but don't have the cash available at the moment for a card deck (or just plain don't like card decks!). You'll have a beautiful bookish picture to put on your wall. I'll mail these in envelopes so as not to ruin the backs and you can mail it to a loved one of your choice if you so wish.
What are you planning to make?
The Library Lover's Playing Cards features a collection of vintage images from the early part of the 20th Century. Each picture was used to promote and advertise libraries to the public and encourage recreational reading. These designs are as evocative today as they were when they were first created.
As a library lover myself, I wanted to get these out into the open and so set about putting the images on playing cards so you can enjoy them too. I have had two prototypes made, each one a beauty. I've firmed up the design and the production and am ready to print my first run. I just need your help...
The deck will feature 51 images from yesteryear (the Ace of Spades will show the company logo) and be printed on a bridge-sized deck with premium card stock. Enclosed in a custom tuck box, all pledge levels shown on the right include international shipping as standard (no fiddly postage maths!).

Who are you?
I'm a writer and former librarian from the UK who loves toys, games and messing about. I write children's books for a living (yeah, I know, jammy right?) but often found my creative mind wondering towards games design.
Yeah, I sometimes get distracted.
I created Word Nerd Games to indulge my love of books and games, so when I was made redundant from my post as a librarian (thanks Coalition Government!) I decided to launch a kickstarter which would help produce my first product. The Library Lover's Playing Cards seemed the perfect debut product; equal parts book lover and game lover.
Where did this project come from?
I came across the one of the images online whilst researching a writing project and was so taken with the poster that I began collecting the images. When Word Nerd Games was launched, my plan was to create game and toy concepts and license them to companies, but the Library Lover's Playing Cards project felt so personal that I wanted to do it myself.
What’s your plan, and what’s your schedule?
The Kickstarter Campaign runs from 13th October to 13th November. If I hit my target, I'll be able to send the design to the printers straight away, and it should be about two weeks before they come back to me. After that, I'll bag'em and address'em and leave them in the hands of the postage gods. Shipping should be 10 days or so to the furthest-flung international backers, meaning it'll be there in time for Christmas
What’s your budget?
I've purposely set a very low goal – just £710. This is the bare minimum needed to produce the minimum order quantity for my chosen print-on-demand publisher. If I exceed that goal, I can look at other digital printers I have had quotes from. If the project goes 'Exploding Kittens' crazy successful, I can have the pick of the litho printers both in UK and abroad (though I'll try to keep it local) and I'll of course invest in better card stock, shinier boxes etc. For the low goal though, I've worked out that I can still break even at the £9 price point, even when offering free postage to the entire planet. (Of course, you're very welcome to pledge a silly amount of money and only claim the £9 reward...)
Why do you care?
I care about books, literature, writing and libraries. I have always said that a library isn't about books; it's about people. It's about communities making connections and learning not just from books and computers, but from each other. Libraries as we know them are under threat every day from budget cuts and a general ambivalence from the public. If just one of the images on the cards helps to inspire or re-ignite the love of libraries in people, driving them towards their local library, I'll consider it a success.
And anyway, I like the look of the deck. I want to hold a copy in my hands and give it to loved ones. Wouldn't you want to get one of these beauties in your stocking? Of course you would. Now, get pledging...
Risks and challenges
I have chosen a printer that produces playing cards exclusively and have had prototypes produced by them so I have seen the product. I am aware that I will be posting the deck at the peak postage season, close to Christmas, so can't guarentee how fast the postal service will deliver the product, but I will ensure that I get the packages posted before the last posting dates.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
