About this project
Wool? Really? I can wear wool in the summer as well as the winter? I thought wool was hot and itchy and only to be worn in cold weather? Not so!! Merino wool is as soft as your favorite cotton t-shirt and keeps you cool in the heat of summer. Let WoolSports clothing change your perception of wool, the natural, comfortable, practical, easy to wear fiber!
WoolSports is a new clothing company that seeks to bring the benefits of wool to the many clothing and sport markets within North America and, eventually, across the globe. Wool stands today, as it did ten thousand years ago - as the premier clothing and textile fiber. Wool is the best fiber for year round comfort in any climate. WoolSports™ aspires to inspire: by connecting a lifestyle “merino” wool brand to active consumers and their passion for sport and outdoors. The company seeks to promote wool as the original, and still the best, performance fabric “for every element of your life!”

With offices in Skaneateles, in the Finger Lakes region of New York State, and manufacturing in Dallas Texas, WoolSports will source wool from Australia and New Zealand to offer customers high-quality, high-value brand apparel and related products.
Most of the sports apparel market still uses synthetics in their "performance" products. Recycled plastic and cotton, regardless of how it was grown, cannot match wool's natural characteristics, however. WoolSports chooses Merino wool because it is an overall superior fiber for sport and every day wear when compared to other fibers, including natural fibers such as cotton.
Wool outperforms so-called "performance apparel" in nearly every metric. Additionally, merino wool represents an investment in the long-term health of our natural environment. Not only is wool "green" in and of itself, but many of its properties can lead to changes in lifestyle that have positive, lasting effects on the environment. Consider laundry; because wool garments do not need to be washed as often as other fibers, household consumption of laundry detergent is greatly reduced. Imagine having to wash clothes only once a month instead of once a week!
The trend toward quality and performance in clothing can be seen in the sport of triathlon, a popular sport that is seeing explosive growth in the United States. To capture this growing market of enthusiasts searching for apparel authenticity, WoolSports has partnered with the Musselman Triathlon in Geneva, NY to increase national awareness of wool's unique performance characteristics. Over the past five years, the Musselman has actively moved away from antiquated, entrenched race production practices that simply do not respond to the needs of the athlete. The first abandoned relic became the cotton t-shirt once found at every race on the planet; instead, race shirts made from alternative fabrics were sought in order to align more closely with the event's goals of environmental sustainability and athlete accountability. Cotton gave way to organic cotton which gave way to bamboo, then bamboo infused with charcoal, then recycled polyester - but none of these provided the moisture wicking, anti-bacterial, anti-odor, cooling, and warmth properties of wool.
Wool does not hold odor. While sweat itself has no odor, if it remains on the skin or in clothing it creates unpleasant odors. Merino reduces the opportunity for odors to generate because it is more efficient than other textiles at absorbing sweat and evaporating it into the air. Merino wool has a much greater capacity than other fibers to absorb moisture. In fact, it can absorb 35% of its own weight in liquid. The moisture is bound within the structure, and so is not available to microbes, which are unable to penetrate the scaly surface of the fiber.
Wool is comfortable to wear
year-round because it's an absorbent fiber that helps regulate body temperature. When the air is cool and damp, wool absorbs moisture and keeps a layer of dry,
insulating air next to the skin. Conversely, when it's warm, that same
absorption capacity takes up perspiration, making the body's natural cooling
system work better.
Wool garments are a great investment. Since wool fibers resist pilling, snagging and breaking, woolen garments typically outlast synthetics. Furthermore, since wool fibers are naturally elastic, woolen garments don't wrinkle, bag or sag out of shape.
Wool is a safe fabric it is the only fiber that naturally resists flaming. Unlike most artificial fibers, which often melt and stick to the skin when on fire, wool will only smolder or char.
So here's where YOU come in. The money raised from Kickstarter will help us cover material, production, promotion, and other necessary expenses for our 2011 product launch. No contribution is too small. All donations will be greatly appreciated. Make a pledge and you'll enjoy wool nirvana: the finest apparel out there, made in the United States from 100% merino wool from Australia and New Zealand. Integrity is important to WoolSports and its customers. With society returning to core values and looking to the natural world for guidance, it follows that wool would be on the leading edge of this movement. We hope that you will be involved!
Change your perception of wool. Change your lifestyle. Change the world!
