Some notes about our printing processes

The Art of Letterpress Printing: For those who don’t know, letterpress printing was the normal form of printing text from its invention by Johannes Gutenberg in the mid-15th century until the 19th century and remained in wide use for books and other uses until the second half of the 20th century. More recently, letterpress printing has seen a revival in an artisanal form and is used for the fine art printing of books, greeting cards, posters, and other artistic purposes. Its distinguishing characteristic is creating a deep impression of the type and image when printed on soft cotton paper.

Inlaid photo prints: Letterpress printing doesn’t allow for reproducing high-quality photographic images so we inlaid a photo on top of the letterpress print. This allows us to produce an archival quality photographic art print while maintaining the luxurious feel of letterpress printing on 100% cotton paper.

OUR STORY

We are Erika Brask and Dan Saal—design partners at Wonderfull Design. We met in college and dated briefly but went off to live separate lives with only the occasional contact. 21 years later we reconnected and fell in love. Erika lived in Denver. Dan lived in Oakland. Sharing these photos of heart shapes we found in the world was a way for us to stay connected and show our love for one another while living apart. Now we want to share them with the you. Our hope is that you will be inspired to share them with the ones you love. A small way to help all of us all feel more connected to one another. Just a simple image of a heart to let that special someone know you are thinking about them and that you care about them.

Erika’s Side of the Story: The last thing on my mind was dating. I was a single mom, raising two daughters, and reorganizing my life. Deep cleaning can reveal things long outgrown, or unnecessary, as well as long forgotten treasures. As I sifted through my belongings, I reconnected with my past self and experiences that helped shape the person I was at that moment. I wasn't expecting to feel such strong feelings of longing when I found some things Danny and I had shared together while attending college at Drake. I made a Facebook post about some things I found, took a chance, and tagged Danny. I was curious to see if he would react (like!) or respond at all. We hadn't spoken in many years. We dated for a time in college and circumstances being what they were, we went our separate ways. We both went on to lead very different lives with different experiences in different places. My facebook post opened up new possibilities between us. In college, we didn't have the immediacy of what iPhones or snapchat now provide. In today's digital reality, we can instantly share our thoughts as often as we want. I collect heart-shaped rocks—a practice of "seeing" that I started in college. I knew Danny would appreciate this so I sent him a photo of part of my rock collection. In return, he sent me a photo of a heart shape on a concrete floor ... and the spark of what we had begun so long ago was rekindled. We met for dinner and the rest, they say, is history. We continue our connection of sharing love through these photographs between us.

Dan’s Side of the Story: Erika was a distant memory—my first true love that I thought was lost to me forever. I thought of her from time to time but I knew she had another life of her own. After Erika, I went on to experience great love and great loss many times... and then ... she appeared to me again. During college we used to collect rocks and give them to each other—and heart shaped ones were the greatest find. When we first started talking again I wasn't sure where it would lead but we were being flirtatious. I was designing an art exhibition for a client at that time and during the installation I saw a heart shape in the concrete floor—I took the photo and texted it to her with no message. Just a simple heart to communicate what I was starting to feel again.

And so it began...

Heart photos started flying back-and-forth through text messages. The more photos I took the more I started seeing hearts everywhere. And when we started to combine our lives a simple text of a heart photo to Erika would remind her that even when things are hard, and we struggle, I still loved her. Every time I see a heart in the world and stop what I'm doing to take a photo it helps me slow down and remember what is most important.

MORE INFORMATION

A note about the photos

Some of you may be wondering whether we retouched some of these photos to make the hearts. Some seem too perfect, don't they? That's the beauty—when you start doing this you start seeing hearts everywhere and some of them are pretty amazing. To date we've taken over 1,000 of these heart photos and there's bound to be some pretty perfect hearts in that many photos. So, while we did some color correction, cropping, and even a little sharpening on some to make the photos look the best possible, we can honestly say that we never did any photo-retouching (or "Photoshopping") to alter the heart shapes in any way. We also made a pledge to each other — and to you — that we do not purposely make hearts, stage them, or alter the hearts before we take the photos. The photos are exactly as we found them. Start looking, and see for yourself. Once you start, it's easy to find them.

International Shipping

We are happy to offer this special gift to everyone in the world. Unfortunately, anyone outside the USA will not get their cards by Valentine’s Day. The cards are a great gift for any occasion though and international customers can expect delivery by the end of February. Because of the high costs of international shipping we have to charge our international customers to cover the costs. We appreciate your understanding.

In some countries, customs duties may be applied to print shipments. If this is the case then you will be charged for these additional fees. We have no way of knowing if these charges will be incurred or how much they might be.

International supporters who receive tracking numbers should track their packages very closely. Shipments may get stalled in customs and you will have no way of knowing this unless you keep tracking your package. You need to contact the shipping agency to resolve any hold ups. If you don't catch it in time the shipment may get shipped back to us.

Schedule

Printing will begin once the funding goal is met in order to get things moving well before the Kickstarter ends. Help us start production early by pledging early.

Jan. 28, 3:00 PM CST — Kickstarter ends

Jan. 28, 3:30 PM CST — Questionnaires get sent

Jan. 29, 3:30 PM CST — Questionnaire must be answered if you want to receive your prints by Valentine’s Day (USA deliveries only)

Feb. 5 & 6 — All orders get shipped out via USPS Priority Mail with tracking (1–3 day delivery within the USA, 6–10 days international). The closer to Minneapolis you live the sooner you will receive your package. We will ship the furthest packages on the first day in order to give them a head start.

Eco-Friendly Shipping

Where we can, we are using recycled materials in all our shipping supplies. All the paper packaging materials are made from recycled materials and we encourage you to recycle them. We looked into eco-friendly plastic sleeves for the art print but we couldn't find any that were archival. You can be assured that your print is safe to store in the archival sleeve until you are ready to frame it. Please reuse the sleeve after you are done storing your print. We are currently looking into carbon free shipping to offset the environmental impact of shipping the rewards to all our supporters.

Copyright

We've put large images of the photos here without protective watermarks because we wanted to let you experience the full impact of them without the distraction of ugly watermarks. Please don't use these images without permission.
