Women of Banglatown is an all women’s community space offering free programming for neighborhood girls and income generating activities for immigrant women. Our programming includes art workshops and wellness classes. Our mission at Women of Banglatown is to empower girls and women through diverse programming while creating a comfortable space for community conversation.
The organization was founded in 2014 by Ali Lapetina, a photographer and educator who lives in Detroit, Michigan. While photographing the Bengali community, she noticed men and boys socializing within the neighborhood, but didn’t see many girls and women gathering outside of their homes and schools. This inspired her to create a space that provided girls and women a place to call their own.
Risks and challenges
Our biggest challenge is transportation. We offer free transportation to and from Women of Banglatown for girls and women. Depending on how much money is raised, we hope to put a portion of funds towards transportation costs.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
