The Guards of Atlantis is a competitive, team-based board game inspired by computer games of the MOBA genre (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena).
Players are divided into two even teams. Each player controls a single hero using a hand of five cards, which are replaced and upgraded as the game progresses.
Each team’s goal is to help their minions (non-hero units, which are not directly controlled by the players) to reach the enemy’s base (called a “Throne”) and destroy it.

One thing we’d like to mention right from the start is that it doesn’t really matter if you are familiar with the acronym MOBA. Rich tactical choices and extensive strategic planning of your character’s progression will be just as enjoyable to you as it will be to a video game veteran.
The cards act as both your character’s "Action points" and “Health points”. You play cards from your hand to activate your hero and discard cards to defend from attacks. And you only get to replenish your hand at the end of the round, which means that there’s an element of Press Your Luck in there.
Your success in battle relies heavily on your decisions. Do you use that card to attack? Do you keep it in your hand, so that you could defend better? Or would you rather use it for movement? You have to compromise.
At the same time, you have to think about your opponent’s choices. You have to plan ahead. You have to predict. There’s a small portion of luck here, thanks to the simultaneous card selection.
The game uses Area and Hex-Grid movement, which allows heroes to join battle quickly without sacrificing the tactical depth of hex-based wargames. Hexes are used for close-quarter combat while Area Movement allow players to freely reposition their heroes when there are no enemies nearby.
The mechanics are streamlined as much as possible without limiting tactical options. There are very few actual rules to remember – the diversity comes from the card text. This is why both hard-core and casual gamers enjoy the Guards of Atlantis.

The basic set of Guards of Atlantis has six distinct hero characters for players to control. Each Hero has his or her own unique playstyle, strengths and weaknesses. Below is a brief overview:
*Renders displayed are not final, and will be updated as soon as we receive master sculpts from LUDOFACT.
The basic set of Guards of Atlantis includes six hero models. However, each hero is not limited to a single battlefield role. Three of the five starting hero cards can be upgraded when the hero gains a level. Above you can see all the hero cards of Dodger, the Aspiring Witch. Each of the three highlighted ability slots splits into two distinct branches each with a unique set of mechanics, resulting in 64 different combinations for just one character! The optimal path to develop your character is different each game and depends on the constantly changing board situation and your opponent's choices.
Displayed above are the two attack cards. The Finger of Death allows you to blast your enemies while staying out of harm's way. The added passive Initiative bonus will further assist you in this tactics. The alternative - The Burning Skull can only hit adjacent targets which will put you closer to danger, however, the ability to defeat multiple enemy minions with a single attack can quickly tip the balance in your favor. Picking the Burning Skull will also increase your Defense value, which will help you to survive enemy attacks (Check the Level-up section of the rulebook for more information on character progression.).
Below are additional examples of hero powers:
There are three types of Minions in Guards of Atlantis: Melee Minions provide defense bonus to adjacent friendlies and defense penalty to adjacent enemies. Ranged Minion reduces the defense of all enemies in the same area, but provides no bonus to its allies. The “Fat” minion can’t be harmed in any way until it’s the last minion of that faction remaining on the board. However, if you manage to land that last hit, you will score twice as many coins.

Risks and challenges
We understand that there’s always a risk of delays in production and logistics. This is why we’ve decided to produce our game at the industry veteran LUDOFACT, well known for their German quality and punctuality.
The core game is near ready for production. We are currently busy with finishing up the card artwork (we have more than a hundred hero cards in total). It’s almost ready at this point and the work in this direction continues in parallel with the campaign. We will show you more of the artwork in the coming weeks.
We want to make sure that everything added through stretch goals fits the game perfectly in the sense of aesthetics and gameplay.
Production is not an easy task. But we’ve done our homework and we will keep doing everything in our power, to keep this project on track and on schedule.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
