Fire — The original TV, the conversation starter, warmth on frigid nights, and where the tastiest meals are cooked. The place where we get together to bring out our inner kid. Where we laugh and sing, and where deep bonds are forged. Yet, campfires leave behind a footprint that can be hard to remove.
With this in mind, Fire Safe was born.
Fire Safe fosters communal campfire and cooking experiences with friends and family while minimizing the environmental footprint that campfires often leave behind. We sweated over the details to ensure we could make the best portable fire pit for all your adventures, from the backyard to the backcountry.
Our patent-pending hinged collapsible design allows for a large fuel capacity and mighty fire while maintaining a packdown size slimmer than 1” and weighing less than 2.2lbs. This enables you to go on any kind of adventure (big or small) while minimizing the space it takes up in your bag.
We constructed Fire Safe entirely from 304 Stainless Steel. This material was selected precisely for its durability, corrosion resistance and long life while promoting a beautiful patina that develops over time, just like with our Grill M1 Edition.
Fire Safe was designed and engineered specifically to maximize efficiencies while minimizing its consumption.
- Airflow direction has been carefully engineered to create an efficient and clean burn of charcoal or wood in strong-to-light wind conditions
- Wind shielding provided by the frame ensures you light and keep your fires hassle-free
- It's segmented, corrugated design allows you to add charcoal to only the areas that you wish to heat, allowing you to use just enough fuel to cook your meal, rather than wasting monumental amounts of charcoal
- Our insert was designed to require less so you can do more. In fact, Fire Safe requires 26% less fuel per unit of surface area than its closest "competitor"
- After use, the same component that allowed for efficient airflow acts as a scoop for the ashes creating the first disposal-conscious fire containment base. We specifically designed this with a minimal trace mentality.
Every design decision we make is deliberate and thoughtful. That’s why we ensured Fire Safe could work beautifully with its partner-in-crime, our Grill M1 Edition. These two harmonize together to create an optimal cooking and heating environment.
Fire Safe’s segmented fuel containment and our predetermined Grill M1 Edition heights enables your fuel to be used in a highly efficient way for cooking. Furthermore, it allows for better control of heat zones for different foods.
Fire Safe’s design ensures a quick and easy pack-down while our included compact case seals it away for convenient transportation. This function also allows your Fire Safe to stow away cleanly, ensuring your other gear doesn’t become dirty.
Fire Safe is stored in a case that follows the same design principles. The case features modular pockets for accessories, like our Fire Set or Grill Surface, as well as storage for kindling.
Fire Safe’s material finishes have been detailed to be nonporous, making them easy to clean without additional harmful coatings. This uncoated single material assembly ensures that full recycling is as easy as possible, requiring no disassembly.
The case is constructed from a heavy weight, tough weave, recycled polyester (PET/RPET), backed with a PET inner layer, ensuring yet again the fewest material types are used for both sustainability and a uniform design language.
Our design approach was born through hearing your needs and was incorporated at every stage of the process.
We considered and tested a multitude of factors, environments and variables. We spent hours in our studio and in the field (literally) to shape a sustainable, visually clean, and finely detailed outcome.
And finally, after all this time, we’ll have a chance to clean up and wash our endless supply of dirty tea and coffee mugs that littered our studio.
Wolf and Grizzly didn’t start with a product, or even with a product idea. It started with a frustration of mine that wasn’t specific to one object: everything I owned could be grouped into two categories: products that looked great, but were weak— belonging in “the city”—and gear that was functional, clunky and difficult to use, fit for the outdoors.
Those outdoor goods were stowed away in my basement, reserved for trips and meticulously planned adventures. Since they couldn’t be used on a day-to-day basis, what would be the point in keeping them anywhere else?
But I was convinced that this dichotomy was senseless. And I held a firm belief that if outdoor tools could be usable, durable and well-designed, they would help us to adventure on a whim— without all the planning, searching and packing. These tools would enable people to experience and live an outdoor lifestyle all year round, from backyard to backcountry.
Inspired by this, I left my career as an engineer to found Wolf and Grizzly. It became my outlet to create a set of goods that were built to cater to the needs of adventurers in every context.
With the initial care and support of an incredible set of family and friends, as well as colleagues who grew to friends, Wolf and Grizzly launched the Grill M1 on Kickstarter in 2017. At over 220% funded, the product was met with exceptional reception from many media outlets. More importantly though, we received hundreds of customer messages expressing their deep appreciation of the product and the level of care that’s evidenced by every interaction we carry out.
From there, friends and family manned tradeshow booths, enabling us to act like grownups while still being toddlers. Shortly after, WG moved from the spare bedroom to two desks at a local accelerator. Now, we're a team huddled around a group of desks in an old tannery and working over Zoom in remote offices. Tiny as we may be, we remain a force together that we believe can change the world.
You, on Kickstarter, enabled this journey and so we're back again. Not just to raise funds for a product, but to work with you to continue to build this vision.
Roy Chapman Andrews once wrote, "always there has been an adventure just around the corner— and the world is still full of corners." Wolf and Grizzly exists to enable this adventure from backyard to backcountry. We hope you'll join us.
Risks and challenges
This is our second Kickstarter and we learned many lessons from our previous project.
While each project comes with its own unique set of challenges, we’re extremely confident in our ability to deliver the Fire Safe and other rewards to our backers.
That being said and because we believe in transparency, here are the risks worth noting:
Product Specific Risks: As we type this, the design of Fire Safe has been near finalized and is in the latest pre-production stages. We're currently in the "perfecting" stage as there is no detail too small to ignore. Fire Safe's case design and material composition is also being finalized. Given the experience level of our team and partners, as well as our progress, risk is incredibly low. While we are very confident in meeting our deadlines and are diligently working towards them, we wanted to make sure it was mentioned.
Manufacturing Operations Risk: Stuff happens and sometimes it can’t be controlled (we’ve all been there). A factory’s machine may break down temporarily and cause us delays. A supplier may miscalculate how much material is needed and is forced to send us more while we wait. Regardless of what happens, we promise to keep you updated.
Shipping and Logistics Risk: Full disclosure, shipping and warehousing can be a nightmare if done poorly. Luckily, we have some logistical wizards on staff (pun intended) to handle this with the grace and elegance of Gandalf the White. That being said, even wizards sometimes can’t alter the weather, port congestion and other factors.
Acts of God: We’re located near Toronto, Canada so thankfully most extreme weather (especially in the summer) is non existent. However that doesn’t make us, our beloved partners or suppliers, immune. Earthquakes and storms can occur but we’re human and will first prioritize the health and safety of others above all else.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
