What is Wizardz Bluff?
Wizardz Bluff is a competitive 2 to 4 player trick-taking card game with modern twists and wizardly tricks. Throughout the game, players take on the role of shape-shifting wizards battling in an epic magic duel to outwit and outsmart the competition and gain the famed title as Grand Master Wizard of Zoor. Players start with identical hands of 12 playing cards, 11 animal transformation from the lowly plague-carrying rat to the mighty dragon, and the aid of one Alchemist card. Secretly choose your animal-form each match that will best be able to collect and keep the Elemental Spellstones. Correctly predict what your opponents will play and be rewarded with powerful spells to support your strategy and strengthen the score of your Spellstones. The one with the most valuable collection of Spellstones after 12 matches is the winner.
We designed Wizardz Bluff with these goals in mind:
- A balance between strategy and surprise to make every game fun and interesting.
- Players should have multiple ways to score.
- All the wizards begin with an equal footing and must rely on wits, rather than luck.
Wizardz Bluff is very unique as a card game. While it has a feel like a classic-style card game (making it easy to learn) with betting mechanics similar to Poker, trick-taking mechanics like Spades or Hearts, it is very different. One special mechanic is the ability to win powerful Spellcards. These cards have special one-time use abilities to twist with your strategy. Furthermore, once played you collect them as sets, that provide multipliers to your endgame scoring.
You are rewarded Spellcards for being able to correctly divine your opponents' animal form they are choosing. This means that even when you play low cards, you can still work towards winning. You can also earn them by betting on yourself and your own animal form. This is where the clever family friendly bluffing comes into play. Unlike standard card games, you play your cards FACEDOWN! Nobody really knows what each other will transform into until the cards are revealed simultaneously. Yet, there is still enough information to predict what your opponents are playing.
We have also enlisted the talent of Trav Hanson, Eisner-nominated artist and illustrator for our character design and extra art.
Wizarding Lesson 5.0: TRANSFORMATION MAGIC
Each turn players choose the animal form they will transform into, laying it facedown. You are limited to the same 11 as your opponents, and they can only be cast once...so choose wisely, Wizard.
Once your card is chosen it is laid secretly facedown. You then will add your personal wager of Spellstones (up to 3) to your transformation spell. These wages are predictions of what animal you believe will win this match:
- Red stones bet on DRAGON,
- Green stones bet on UNICORN,
- White stones bet on GRIFFIN,
- Blue stones bet on RAT, and
- Gold stones bet on ALL OTHER ANIMALS (3-9).
If your bet is correct, you will earn ONE Spellcard for every stone that matches the winning animal.
In addition, the winning player of each match collects all the Spellstones played that match. Every Spellstone is worth one point at the beginning of the game. But as every individual wizard practices more and more magic of a particular Element, that wizard's Spellstones begin to increase in value. Three Rules to Wizardz Bluff:
- COLLECT the Spellstones
- KEEP the Spellstones
- INCREASE their value
But beware, your dragon, unicorn and griffin forms may be powerful to win most hands, your opponents each possess their pesky Plague Rat, whose mystic plague is ONLY triggered if in the presence of a...you named it...DRAGON, UNICORN or GRIFFIN. This means that the lowest ranke animal form will beat the highest ranked forms.
When you play your Spellcards they are laid down in front of your wizard to grow your Library. A collection of three Spellcards in your Library are turned in to increase your Wizard's mage level of that color.
When any Wizard is out of Transformation cards or Spellstones, the game is over. Everyone scores up their spellstones, multiplying them by their respective Mage Levels attained during the game. Highest scoring wizard is named Grand Master Wizard...the winner!

Risks and challenges
While Gold Cauldron Games is new on the scene, we have been quietly in the background supporting over 100 Kickstarter campaigns watching and learning the industry standards. Like you, we are fans of board games! We appreciate high-quality in games. We have followed mentors like Eduardo Baraf of Pencil First Games and Tim & Ben Eisner of Skybound, who are known for putting out high-quality games. We aim to emulate these mentors. We have also freelanced Eisner-nominated artist and illustrator, Trav Hanson of BeanLeafPress creator of Life of the Party: Realities of an RPGer daily comic for our character design and art.
We are aware that timelines and budgets could affect the final product. Given the new possible tariffs with China, this may increase our risk, and poses a challenge. We are committed to overcoming those challenges. We have a manufacturer already lined up. The game is finished and simply needs funding. Nevertheless, despite all of this preparation we must all understand that the natural world and the business world, along with the political world can produce unforeseen problems and challenges that were unaware to the creators at the time of the launch of this campaign. Yet, we are confident that we will always find the best solution that is right for the game, the backers and the reputation of Gold Cauldron Games.
The bulk of the funds from this campaign will go to producing and manufacturing this game. Estimates of production costs will be around 20 to 30%, this includes design and consultation needs to get the game up to production ready. Manufacturing will come out to be around 20% of our budget. Shipping will be assessed after the campaign, nevertheless, a good portion of the funds from this campaign will go into shipping from the factory to the warehouses and through customs, along with the aforementioned tariffs. 10% will be used to reimburse art assets and acquiring the final pieces used on the Spellcards. Around 10% will be used to reimburse and expand the marketing costs. This leaves about 10 to 20% to reinvest in Gold Cauldron Games for future projects.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
