About

THE HISTORY

In 1884 the schoolteacher Edwin Abbott wrote a slender volume under the pen name "A Square." This book detailed the culture and customs of the residents of a two-dimensional world called Flatland - and in the process it popularized concepts of higher geometry to a Victorian public.

THE GAME

With this project we have adapted Abbott's universe into a game of strategy and chance. Players put together their hand of geometric character shapes - custom etched into a set of twelve dice. They select a piece to play against their opponent. The winner of each round takes both pieces, and the first to lose all of his pieces loses. Easy! However, behind this simple set of rules is a complex game of skill and probability.

THE RULES

Two, three, or four players can play Flatland with a single game set consisting of twelve pieces. Additional sets expand gameplay and increase the challenge exponentially. In Flatland each piece represents a shape (i.e. CUBE, CIRCLE, LINE, etc.). Every face represents one aspect of that shape - for instance a TRIANGLE PIECE will show a triangle on the top and bottom face and three points on three other faces. The aspect of the shape that lands FACE UP determines the winner of each roll.

1. To start the players take turns randomly drawing their pieces from the pouch to assemble their hands.

2. Each player selects a piece from his or her hand to play.

3. The players roll their selected pieces. The strength of each piece’s geometry determines the winner.

4. The winner of each round takes all of the rolled pieces.

5. Players continue selecting and rolling their pieces until only one player has all of the remaining pieces to complete a round.

6. The first player to win three rounds wins the game.

a. If the same figure comes up on the players’ roll, the players exchange those pieces (i.e. If PLAYER A rolls a SQUARE that shows its LINE-SEGMENT face up against PLAYER B's CIRCLE showing LINE-SEGMENT up, then PLAYER A takes the CIRCLE and PLAYER B takes the SQUARE).

b. Rolling a VOID or TESSERACT will take any other piece, and then go immediately out of play (these two pieces can only be played once per round).

c. If a VOID is rolled against a TESSERACT, both pieces go out of play.

THE PLAYERS

Flatland is a game with broad appeal. Somewhere on its family tree we may find dominoes and the more strategic card games. What sets Flatland apart, in addition to its unique history and design, is the scalability of play. It can accommodate a wide range of skill levels while remaining engaging to everyone.

Flatland is also perfect for a variety of educational settings. It can be used in math classrooms as a hands-on aid in instructing Euclidean geometry. It lends itself to the study of probability and statistics. Not least of all it is based on a classic piece of Victorian literature. Abbott's wry satire of the social strata of his day are built into the strengths and weaknesses of each geometric character in the game.

THE GOODS

The complete Flatland game includes a set of twelve dice laser-etched with original two, three, and four dimensional designs. It also includes a bespoke carrying pouch for storage and piece selection. And an illustrated booklet detailing the rules of the game, its history, and providing a deeper look at the geometry behind the pieces.

Risks and challenges

Coordinating multiple printers, plastics, and textile manufacturers to ensure the high quality product we intend carries with it certain complexities. The project as a whole depends on holding each discipline to a common schedule. We will make every effort to keep our various teams on the same project plan, and we will keep you informed of our progress along the way.
