Pocket Companion: A Guide to Cities and Towns
When last we left you, our adventurers, you were nestled in a cosy tavern, enjoying a welcome rest after a long and unforgiving battle.
Fast forward to present day, and due to incredibly high demand off the back of our last two wildly successful campaigns, we at Wisdom Save Media are proud to announce the second of its name - The Pocket Companion: A Guide to Cities and Towns!
After the roaring success of its predecessor, Pocket Companion: A Tavern Guide, we wanted to create a second book that contained all the useful tips, story hooks, and world-building tools that you’re used to from us, but with a slightly different focus. This next book is a guide to Cities and Towns, a system-neutral resource for busy, built-up settlements in a fantasy setting. You asked, we heard - and now, we deliver.
We are creating a beautifully designed softcover guide spanning over 100 pages, positively overflowing with content covering a dozen Towns and Cities. Fully fleshed out with non-playable characters (NPC's), quest ideas, shops, taverns, temples, and other places of interest designed to slot seamlessly into your table-top-title of choice.
This book is the perfect resource or gift for any DM or GM of any level, aiming to help build or develop their worlds.
Each City and Town has been built with unique features meaning that no two places are alike, giving DM's and GM's lots of ideas to help inspire endless adventures and form many parties.
Thank you for checking out our campaign, we can’t wait to see you on our adventures! Read on below to find out more...
Our main goal is to produce fun and unique guides that will help you during your games that won't break the bank or your back in the process!
For this campaign, we aim to raise enough funds to publish and produce our second Pocket Companion book. Since the first book, we have managed to refine and improve our publishing process so the funding goal is much smaller this time around.
Like our first Pocket Companion, the final product will be a 5x8 softcover guide that can easily travel with you to wherever you play your games. The contents of the book have been arranged for DM's and GM's to easily pick a random city or town during a game, allowing them to continue on without disrupting the flow.
Like all of our other campaigns, we really want the tabletop community to be as involved as possible. You are the lifeblood of why we do this, and your ideas are incredible. In this campaign, we want to encourage you to submit as many ideas as you would like in the comments of the main campaign.
The main things we would like to see are:
- NPC names
- Store names or points of interest
- City/Town names
That being said, the sky’s the limit here. And whatever you want to contribute, no matter how whacky, obscure (or frankly hilarious) we encourage you to please go right ahead. Feel free to go crazy. We aim to include as many of these ideas in either the finished Pocket Companion or other creations along the way. The more contributions we have the more we can unlock throughout the campaign!
No matter how much you prepare, or how experienced you are, those pesky players will always find a way to surprise you. How many of you have prepared picture perfect campaigns on paper only to see your plans dashed for your wayward players? This guide, along with our first Pocket Companion is designed to be used in a pinch. If your adventurers decide to veer off path (although, I'm pretty sure we could exchange if for when!), Save yourself the headache of trying to create an entire town in under 30 seconds, simply choose a random section and away you go.
What's in the guide?
Throughout the book, you will find a number of plot hook ideas but you will also find a whole section devoted to a few different settlement centred story starters!
Points of Interest:
Each settlement comes with a list of places or focal points that the city or town is best known for. Tourist attractions, places of historical significance etcetera.
In a Nutshell:
This section provides the DM/GM with a bite-sized piece of flavour text designed to give the person behind the screen and the players an insight into the overall feel of the place.
Each settlement comes with a description of its surroundings and geographical location. This section, while providing plenty of detail, still allows the DM or GM to place the City or Town wherever they want in their worlds.
People of the Settlement:
This section describes the sort of people that live within the walls of the city or town. Maybe they're suspicious of outsiders? Maybe they honour strict traditions that must be obeyed? The choices are varied and plentiful.
Trading and Taverns:
Each city or town needs a source of income and relaxation. This section describes the sorts of commerce and trade the settlement specialises in. Is it a mining town? or a city with a busy shipping district? And how do the people of the town relax after a hard days work?
In this section, you will find an easy to navigate table of popular places that your adventurers might seek out. Smithy's, Inn's, Temple's, Archives, it's all there.
Locations, Shops, and Sights:
This section provides a more detailed look at some of the popular places to visit and the important parts of the settlement that your adventure might take you.
You can't run a city without people (most of the time), so with this really handy table full of fleshed-out NPC's you can easily populate these settlements with people for your adventurers to interact with. And if your players are anything like ours, it won't matter if they kill them the moment they make contact with them because you haven't spent hours lovingly creating them.
As with our first Pocket Companion, we have included a section for you to add your own cities and towns.
And more sections to come...with your help:
We want to add some additional roll tables and tools to the guide as the campaign progresses. Just like our first Pocket Campanion, we want you to contribute ideas and things you would like to see added to the guide. We will then be adding these if our funding progresses beyond our initial goal. The more you help us raise and the more our backers contribute, the bigger and better the guide becomes.
Last year we took the Pocket Companion to Dragonmmeet in London, UK and we were overwhelmed by the response we received. It was our first official product and our first time exhibiting at a convention, it was so much fun for us that we have decided to go back!
We met with tons of creators and gamers and we could not believe how friendly and welcoming the convention goers and organisers were. So this year we are offering a special pledge level available to those who are planning to attend Dragonmeet at the end of November. Backers that pledge at the Dragonmeet Pick Up level will be able to collect their rewards direct from us at our stand by the bar!
This time we are far more experienced and confident with postage and packaging. As a result, you will be prompted to add a postage fee to any pledge levels that include physical rewards. We thought last time organising shipping fees after the campaign would make things easier but unfortunately, it didn't. This time, after you have entered your pledge you won't have to do anything apart from wait for your goodies to arrive.
We aim to send out rewards by the end of November/beginning of December and most of our backers of the previous book received their rewards within 7 days of postage. Some areas of the world, however, received them a little slower which is why we have set the delivery estimate as, January 2020.
Rewards will be shipped in a large letter sized box (16.5cm x 23.5cm x 2cm) and weight should not exceed 500g, the shipping fees added to the pledges have been calculated to reflect the current postage costs.
Risks and challenges
As with our previous book, our main challenge will be securing the funding, but we're confident this can be achieved. To avoid any delays, we have completed the main copy for the book, and have already commissioned the images, so this will not hold up the delivery process. With the last book, we delivered ahead of schedule, and plan to do the same with this campaign. Any additional PDF content that needs to be produced will be completed before the end of the campaign, once again, to avoid any delays.
With the previous book, one main challenge was arranging shipping after the Kickstarter was complete. We found that this was confusing for everyone involved, so have streamlined the process, by confirming the shipping fees beforehand. This means that once you have supported the Kickstarter, you just need to sit back and wait for your rewards to arrive!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
