Yogventures! is an open world sandbox adventure game featuring characters developed by Simon and Lewis of The Yogscast!
What will Yogventures be like?
Yogventures is going to be an open world sandbox game designed first and foremost as a multiplayer experience. The game will allow you to create and shape worlds, then easily share them and play with friends! We're going to take the idea of "build your own adventure" to the extreme. Yogventures will provide simple-to-use tools to design worlds that match your imagination and are packed with thrilling stories and epic treasures.
You'll have control over everything from buildings and dungeons to the NPCs and mobs. Yogventures will be the ultimate modder's game where even the rules of winning and losing can be tweaked. Think adventure maps in Minecraft, only now you aren’t limited to just blocks! The game utilizes technology called "Marching Cubes" which allows us to generate fantastic new world terrain that is random and editable. This means the terrain will be vast, interesting and fully destructible - you'll be able to diggy diggy as much as you like or just say 'Balls to it!' and blow it all up!
But that's not all - there will be other gameplay modes to play alone or together, and we will be kicking off your imagination by making brand new adventures for you to play! These will feature all your favorite characters from our series, the heroic Honeydew and Xephos, the bumbling wizard Fumblemore, the raucous Professor Griswold, the Knight formerly known as Old Peculier, and many more! And of course this means we'll be launching an even more epic and amazing video series to run alongside the release of Yogventures - potentially even featuring maps that you have made. All of the maps and adventures we make for this will be released to the community so you can play along with us or re-imagine the adventure and make it your own!
The game you’ve always wanted
Importantly, we want YOU to be involved at every stage in the development of the game - from funding it here on Kickstarter to guiding the developers on where to focus their efforts. We have a forum set up for players to submit ideas and feedback and we’ll work with you to make those ideas a reality. We’re going to run monthly polls asking for the community to decide what features, elements, or community mods are added to the game. Just some of the features which will be included are:
- Beautiful, randomly-generated game worlds that are different every time you start a new Yogventure
- Fully shapeable terrain - with the ability for players to raise a mountain range or create a vast ocean; you can effortlessly shape your world however you imagine it
- A wealth of novel building materials, creatures, NPCs and items
- A rich underground to mine and explore - bristling with rare outcroppings of gems and crystals, hidden tombs and dark underground terrors that drop rare weapons and loot
- A fully-fleshed out crafting system
- An in-game physics engine that will even effect the blocks you place in your creations
- The ability to customise your own unique avatar or play as one of your favourite Yogscast characters
- Easy-to-use in-game modding API including in-game scripting
- Ability for modders to have a chance to get their work added to the game
- Regularly released video updates from the developers including the latest feature additions
Why are the Yogscast making a game?
We feel incredibly lucky to have been given the opportunity to entertain you as we play games made by other people. For the past four years we've shared experiences together in World of Warcraft, a wealth of betas and new releases, and of course our most popular Minecraft series Shadow of Israphel. The characters of Honeydew and Xephos and all the others have sprung to life out of these amazing journeys and we think it's time to give them a game all their own.
Countless times we've felt limited by games and come across features we have wished we could change. "Come On Blizz!" Simon would yell (no matter who developed the game!) and we hoped that someone would hear our call and implement this feature, or that bug fix, in order to make perfect something that was already great. With this game we'll have that opportunity. Since we'll be helping to develop the game we'll be able to ask YOU the players what features you want and actually have them created; this game will be the ultimate mod where anything we can dream we can build!
The Dream Team
Lewis and Simon can barely manage a simple jumping puzzle - so the Yogscast aren’t going to be doing any actual coding! We aren't programmers or artists but luckily we have close friends at Winterkewl Games who are. They are a team of talented indie developers based in and around Hollywood, California. Their artists and programmers are long-time veterans of film and game companies - working at the highest levels of production.
We started concept work and pre-production during our trip to Los Angeles in October 2011, which might help to explain how we ended up visiting Dreamworks in this video:
This will be Winterkewl Games’s first title but after seeing what they have been able to put together for our demo we are sure these are the right guys for the job! In only a few months of part-time development, the game is already looking fantastic.
Winterkewl’s artists, modelers, animators and programmers are partnering with us on this project to create the game our community wants. Whatever we together can imagine they will endeavour to make real. In the game at least! All of the art on this page as well as everything you can see on Yogventures official website - http://www.yognaughts.com - was created by this highly skilled team of artists and programmers!
Thank you for helping to make this a reality!
We're truly honored to have the opportunity to bring the Yogscast to life in a game of our own making, and we relish the chance to be able to give back to our fans and community whom we love. We'll do everything we can to make the kind of game that will make YOU proud and look forward to sharing the fun in the future!
Also, a great big thank you to the families and friends of Winterkewl Games who have been so supportive during all this pre-production. We couldn't have gotten this far without your love and support, and we'll need you even more during production. THANKS!
The first thing we will do is hire Michael Winslow from the Police Academy series of movies and get him to do the sound effects like in this game: http://www.youtube.com/watch…
More seriously - any additional support we receive will go straight back into the game to make it the best it can be. Additional funding will allow us to apply more polish, more art, more animations, hire additional programmers and develop a richer and more fully fleshed out experience.
Not at all - our Minecraft videos, mod development and production values are going to get bigger and better over the coming months. We cannot wait to play through the new chapters in the Shadow of Israphel adventure which is being produced by our talented group of friends and map-makers. We are also planning to release adventure maps to accompany the series for everyone to play. In addition we are continuing to spearhead continued refinement and development of the free YogBox and Technic Pack projects at http://www.technicpack.net/ which make Minecraft a deeper and more rewarding game. Our latest launcher makes installing these mods easier and quicker than ever.
The current demo build works out of the box for Macs as well as PC. So we promise to ensure a Mac release is speedily working and available alongside the PC release.
It’s not immediately compatible with Linux, but If there is enough demand we will release a browser-based solution.
We do not at this time, have any plans to port over to any of the consoles or handheld devices.
Yogventures! will be completely open for players to publish gameplay footage. We will also be asking players to send us links to their videos so we can feature the best ones and share them with the wider community!
Sorry, the wording must be confusing because we've gotten asked this a lot! You get the FULL game for backing us at the $15 level. This is like a pre-order thank you for being a supporter! You will NEVER have to pay anything else, including all future updates / patches / dlc etc. Sorry for the confusion!
There will of course be some similarities, but this game will be focused much more on the build, play, share your own adventure with friends! It's very difficult these days, with so many great games having already been made to be 100% completely original.
Even Skyrim has crafting, so it's very difficult to make a open world sandbox game that allows players to design their own adventures and share them with friends without there being some eventual overlap in systems to other games from the past, including minecraft.
However, the features and options and the main emphasis on the building and sharing of adventures is going to be a relatively novel approach that not many games have done!
We want to make it as easy as possible to customize your characters! We don't know exactly what it'll look like yet, but we are definitely planning something more than just skinning.
This was a huge oversight on our part for not putting information about that in each of the reward categories, but yes depending on the reward the international shipping will increase the cost it'll take to get it to you. What we're going to do is ask people that are outside of the US or the UK to please add $5.00 usd to their pledge and we'll cover the difference. Thanks.
The schedule for the releases right now are:
(October) 10/12/2012 -- pre-alpha
(November) 11/12/2012 -- alpha
(December) 12/12/2012 -- beta
????????? -- v1.0 sometime 2013 ;)
These dates are all estimated and may be subject to change. The game will remain in open beta for a long time after January 2013, basically until "it's done".
The delivery date for the rewards will depend on how many we need to have made and how quickly they can be manufactured and shipped. So we don't have an eta on those at the moment.
We've been asked this question quite a bit, and instead of just giving you guys my patented "too early to tell" answer I thought I'd give you my thoughts on the matter. We want to support all kinds of game modes in the future, and Survival definitely makes sense. But in a sense, an adventure map, when not playing on editor or easy difficulty, will be a kind of survival mode by default. You'll need resources and food and health and there'll be baddies that want to eat / kill/ rob you etc. It's just that rather than ALL of that being completely random, some Yognau(gh)t or us here at Winterkewl games will have layered on top a fun adventure for you to experience as well. That way, It'll be your choice whether you follow their rules or simply settle in with the locals. :)
You can get the full game here during the Kickstarter for as little as $15 when you pledge your support. After the Kickstarter, assuming we met our goals, the game will retail for $30.00.
The question of what computer specs will be required to run the game? It's still too early to nail that down. We are going to do our best to get it to run well on even modest computers. We'll also add as many performance options as possible to help players tune the game by turning off / on features as necessary for speed.
Not at this time PayPal has very strict rules regarding pre-ordering goods using their service. When the game is ready to actually be delivered to players we can start using PayPal once again.
In the mean time, Amazon will continue to be the storefront we use. Please go to http://www.winterkewl.com/games/yogscast/ to pre-order Yogventures!
The developer forums are now open over at http://www.yogscast.com. If you pledged enough to get access to the developer's forum please head over there and register for an account. Once that is complete please send an email to email@example.com Tell her your name, the email address you used to back the kickstarter, how much you pledged and the username you chose for yourself over at http://www.yogscast.com. She will then verify your information and sort our your permissions to the forums. Please allow up to 2 weeks for this process as she gets many many requests and has to hand verify each one.
The game will be a digital download. We won't be able to say which service it might be available on until after the game is complete. I.e. we can't promise it will be on Steam. However we have submitted Yogventures! to Valve's Greenlight program to be considered.
Right now, all we can say is that the game will be a digital download and backers of the kickstarter will receive and email instructions on how / where / and when it's ready.
This is true of all reward tiers, except of course for backers of $300 or more. Backers of $300+ will receive a dvd as part of that reward tier.
