We've reached our first goal of $5,000 for the translation of Hi! My Name is Loco and I am a Racist."
BUT WE'RE NOT DONE!!
I'm so grateful to all of you and continue to be amazed by the support flowing in to help me realize this dream of bringing this work to the people of Japan. But now let's take the next step!
NEXT GOAL! —$10K
I've done a poll of backers and supporters and the poll resulted in a tie. Two ideas rose to the top. The first was the idea of the additional funds being used for a National Reading / Lecture / Workshop Tour around Japan (Maybe 5-10 cities nationwide), coordinated with supporters, backers, and interested parties in those cities. The funds would be used for travel expenses.
I've done many such events since coming to Japan, at universities and townhalls and such. I've even done a few in the US. And they're always well-attended and well-received.
However most of these talks have been relegated to the Tokyo / Yokohama area. So I relish the idea of meeting people nationwide! I'm very excited about this opportunity and, according to the poll, many of you are, as well.
So here's what you can do: just hit the green button that says "Back This Project" at the top-right of this page to get started.
SECOND STRETCH GOAL - $15K
The second goal is the manga-ization of "Loco in Yokohama"
Those of you who've read LIY know these hilarious misadventures and poignant portraits of life in a Japanese Junior high School are perfect for illustration!
Characters like Matsui-kun and Mika-chan, Miss Betty and Loco-Sensei himself, beg to be seen in color! So let's make it happen! (Those of you who haven't read the book(s), here's your chance - just hit the green button that says "Back This Project" at the top-right of this page and you're well on your way!)
The funds will be used to enlist and pay the artist and publish the book. I've already approached several artists of note previously -- for I've been looking to do this for some time-- and though several of these illustrators were interested, the funding was never there.
Let's change that TODAY!
Help me get this campaign to $15K and we'll do just that!
Once again: Thank You for making this campaign a success thus far!
Nikki and I are very grateful for your support! This is gonna be a hecka-project but we're up to the task!
How Will The Funds Be Used?
40% of the money will go towards translation and editing costs. 20% will go to cover art, formatting and book design, 20% will be taken by Kickstarter, Paypal fees, customs fees, and taxes I will need to pay on this book. 10% will cover rewards to supporters, and 10% will cover incidentals / unforeseen expenses (which there generally are, so best be prepared).
As those of you who follow my activity on Twitter and Facebook have already likely surmised from all the pics with famous, infamous and noteworthy people I've taken of late, The Wait is OVER! The NEW book is well underway!
...and the crowd goes wild!
It's called: Winning Abroad
In "Hi! My Name is Loco..." I told my story, straight up, no chaser.
In "Loco in Yokohama" I focused on Japanese people, primarily students, colleagues, and friends I've made since coming here. Basically my love letter to Japan.
But, in "Winning Abroad" (the third and final chapter of my, ahem, Japan trilogy) I direct my attention to the non-Japanese people living here. People of different backgrounds, different perspectives, different nationalities, Blacks, Whites, Asians, Latinos, and biracial people, working in a variety of fields.
The one thing they have in common is the place they call home: Japan.
And, oh yeah, they're WINNING!
Winning Abroad will be the consummate book on how to make it happen in a country outside of your own, for many of the principles and strategies these fascinating people have utilized are indeed universal! No matter where you're headed, you'll learn something in here about how to make it happen out there!
I'm confident this book will deliver the inspiration and / or practical guidance and advice you can use to finally (or continue to) put your talents and energies to productive if not superlative use, and position yourself to WIN ABROAD!
Here in Japan, I can usually be found wearing one or more of the following hats:
Otherwise I'm just a driven, creative and passionate human being with goals and dreams. If you wanna know more just open one of my books. You'll feel like we're kin by the time you've closed it. Ask anyone (-;
Thank you for considering supporting this project!
Risks and challenges
There is minimal risk involved with this project.
Both, the English version of "Hi! My Name is Loco..." and "Loco in Yokohama" are of course COMPLETED WORKS and will be ready to ship (or email if you've ordered an eBook or PDF) as soon as this campaign is funded. Estimated delivery, 1-2 weeks after the fact.
As for the Japanese 日本語で version of "Hi! My Name is Loco..." there is the possibility that the translator will run into aspects of the story that prove to be exceptionally difficult to convey in Japanese. These will likely not be insurmountable obstacles but they may cause a delay in completing the project. Also, as part of the localization process, and as is generally the case with translated works, certain parts of the original material will likely be altered, annotated, abridged or otherwise edited in order to make the story as suitable for Japanese readers as possible without compromising the integrity of the original work. These changes will be done at the discretion of the translator, the eventual Japanese editor, and of course myself. Also, $5000 is an estimate of how much it will cost to complete this project but we will certainly translate as much as we can with the funds available, including any surplus funds this campaign might generate.
Otherwise, there are no foreseeable obstacles to this project moving full steam ahead and being made available by Fall / Winter 2016.
As for "Winning Abroad" there are no predictable obstacles to the book being completed also by Fall / Winter 2016.
I will personally be regularly updating and communicating with backers regardless, providing details on the status of the project and the rewards.
