Target Cracked – Please Help Stretch the Goal!

Thank you for the immense support! I sent out an email blast on Sunday, and received a couple of generous pledges for the higher rewards, plus a very gratifying response from many recipients of my promo email, who pledged for the book and bang, the target was cracked!

It's almost time to celebrate with one of the many bubblies produced in the French Alps regions, but perhaps not quite…

Please help boost the total

The fund now stands at £14,585, a little more than the Jura Wine book achieved. So far, there have been 310 backers, somewhat fewer than the final tally for Jura Wine. If the campaign ended right now, I would receive about £13,000 and about £3,000 would have to be put aside immediately for costs to mail out the books (something I wildly under-estimated last time), leaving £10,000 for production costs (ignoring the fact of putting my time aside to fulfil the pledges for itineraries, leading a tour and delivering a tasting event). So what looks a lot in some ways, soon gets whittled down…

I have paid out money for photographic costs and will be paying out for my experienced editor, designer and cartographer. And then there are the print costs. All this is before my own travel costs as I continue to finalise research, in-between writing.

How about a new target goal of £20,000?

There are 13 days to go on this campaign – it seems feasible to aim for another £5.5k and it would be great to have the commitment for more books. Please can you help spread the word? Or if you are a backer, consider increasing your pledge for a higher-value reward (perhaps 2 books, to give one as a gift)?

A new reward and an ongoing reward

A few days ago I added a new reward mainly for wine and book stores – a box of 12 books at £200 plus shipping (that's a total of £250 to countries out of Europe – just £21 per book).

Ongoing is the early-bird reward for the book at just £20 (about $25/€25) plus shipping (free in the UK/France). I limited this to the first 300 copies and there are 140 left – it's a great offer!

For any questions about the French Alps Wine Regions trips or event rewards, please do get in touch via the Kickstarter messaging system if you are already a backer, or find my contact details on my Wine Travel Media website.

And ongoing research…

Yesterday I was able to share the information about the Kickstarter campaign and show the book cover to various Savoie wine organisation officials and some vignerons at the annual Savoie wine competition. Everyone was enthusiastic and encouraging. And then later I visited a producer, new to me, Domaine Dupraz in Apremont. There I uncovered a fascinating story of three generations, who have made waves in the important village and Savoie AOC cru Apremont. I love finding good stories to tell.

Other important vignerons who will feature in the book are the second cousins Gilles and Adrien Berlioz (below), each with their own domaine in Chignin – spending time with these producers is such a huge privilege.

Your support means a lot to me. This book will provide invaluable information on these French Alpine regions and will help to bring the story of their vignerons to the wider world of wine.

PS: It's very gratifying to receive support from some of my eminent wine-writing colleagues - so far I've received pledges and shout-outs from Jancis Robinson MW, Jon Bonné, Monty Waldin, Alder Yarrow, Luis de Gutierrez and José Vouillamoz among others.
