About

A Big Light Modifier In A Small Backpack!

Having seen the light coming off of an octabank, I'm in love with big light modifiers. It's like instant big beautiful light! What I don't like is how much space such modifiers can consume, even when collapsed!

I've been spending the last few months scribbling down ideas and picking up rods of various types. Slowly designing and tinkering with how I could make an ultra portable DIY light modifier that will produce big soft light.

I'm looking to design and document three main light modifiers:

  • 25" softbox
  • 50" softbox
  • 7-8' octabank

The design goals are:

  • Use off the shelf or easily acquired materials and parts
  • Home improvement or local retail store available tools
  • Keep the price to make one down to a minimum!
  • Document measurements, manufacturing, and assembling the modifiers into an eBook

I've spent a few hundred dollars of my own money buying rods and various connectors to put some basic units together, but given some of the designs and tests were destructive in nature, I'm looking to raise funds through Kickstarter to complete the project with the support of the community.

I realize that there are plenty of double fold umbrella light modifiers out there, which will fit in one's backpack. And that's great. I've got a couple of Westcott's 30" double folds and love them. I'm hoping to be able to create a 25", 50" , and 7-8' softbox/octabanks that will fit in a backpack as well.

And to do that, I'll need your help.

How Will The Money Be Used?

The money will be used to buy more materials to use for creation of prototypes and for creating modifiers for use in drop tests and use test cases with different glues and means of putting the units together. Many of these tests are one-shot and while the rods can be cut down, they would no longer work correctly in the original design.

Some of the money will be used to also buy fabric for creating the covers. I'm not the great at sewing, so I also anticipate some mishappen attempts here. :)

Joints, connectors, hinges, and other means of hooking up rods together under tension will be used. From some of my early designs, many will fail(bend, snap, crack) under the tension applied by flexing and the weight of the coverings.

Adhesives, tools, and at least one light/speed ring bracket. For the 50" softbox and the 7-8' octabank, I'll want to add a way to hook it up with a speedring or other similar adapter so folks with lights bigger than speedlights can use bigger lights. For this, I'll need at least one monoblock light, like an AlienBee. The aim is to ensure that the softbox or octabank will be able to handle the heat coming from one as well as properly mount.

Will You Build Some For Backers?

Originally, when I spec'd out this project, I had intended to make softboxes and octabanks, adding them to the rewards list. However, I realized that that went a bit beyond the DIY spirit and so am sticking to keeping this purely ebook. If there is demand, I will add it as a limited reward for some. Let me know how you feel about this. I can't guarantee I'll be great at making them or that there is alot of quality control. :) But I definitely intend to build them as best as I can!

How Soon Till Completion?

After successful backing, I'll buy more raw materials and continue work, posting designs and progress. As I've been told by others I've asked before, it'll be done when its done. The three light modifiers will be designed and built in the order of design comlexity/size. So I'll start with the 25" softbox before moving onto the 50" softbox, and then the 7-8' octabank. As I complete and finish each design, I'll start publishing the relevant parts of the ebook and provide backers with drafts and make any additions, improvements, or deletions based on feedback.

After all, the book needs to actually be easy to read and build from, otherwise, what's the point, right? :)
