About this project
Fuse is a revolutionary new product that makes your car smart and connects it to the rest of your life. Data is included for Kickstarter backers at the $60K project goal.
Just a few more days to go! We need your support to make Fuse a reality. Fuse is different from other connected car products.
Select the $139 reward if you have one car, the $269 reward it you have two cars, the $399 reward for three cars, and the $599 for five cars. If you've got more cars than that, contact us for a special reward.
We've also got a sponsorship level for people who really want to support Fuse.
Free Data: The rewards on the right say "90 days free service", but in fact, we're including free data service with the devices for all of our Kickstarter supporters. We won't be able to offer this after the Kickstarter campaign is over, so get the devices you need now to take advantage of this.
What is Fuse?
Your car knows a lot more than its dashboard tells you. It knows how fast you’ve been going on every trip, your fuel mileage, your tire pressure, and much more. It even knows what your engine light really means — before it comes on. In fact your car has hundreds of sensors with interesting stuff to tell you, if you only had a way to listen.
Now you do, with Fuse.
Fuse is three things in one:
- A smartphone app that gives you a second dashboard,
- An off-the-shelf gizmo that plugs into your car’s diagnostics outlet, and
- A personal cloud to connect your car with the rest of your life
We Need Your Help
We are coming to the Kickstarter community to help build this mobile app. We've already integrated an off-the-shelf sensor with our cloud-based platform and we're ready to collect and secure the data. We just need to build the mobile app.
Fuse’s gizmo routes all your car’s data from a plug under your dashboard to your cloud, and adds GPS data as well, so you can see exactly where your car has been. The mobile app we're building in this project combines that information with anything else it would be good to know and gives you new ways to experience your car.
For example, Fuse can learn your driving patterns and automatically classify repeat trips, such as a carpool. It can associate your contacts with a carpool pickup, and automatically shoot over a message as you leave home and again as you approach the stop. Fuse helps you focus on driving.
Track Your Trips
Fuse can associate trips with business, charity or other tax-deductible purposes. Fuse automatically tracks every trip you make: start and stop locations, distance, cost, and time. And Fuse learns your driving patterns so that it can automatically classify repeat trips. At the end of the year it's easy to report on your totals for tax and accounting purposes. Fuse saves you time and money.
Protecting Teen Drivers
Fuse can keep track of what your car is doing when it’s on the road without you — for example when your teenager is behind the wheel. You can learn more about your driving habits and those of others, and score them for safety, smart fuel use, and other measures. Fuse keeps you safe.
Managing Fuel Costs
Fuse connects to other apps, for example ones that tell you gas station locations and prices. By watching that data and your own fuel levels, Fuse can tell you when and where you’ll get the most for your money by filling up. When fuel prices are going up, Fuse will help you fuel more often, taking advantage of the lower prices today. When fuel prices are going down, Fuse will help you get more out of each tank.
Maintenance and Expenses
Fuse keeps a log of your car expenses, and can share those with your financial apps. It can also work with your calendar app to schedule oil changes, tire rotations, registrations, and inspections.
Fuse also solves the clues behind your dashboard’s Check Engine light, so you know more about what’s going on, and you can share the same information with your car’s mechanic.
How is Fuse Different?
Fuse is all yours. Its data lives in your own cloud, not in some centralized service. In that cloud are all the connections between your car and any variety of apps and databases on your computer and smartphone.
Personal clouds are a new development in computing, led by Kynetx, Fuse’s parent company. With Kynetx’ open-source CloudOS, any person can have their own cloud, and so can any device, including your car. Most importantly, all of those are exclusively under your control, so you can run your life the same way you drive your car: independently.
At a time when it seems like the rest of the world wants to monitor and control your life, Fuse is the first and only way you can monitor and control your own life, your own ways — starting with your car.
How Do You Protect My Privacy?
All of the data is yours, and yours alone. We never sell your personal or vehicle data. All of your data is encrypted in transit and placed in a private account that you control access to. Our team is comprised of privacy and identity experts. We subscribe to the Respect Trust Framework. We want you to have complete control over your information, as well as confidence that it will not be misused.
The OBD II Device
The app we're building for this project makes use of an OBD II device that contains a GPS and cellular radio. The device plugs easily into your car's on-board diagnostics port, also known as the OBD II port, a standard port for reading data generated by your car. Every American car built since 1996 has one of these ports.
Once plugged into that port, our device reads messages on the car's data bus, and sends data from those message, plus information from the device's GPS to your cloud where the app makes sense of them and provides the features we've outlined above.
We already have the device and have been using it with our platform for several months.
You can use any CalAmp LMU-3000 (GSM) or Xirgo XT-2000 (GSM) with the Fuse network and mobile app. To do so, your device will need to be reflashed to load a new script. Your device will also need a new SIM card to put it onto the network we use for device connectivity. Note: your device can only work with one network at a time, so making your device compatible with Fuse will mean that it no longer works with the system it is currently on.
If you sell your vehicle, you can easily transfer the data to the new owner, proving the value and maintenance history of the car they are buying. Any personal information is automatically stripped away, protecting your privacy while providing the new owner with all of the data they need about their car.
We will included data for all of our Kickstarter supporters as a way of saying "thanks" for helping us get this off the ground. Even though the rewards say "90 days free service" the fact is that the free service will extend for as long as you own and use the device. We won't change a monthly fee for using the device.
Risks and challenges
The hardware is off-the-shelf and we've already integrated it with our cloud-based platform. We even have a prototype in the form of a web app. Now we just need to make the iPhone and Android apps and tie them to the cloud-based platform and API that already exist. Building the app isn't rocket science, it just takes time, money, and energy to build a quality app.
Our team has a lot of experience building software, from the backend to integrating services all the way down to apps running on your phone. While we have built many services and apps, we can't anticipate every little detail in a project. We believe we have all the hard questions answered, but there's always a few unknowns that can crop up.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Every US vehicle sold after January 1996 has an OBD II data port near the driver's sear that Fuse can plug into. Not all cars support all data. The GPS and cellular connection always work, however and most of Fuse's functionality depends on those.
Fuse simply plugs into the easily accessible OBD II port that is already on your 1996 or later vehicle. There is a simple configuration accessed from a unique QR code or URL on the device that will allow your to set up your account. No tools are required and set up is simple and easy.
No, because of the generous support of a sponsor, the fuse data plan is included with the device that you'll receive as a reward. There is not data plan or monthly fee to use Fuse.
Fuse leverages a sensor plugged into your car, the cloud and a new mobile app to combine your life. The sensor connects using cellular technology to the cloud, constantly sharing the data into your private account. Using a sensor with built-in cellular technology enables you to get a constant stream of data from your car, even when you or your smartphone are not in the car.
Fuse doesn't require any pairing with a phone and works with multiple drivers. For example, Fuse works when your teen, with a plain old cell phone is driving the car. Or when your car is parked. See this update for more (http://kck.st/HGu7Yj)
The port must be within 3 feet of the driver and accessible without using any tools. Check in your car under the dashboard or under the steering wheel.
There is a list of compatible devices on the Kickstarter Page. At present we support two different models of cellular connected devices. We hope to expand later to include Bluetooth connected devices. There's a lot of different devices and little compatibility, so we're starting with just a few, however would ultimately like to see Fuse as the integration point for all.
You can move it between vehicles, but you'll have to update the profile to indicate the new vehicle. Switching is designed for moving it to a new car, not moving it back and forth between two cars.
Yes, the iPhone and Android apps will be using an API to access the logic behind all this and we will publish that interface. It's controlled by OAuth, so anyone will be able to use an app you build on the API to connect to their car on Fuse.
If you're interested in early access to the API, plus some devices to work with, look at the Developer package.
The simple answer is "yes, we have plans" but we don't have a time schedule yet. The device uses cellular and the OBD II port it can be country specific. We hope to have a Bluetooth only device in the future that uses a Smartphone. If you're interested in seeing Fuse come to your country, write and let us know where you are.
