We are a soon-to-be-open nanobrewery in Old Town Winchester featuring tasty beverages, a laid-back atmosphere and good times. We're also the only majority woman-owned and -brewed establishment in the state of Virginia (well, at least as far as we've been able to determine), which is pretty excellent. We love the Shenandoah Valley and we really love beer. We love beer so much that we think it should be made right here in Old Town. Women brewing in Virginia is nothing new - even before Thomas Jefferson made any beer at Monticello, his wife Martha was brewing small batches of beer every two weeks. Ok - so, women in brewing is awesome and all, but that's not all we're about...read on to learn more about us, our vision and where you can expect your funding to go!
We've got 2 crazy engineers on the team to help with the technical aspects of getting a brewery up and running - after all, it is manufacturing!
Bonnie and Arthur are both engineers who have been working with fermentation on a HUGE scale at a HUGE pharmaceutical company for over 5 years. They like science and stuff. They're smart. It's not unusual for one of them to whip out their thermodynamics textbook for reference. They're pretty good at things.
Then we've got 2 other normal people to help make sure the place doesn't get too geeked-out.
Jeff and Holly are both good at stuff, too. Obviously, they've got their posing for the camera down. Holly has extensive experience in customer service, marketing, and she smiles a lot. Jeff has a knack for the technical side of things, is our in-house physical therapist and has never had a cavity.
SURE. THEY LOOK GREAT, BUT CAN THEY BREW?
In addition to our totally charming personalities and dashing good looks, we've each been homebrewing for nearly a decade. Over the last several years we've learned as much as we can about brewing, techniques, ingredients and refining our palates. And for the last two years we've been developing our recipes to bring you the best of the best.
We plan to focus on a variety of beer styles. And since our brewhouse is so small (3 barrels ~100 gallons), we get to experiment! We'll have plenty of your usual favorite styles - IPA, brown, stout, etc - plus plenty of other options that maybe you've never had before! And of course, we'll keep our ingredient list as local and as fresh as possible.
We're working together to make this place a reality, so once we're open - come on in and meet us. You can guarantee we'll be there...pretty much all the time forever.
WE CAN DO IT!
We have already secured much of our funding to ensure our doors WILL open - but we need your help to make what's inside the best it can be! Make Winchester Brew Works your local Old Town brewery.
What will we do with the money?
- a beautiful 30-ft sycamore bar with lighting made from a real canoe*
- a giant indoor pergola to make you feel like you're on a patio even when the weather sucks
- community style beer-hall tables to keep your friends close or to make new ones
- more bathrooms - no one likes to wait in line
- a fancy new door off the parking lot = faster access to beer = happier you
*No watercraft was harmed in the making of this campaign. Only retired vessels will be used as lighting.
WANNA HELP? IT'S SO EASY!
- Create a Kickstarter account
- Log in with your username and password you chose (or Amazon account information)
- Choose the reward you want (glassware, growlers, private parties, oh my!)
- Tell everyone you know about this campaign and how pumped you are to have played a part in getting us to be your Old Town brewery! But seriously, tell everyone. Everyone you've ever met. Share it on Facebook and Twitter. Tell ALL the people.
While we'd love to offer you tasty beverages or a steep tasting room discount in exchange for your contributions, unfortunately it's against Kickstarter's rules and regulations. So, we came up with some super awesome alternatives! Read on, my beer-guzzling buddies to learn more!
You can check out the rewards in the column to the right. A lot of the rewards are bundled, so make sure you read all the way through!
For almost nothing at all, you can get 2 AWESOME STICKERS! High quality vinyl die-cut stickers in two different but equally fantastic colors.
A super-special limited-production extra-awesome t-shirt. Only folks who contribute can snag one of these. And we bet when you run into each other you can get a high five out of it. Designed and hand-screenprinted by our talented friend Shawn Price.
Glass and opener
Want a sweet stainless steel paddle-style bottle opener and a limited edition can glass to pour that now-open beer into? We gotcha covered.
Stainless steel growler
This thing is AWESOME. I mean, have you ever seen a better color? Try to not look at it. Go ahead. Try. Made in Richmond, VA by another super excellent startup just for us. Get the growler, fill it up in our tasting room, share with friends. Rinse and repeat.
Party under the pergola!
Do you hate cleaning your house for shindigs? Go ahead, you can tell us if you're a slob. With this reward, there's nothing to worry about! You, 15 friends, apps and 'serts, top notch service. We'll reserve the pergola for you all night long while you hang out, drink the beers, eat the foods and sit back while your 15 friends bask in the glow of your glorious party skills in our shiny brewery.
Plus, we have a couple other super cool rewards off to the right, so make sure you check them all out before deciding which one you want!
And now, because you helped us reach our goal, here are some stretch goals that we had only dreamed of!
$10,000 - This would help with additional construction costs, like our menu chalkboard/climbing rope/pulley system that lived in our heads but not yet in our budget! To reward all backers ($5 and up), you would get a special never-before-seen 4" round sticker and a hand-written thank you note from yours truly!
$12,000 - Seriously, if you guys make this happen, we'll just have to meet you all. We'll have a special night (a few weeks after opening) where all backers will be invited with 1 guest to come hang out with us at the brewery. I can't guarantee that we'll have beer-themed rock opera, but anything could happen. We would use the extra funding to get ourselves some really great equipment for the brewery, but also some great things like couches and bookshelves to enjoy in the taproom.
$15,000 - This would really just blow my mind. At this level, all backers of $50 and up would receive an extra 5 oz tasting glass along with their initial rewards! These are great for sharing beer with your friends or for building minuscule sandcastles. We don't judge. With this goal, we would be able to paint a giant 25' Valley mural in beautiful vivid colors across one wall of the tasting room. Help us make it happen!
Is there any shipping? Free shipping on rewards!!! Watch for a couple that are local Winchester pickup only.
How do I choose which t-shirt I want? Well, it's pretty much up to you to decide. But, we'll send out an email after the kickstarter to survey you on size and color. These are cotton classic fit adult tees, just fyi.
When will the soft open dinner be? Unfortunately, we can't give an exact date just yet. We can promise to give you > 2 weeks notice.
How will I get my rewards? We'll have your address from Kickstarter, but we will also send out survey emails in case you want it mailed somewhere else.
What if you don't reach your goal? Well, it means that NO rewards happen. So tell EVERYONE you know to make sure this all happens. For real.
What if I just want to give you money and goodwill? Our lowest level reward will only get your name on our website - but when you click on it you'll have the option to add more money to your donation. You can always give above-and-beyond at any reward level and we'll net all that cash. Thank you in advance.
What if I have more questions? You can submit a comment here on Kickstarter, or find us on facebook or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Risks and challenges
Every brewery has some risk with licensing and permitting and we are still waiting (and waiting and waiting) on our federal brewer's permit. It may take time, but we WILL get it.
The biggest risk you, our lovely backers, face in contributing to Winchester Brew Works is the fact that we are a new small business dealing with all the hurdles that every startup faces. We have very carefully planned for most any financial situation, but no startup is immune to cash flow issues. That's why we have Bonnie, AKA The Excelerator. Her love of spreadsheets and formulas knows no bounds and she's pretty much thought of everything.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
