Quackers is a real life true story about living at Atkinson Farms with Quackers, a Blue Swedish Duck, the chickens, Margaret, and other lovable animals. Without giving too much away---Quackers is a classic tale of a beautiful ducking plucked from a box and brought home to the farm--it's a tale about growing up, making friends, working with others, and finding his own way.
Garry and Deanna Atkinson live in Edmond, Oklahoma and have been married since 1983. They have three grown children. They use their 2.5 acre urban farm to stay connected to nature. When introduced to strangers, Deanna has been known to break into song from the Music Man to help others remember their names.
Being in their mid-50’s, they feel they’ve lived a lot of life and it’d be a shame to not share their road of hard-knocks insight with others. Laugh with them (or at them), they don’t care. The important thing is you’ve laughed!
All proceeds benefit the care and support of Quackers and his friends at Atkinson Farms. Deanna plans to share Quackers with local schools and children to promote literacy and educate about the care of animals such as Quackers.

Risks and challenges
A big challenge is working with a team of creative types and how to get published?! When you have a story, what is the next step when the big city seems so far away?
Author Deanna Atkinson contacted local illustrators and educators, Mike and Jime Wimmer who thought of the perfect up and coming illustrator---Kathryn McGaha. "Katie" was spending her senior year in HIGH SCHOOL working on her AP Portfolio for Art. Katie was a former student under Jime when she was teaching high school and again as a private student this past year.
Jime and Mike thought it was the perfect opportunity to work a real-life-learning scenario with a up and coming professional to be! Kathryn's ability to work with others, meet deadlines and really learn what it takes to work in the publishing field was a big step, but a successful one! Jime had run a successful Kickstarter Campaign with Copernicus and we are running Quackers too as a way to generate PR, pre-sales, and more! "KICKSTART it" so-to-speak!
Katie worked on 10 full page b/w illustrations and 7 spot illustrations for the book under contract. Teacher/Artist/Student/Writer collaborated on the editing and art direction of the illustrations---while Deanna also hired Jime to perform the design/layout aspects.
It's amazing what technology can do for us today in helping us accomplish our dreams----EVEN on a small farm!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
