About this project
ProtoPalette™ for Arduino Makes Building With Arduino Easier And More Fun Than Ever Before - Come See Us At #Maker Faire!
ProtoPalette™ helps you build amazing things.
Moldable to your unique learning style, ProtoPalette™ inspires you. The system actually helps you think through and test your ideas, from the most basic, to the wackiest stuff ever, ProtoPalette™ is the system that gets you there.
Once upon a time in New Orleans, Karl Alexius wanted to build a mood-o-meter for his niece. Karl gathered up an Arduino board and a some components, and began to explore. While his mood-o-meter vision was clear at the outset, Karl quickly found it hard to organize all the bits and pieces, and even harder to assemble components securely for testing. Keeping things fastened together was nearly impossible, and so became the primary focus of the project. Just finding the right components was a challenge, because everything came in little silver bags which were also hard to organize. What started out as a simple and fun project to make his niece smile became an unfulfilling challenge to both Karl’s mental and manual dexterity.
Meanwhile, in San Francisco, Karl’s friend Will Pemble (aka; #CoasterDad) was hard at work on his own Arduino based project. Will needed a simple magnetic sensor/actuator to engage the lift motor for one of his world-famous backyard roller coasters. Being no stranger to technology and computing himself, Will bought his own pile of Arduino components, a few soldering jigs, third hands, alligator clips, lights, project boxes, and other bits and pieces so he could get started - and finished - with his lift hill switch. Like Karl, Will instantly found that the real challenge in creating things with Arduino components was in keeping it all organized, simple, and clear. The creative vision got lost in the mix.
It takes so much mental energy to organize a simple electronics project that most people quit before they build what they envisioned. Because it is difficult - especially for inventor types - to stay focused on their creative vision and get things done, most Arduino* projects die in a pile of unused, misunderstood components.
- Hard To Organize
- Misplacing Parts For Completing Your Project
- Securing Pieces Is Cumbersome
- Parts Aren't Labeled
ProtoPalette™ Solves The Problem!
Will and Karl, all too happy to take a break from their frustrations in the world of runaway Arduino* component organizing, put their heads together to clearly define the problem, and come up with a wonderfully simple solution.

Risks and challenges
Making Stuff Is Hard.
Making Stuff That Makes Making Stuff Easy Is Even Harder.
ProtoPalette™ is designed to make it easier to make stuff. A lot easier. So, the main risk is that it may take us longer to get it done than we think it will. We have our sights realistically set on late November 2014 to ship the first ProtoPalettes to US backers and maybe even a few customers. That being said, we've been in the technology and electronics business long enough to know that ship dates can sometimes slip. We're managing this risk by communicating clearly with our vendors and suppliers, and by building as much of ProtoPalette in house as possible. If our ship dates look like they're going to slip, we will let you know sooner rather than later.
We are doing our own PCB design work in house, as well as doing our own prototyping, laser cutting, assembly and testing. As risks go, we believe these risks to be manageable and minimal.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
