You may think that publishing a book simply means writing the manuscript and sending it off to the publisher, who prints it and ships it to stores. In fact, there is much more to it than that.
First, every properly published book needs to be professionally edited. Then it has to be proofread. A beautiful cover has to be designed, because people really do judge a book by its cover. As much money as possible should be spent on advertising, because people can't buy the book unless they know it's there.
Of course it's possible to simply write the book, ship it off to Amazon, and sell it. But it won't be nearly as well done as it could be with all these resources. I simply don't want to publish it without making it as good as it can possibly be. But I can't do it alone!
Costs will break down like this:
Kickstarter fees etc: 10% of total (that's at least $750.00 CAD)
Professional editor (every writer needs an editor!): About USD $1,500.00 (Almost $2,000 CAD)
Custom cover design and manuscript layout: About $USD $1,500.00
Shipping of books to 50 backers: Between $750.00 to $1,500.00 CAD
Whatever is left over will be spent on radio spots and internet advertising.
