WILD VOICES: Messages from the Soul of Africa
WILD VOICES is a Book and Card Set that invokes the mystery and the messages from the WILD ANIMALS of AFRICA
Today is the 28th day of our Kickstarter campaign - the last day. We thank you for joining us on this adventure through Africa, your heartland. We've had fun waiting to see what Animal was choosing to come forward each day and we hope that you enjoyed reading the messages on Facebook and our blog, and looking at the beautiful drawings.
We have not been successful in raising our target goal which means that we do not receive any funding at all! This is undoubtedly a setback and we feel very disappointed but, like all good pilgrims we've already donned our hats and walking boots, picked up our staffs and are planning a new route forward through the jungles and deserts of this vast continent - AFRICA our heartland.
So later this year we hope to have the WILD VOICES: MESSAGES FROM THE SOUL OF AFRICA book and card set available to you to hold in your hands and spread the cards out to fully enjoy their impact! We will also make an e-edition available but you will have to order the cards separately to go with this.
So farewell fellow pilgrims, may your paths be smooth and the wind always at your back ... Africa calls.
With warm wishes from
Anne Keating and Diane Holmes (Mama Ka Grace)
WILD VOICES is a book and card set bringing you insightful messages from the Animals of Africa.
Hello, I'm Anne Keating the creator of the project and the author of Wild Voices. Diane Holmes, also known as Mama ka Grace, is the artist. We are both African born and have a deep resonance with this continent. We are in awe of the richness, the Animals and the atmosphere that is Africa and through the book and along with the cards, we’d like to share this with you.
Our vision is to produce a quality book and card set that brings the powerful presence of the African Animals to you. Through the book and the cards we invite you to connect with your deeper self – but we hope to do more than this: We see this work as helping us to explore our human experience with wild nature and to reflect on our current relationship with endangered wild Animals and their rapidly decreasing habitats.
As we have 28 cards in our WILD VOICES set, we have decided to dedicate one day of our campaign to each of these cards. It is an unusual decision to shorten the time period of a campaign to only 28 days but we feel that with the wild voices of our potent African Animals calling to our supporters, we will be assured of reaching our goal in that time.
This moon cycle of 28 days is a common cycle in nature; it is also the gestation period of many of our small, furry, wild friends as we hope it will be ours too!
NOT TO BE MISSED!
We will be inviting one Animal from our 28 card set to step forward and offer us a pertinent message for each day of the campaign. This message will be posted on our Blog and there will be Facebook and Twitter feeds every day of the campaign.
HERE ARE SOME OF THE WAYS WE WILL THANK YOU FOR FUNDING WILD VOICES:
NEW NOTICE! We have BONUS pledge gifts! For £1 you will now receive a digital Leopard poster, for £2 you will receive the Leopard and Gorilla digital poster and for £3 you will receive all three digital posters which includes Elephant. If you have already pledged for these amounts you too will qualify! All pledge levels that include the digital poster will receive all three printable posters!
Our book comes in e-book form, soft cover, or gift e-book.
1. Produce the Wild Voices soft-covered book. The production includes the editing, layout and printing of the book, the design of the book cover along with the creation of a beautiful box to hold the book and cards together.
2. We will have the Animal cards printed on 330gm high gloss card stock. In keeping with the majesty of Africa the cards will be a bold size of 150x90mm. The cards will appear with the book in the box. We have designed a pouch for the cards to accompany the e-book. This pouch made from bright African cloth, will be hand-crafted by local Zulu women from the Woza Moya project.
3. We will also produce an e-book thereby spreading the messages from the Animals of Africa even further.
4. We will create a website and blog which we hope you will use to communicate with us – we’d love to hear from you!
5. We will get your pledge gifts made up and posted off to you – we’re expecting it to take about 5 months, so please be patient.
6. The above are just the very basics to enable us to get into production. If we go over our funding target there is so much more to do!
Firstly, if we receive over our target goal, 20% of what remains after meeting external costs, will be donated to two wildlife protection projects close to our hearts. The first is the SKILDERKRANTZ PRIVATE NATURE RESERVE an initiative working for the endangered Cape Mountain Leopard (please read more about it on our Blog).
The second is to help prevent poaching; we will be giving a gift to Ranger Riaan who is an experienced field-guide and game ranger and who has been involved with the life-threatening on-the-ground anti- poaching work in southern Africa for many years. We have more information about Ranger Riaan on our Blog.
When this has been done we will be remunerating the many people who have gallantly helped us get this far. Reaching over our target goal will also enable us to print more stock runs as well as pay for the professional marketing of our work. We will also be able to improve the overall quality of the Wild Voices’ packaging.
The Wild Voices is a type of “oracle set”. One of my aims in writing the book was to help us to reconnect to the natural world and her wild Animals. It is a sad fact that so many of us today do not have easy access to wild nature. We might occasionally go outdoors where we use it as a backdrop for some activity; in these circumstances it is difficult to connect with nature in any meaningful way.
... Wild Voices is an eminently readable, profound, insightful and helpful work that will inspire people of all ages and cultures to look more deeply at their personal motivations and aspirations. Lorna Howarth, The Write Factor
.... stunningly beautiful images of elements and animals and in-depth explorations of each card's implications, both individually and globally. Molly Young Brown, author.
- to find your own answers to specific life-questions or to gain clarify on a specific situation.
- to find your Power or Totem Animal
- to find the elemental energy you need to be in sync with to prepare yourself to face a forthcoming challenge.
- for inspiration and support in your process of becoming whole and more of who you might be.
- for readings by intuitive and medicine healers to assist with their work.
The book also gives simple steps explaining how to journey into the other realms for physical and emotional healing.
Through these cards you tap into the essential quality of the Animal; while doing this you are touching your own true nature and allowing what is authentic in you to emerge.

“......... in this work Africa is symbolic of your inner self, your heartland. Every time you use these cards you are walking deeper into this intriguing landscape, your own inner landscape, where, with the Animals as your guide, you will learn to avoid the treacherous crags, but also enjoy the shade of the spreading Fig along soft sandbanks of the Zambezi River.
As a pilgrim you travel lightly – a staff, a book and a pack of cards. Any expedition into the unknown is rightly taken with trepidation – a pilgrimage into Africa even more so! It is not for the faint-hearted, but fear not Pilgrim, you have inner resources unknown to you. The guidance you receive from the Animals will fire up these extraordinarily rich resources, so that as you tread further into your heartland you become ever more confident and self- empowered...."
An endorsement for WILD VOICES from Lorna Howarth a contributing editor for RESURGENCE magazine, and founder of The Write Factor:
“Wild Voices is beautifully‐written, bringing unexpected and thought‐provoking analogies and metaphors to the fore: Africa as symbolic of our internal heartland; the Pilgrim entering the heartland and being sharpened by the landscapes and Animals met there; and the motivation towards survival and a deepening of the sense of who we are. All these elements are presented with reverence and authenticity. Wild Voices is an eminently readable, profound, insightful and helpful work that will inspire people of all ages and cultures to look more deeply at their personal motivations and aspirations. Coupled with the outstanding illustrations on the cards, Wild Voices is a beautiful work of creativity that will, I am sure, be valued for years by those who connect with its message.”
ONE OF THE FOUR ELEMENT CARDS from the WILD VOICES set.
AN ENDORSEMENT FROM MOLLY YOUNG BROWN teacher, writer, minister, psychosynthesis and ecopsychology counselor and author of Growing Whole: Self-Realization for the Great Turning and co-author with Joanna Macy of Coming Back to Life.
"Wild Voices functions like an African Oracle card deck, with stunningly beautiful images of elements and animals and in-depth explorations of each card's implications, both individually and globally. People will find deep wisdom and inspiring guidance for their lives in these cards and the accompanying text."
THE CAPE MOUNTAIN LEOPARD
If we receive funding over our target goal, 20% of what remains after meeting external costs will be donated to two wildlife protection projects close to our hearts.
Our WILD VOICES project also reflects our profound dismay and grief for the loss of natural wild habitats worldwide. With this loss of habitat comes the subsequent decline, and often complete extinction of much wildlife. We are going through an era of frighteningly rapid species loss and the first one that has been caused by humankind.
Help us to protect a little of the WILDNESS on our planet.
THE area covered by the CAPE MOUNTAIN LEOPARD PROJECT is found in the mountain regions of the Cape Province, South Africa. The Cape Mountain Leopard is smaller than the more northerly leopard and about half their weight. If you hear the sound of sawing wood while out walking in the mountains of the Cape, a leopard is near!
As a climax predator, this beautiful big cat plays an essential role in keeping the ecosystem in balance. The Cape Mountain Leopard is an umbrella species and requires a large habitat, and by conserving them many other animals are automatically conserved.
Less than 3% of the South African landscape is formally protected; this is not enough to ensure any species’ existence and therefore conservation on private land is desperately needed like at Skilderkrantz Reserve which we are supporting.
The Cape Mountain Leopard, the African Wild Cat and even the Caracal, all found in the Baviaanskloof and Skilderkrantz Reserve are under threat.
How will your donation help with this project? Wild Voices, through your funding, will be donating to the Landmark Foundation for their work on the Skilderkrantz reserve - like gathering data on the leopards so that strategies for their protection can be found. Visit our Blog for more information. The Landmark Foundation is a conservation NGO, registered as a Charitable Trust, as a Not-for-Profit Organisation, and has tax exempt status - Skilderkrantz Reserve works closely with the Landmark Foundation.
In these wild settings I learned to love, but also deeply respect, the animal life I came in contact with. Today I live on an eco-community farm where we hear the jackal call at sunset, see evidence of bushbuck in our organic veggie garden (!) and sometimes see the wild rooikat. We’ve never seen antbear but must avoid his large, deep holes when out walking. We live as lightly as we can.
WILD VOICES pulls together many threads for me; my deep wish to ‘give animals a voice’; to speak out about habitat degradation, species loss and the diminishing of the few truly wild spaces left on the earth. My fascination with the work of shamans worldwide, with dream work and my continuing study of eco-psychology are more threads I've drawn on to create this work. I invited Diane Holmes to work with me on this project knowing I could trust her intuitive drawing abilities, as well as knowing that as an African she had a connection to this land and its Animals. She also shares my deep interest in our human drive towards conscious psychological growth.
The illustration of the 28 cards as well as all the design elements of the project in a very real sense is my life's work as an artist so far. I found it interesting that I would invoke the quality of the animal I was working on in my own life. There was never the sense that this is just artwork as the Animal soul qualities took over and required of me to work with them as well.
Anne uses the WILD VOICES book and cards as the base for these popular and creative workshops. On the workshop you are invited to intuitively choose an Animal card; you tune in, then let go and allow the Animal’s message and your own inner wisdom to lead the process. You draw, paint, design, cut-out, collage or collect objects to create your own mandala. It is an empowering, creative process. Afterwards, the work you have done is consolidated in a deep inquiry where the group assists each other to search for meaning – this feedback discussion gives participants valuable insight and inspiration.
KUDU a mandala created using an old tin lid and other found objects; shells, flowers and wood chips, to represent the message he received from Kudu. George Kockott-South Africa “Thank you for an illuminating and cathartic afternoon. ... The Kudu looked me in the eye and said in no uncertain terms, DO THIS THING!"
THE CROSSING a mandala drawn in fine black pen and ink to represent the message she received from Zebra. Colleen Craik – South Africa “My initial, gut reaction on seeing this animal card was pure delight…. I was delighted because I felt the zebra had definitely chosen me.”
THE JOURNEY a mandala created using found objects, stone and ceramic fragments, to represent the message he received from Hyena. Richard Mather-Pike - South Africa “…the lovely workshop unblocked much for me and I am enjoying the inspiration.”
ACCEPTANCE a mandala drawn in watercolours and crayon to represent the message she received from Buck. Chantal Bezuidenhout - South Africa “Good for my soul. Thank you.”
INTO MY SOUL a mandala drawn in crayon and pen to represent the message she received from Elephant. Merell Cox – South Africa “Fully enjoyable and well worth it” and CROCODILE'S EYE a mandala drawn with water colours and chalks to represent the message she received from Crocodile. Louise Pietrucci - South Africa “I feel these workshops offer the chance to really, deeply connect with our beautiful, magical animals”

From Mama ka Grace to the GIMP developers who make this powerful graphics manipulation program available for free - the graphic design work and most of the WIld Voices artwork was painted digitally using your wonderful program. A HUGE heartfelt THANK YOU to all of you for your hard work!
Kickstarter differs from the usual online buying process. It is not simply a matter of buying an item through a website with the expectation of it arriving in your post box the next day; you are electing to join us for the next while on an exciting journey of creating and completing this project. Depending on whether we get funded more than our target there will be an e-book version, more standard book and card sets in a box all created with your help. Every pledge made by you counts!
1. Choose your Pledge Level description and take note of extra costs like international shipping.
2. Open a Kickstarter account and choose your preferred payment method.
3. Stay in touch to see what happens! If Wild Voices achieves 100% funding in 28 days your account will be charged and your pledge gift secured. If we are unsuccessful then you will NOT be charged.
4. If you believe in Wild Voices and know others who are like minded then please do send them an email; also get the news out on any of the Web 2.0 / 3.0 platforms of your choice.
If we achieve our goal we might just put on our wellingtons and do an ecstatic Isicathulo (the South African gumboot dance) in celebration, and then get the wheels rolling to complete our vision!
Here's a breakdown of our costs:
1. Production costs - illustrator, video production, book editing and layout, printing, cover design, the set’s box and card pouches, website design and hosting, pledge gifts.
2. Production of cards – The cards are digitally printed on 330gm high gloss card stock.
3. Kickstarter /Amazon, Blurb Fees
4. Buffer Amount – we are setting a small percentage for dropped pledges, lost books, refund requests, and any miscalculations.
5. Transport and handling costs.
Risks and challenges
Some potential problems we might face in the production side of WILD VOICES are firstly the making of the cloth pouches for the cards – this is a project being taken on by a group of lovely Zulu women who have a project called WOZA MOYA (which means "Come Holy Spirit" ). They must order all the materials needed for the pouch and this might take longer than expected.
Another setback might be a slower pace in the production of the box for the book and cards as four different businesses are involved in its successful completion – co-ordinating this line of production might be a challenge. Both these potential challenges can be met by us keeping a close eye on things and doing some loud chase-up if needs be! We feel that these are not insurmountable problems, but something that could slow down the pace of getting our book and cards to our generous backers. We're holding thumbs it's a smooth ride!
