Check out this review by Sit Down Standard:
Once upon a time there was a farm that grew Carob Beans. Carob Beans are grown as a cocoa substitute and for their vitamin value. Like any farm, this farm had rodents living on it. To be honest, it was infested with rats. Lots and lots of rats. For generations these rats had been eating the Carob Beans.
The farmer had a beautiful wife that loved to bake. More than anything she liked to bake pies ...All kinds of tasty pies. As the hot pies came out of the oven she would put them on the window sill of their quaint little farm house to let them cool off and the sweet aroma of the freshly baked pies would waft across the whole farm.
One day one of the rats noticed the pleasing fragrance and followed it all the way back the farm house. There he found a pie sitting at the window’s edge. He tried and tried as hard as he could but being just a single rat he could not move that pie off the window sill.
Not wanting to easily give up he quickly ran off to get some of his fellow rats with the promise of a piece of the pie if they would help him lift it off the window sill and carry it away. They were successful! ...Very, very successful! Over time they learned that different pies weighed different amounts and that they needed more rats to take the heavier pies. The rats also started forming groups or “crews” to try and steal the pies. They were becoming competitive, even among themselves, in their attempts to steal these delicious treats.
In the human world news quickly spread of this odd phenomenon and they became know as...
The Pie Rats of the Carob Bean Farm!
In Pie Rats of the Carob Bean Farm each player takes on the role of a Captain of the Rats and tries to build a crew of not-so-loyal rats in an attempt to loot the farmer’s wife of as many of her pies as you can. The heavier the pie the more rats it takes to steal it, the more points it is worth. The Captain with the most points at the end of the game is the winner.
The goal of the game is to be the player with the most points at the end of the game. To get points Captains (players) must gather enough crew members to loot the pies from the farmer's wife. The pies have different weights and the more a pie weights the more it is worth. Each turn is broken down into 6 phases. A marker card determines who is going first at the beginning of each phase.
Phase 1 - Reveal a pie. These are the cards you'll be trying to collect for points.
Phase 2 - Add charisma to your captain. Charisma is what is used to lure away crew members from other crews to yours.
Phase 3 - Play crew members. Crew members are what you use to help you loot the pies from the farmer's wife.
Phase 4 - Make a declaration: Lure or Protect. This is your change to protect your most valuable crew member. However, if you choose to protect them you forfeit your chance to lure a crew member away from another captain.
Phase 5 - Lure crew members to your crew. If you have chosen not to protect any of your crew in phase 4 this is your chance to try and lure crew members to your crew.
Phase 6 - Loot a pie. This is moment you've been waiting for. This is your chance to try and snag one of the farmer's wife's delicious pies!
Ah, but don't worry. It's not always that easy to get a pie. We have plenty of cards to help keep the game interesting and full of surprises!
With the Starter Deck you get all the cards listed in Red. This is enough to play a complete game, however, you will need to shuffle the discard pile frequently. This Deck will play 2-4 players.
With the Expansion you can play 2-6 players. The Blue column lists your total card - the Starter Deck plus the Expansion Deck. For example - you don't get 10 more pies, you get the original 10, plus two preprinted, plus two blank pie cards for you to create your own favorite pie - a fan card.
Many people find it fun to add to existing games so besides all the additional cards included in the expansion deck we have also included two of each type of card pre-printed - but blank - Captains, Crew Members, Charisma, Action/Item, and Pies. Use these cards to create your own Pie Rats cards. (These are referred to as fan cards because people that are fans of the game create their own cards for the game)
You will get to see the "Rat-a-tized" version of yourself when you receive your game. A little suspense just adds to the anticipation. You also get to name your captain. The name will need to be approved. Can't think of a name for your captain? This website can help you figure out your pirate name: http://www.piratequiz.com
In order to try and get this game out in a timely fashion you must send us a photo of yourself no later than May 15th. So you've got two weeks! Of course if you want to send it sooner, like within a few days from when you back that level, that would be fantastic. All the rest of the artwork is completed except for sponsored crew members.
The Bundle Pledge includes a copy of our previous game Lightning Dice. A quick paced game of competitive die rolling for 2-6 players. All players play all turn, every turn, until a victor emerges. Game play is about 15-20 minutes, ages 8+. The components of the game are: 50 cards, 36 colored dice, 6 pawns, 1 game board and a set of printed instructions.
Risks and challenges
Pie Rats is our third game we are bringing to market. We have all our manufacturers lined up and ready to go. With the exception of sponsored crew cards, all of the artwork is complete. We have worked with manufacturers both in the U.S. and China and believe we have allowed an accurate amount of time for completion of the game on time and we have teamed up with Ship Naked to help us deliver the games as quick as possible once we receive the components for the game.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
