A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.
Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.
Perfectly sized to carry repair essentials
Easily fits any regular size bike tube and even some fatbike tubes
Works with any bike (various mounting options)
Won't slip/slide around
Can stay on your bike or be easily moved from one bike to another
Ditch the hydration pack on most rides
Hi, I’m Alex Davies, mechanical engineer / bike nerd.
I realized something a few years ago… I like riding my bike a lot more without lugging around my heavy, overloaded hydration pack.
I used to bring it along for every ride, from 30-minute lunchtime escapes, to all day epics. Even though I wish that every ride were an epic, the truth is that most of my rides fall in the sub 2-hour category. I think that’s true for most of us.
So, naturally, I started leaving the pack in the trunk. Tubeless tires and the overall excellent reliability of modern bikes/components allowed me to get away with this for quite a while, but it eventually caught up to me when a burped tire had me walking miles back to the trailhead because I didn’t have basic tools.
Never again! I looked all over for the ideal solution to let me continue riding without the pack while still having essential tools handy, but everything I tried fell short.
That’s when I started working on Elements. All of the benefits of the alternatives are incorporated in the design of Elements and it shines where the others fall short.
Check out the video below to see a little more about my motivation for working on Elements and how it was developed.
One of the main issues I have with the other options on the market is their lack of compatibility. From current saddle bags, to generic frame bags, no one had an option that would work with EVERY bike. Some were close, but none nailed it. Elements is versatile and guaranteed to work on any bike because of the various mounting options.
Where and how things are made is also a major consideration for me. I knew from the beginning that it had to be made in the USA and made from high quality materials so that it would stand up to the most demanding riders. We selected materials to balance weight, durability, cost, and functionality. The oversized zipper is robust and easy to grab even while still wearing gloves.
We kept it as simple as possible to allow maximum flexibility and allow you to decide how to use Elements. We considered every detail to make sure that functionality was never sacrificed. High-grip tactical fabric on the underneath side keeps everything right where you want it and the zipper keeper makes sure the large handle on the zipper doesn't rattle over rough terrain.
All of the prototyping and material selection is complete. Once we have enough pre-orders for the first production run, we will be able to start mass production of Elements. We will begin fulfilling orders starting with our first supporters by mid to late April 2018 and should be able to get all orders completed and delivered by the end of May 2018 at the latest. This will get you out on the bike and ready to ride through the summer!
We have detailed a number of reward levels and also would like to work towards a couple of stretch goals to keep it exciting.
$2,500 - Option to complete Elements with an inner tube of your choice, a multi-tool with chain tool, tire lever, and CO2 cartridge. Add $30 per bag.
$3,000 - Unlocks first color option (selected by poll of Kickstarter supporters). No extra cost once unlocked.
Each additional $500 unlocks additional color options until all have been unlocked.
Feels great to RIDE READY without the pack!
Risks and challenges
We have tried to reduce many of the risks as much as possible. We will be able to address any issues that arise very quickly because we have chosen to keep manufacturing local. The majority of our prototyping work was completed by our manufacturing partner that will be producing Elements for us in mass. We have a good relationship and work well together. Also, all of our materials are already sourced and some have already been delivered and are ready to go, this should mitigate most delivery issues.
However, we recognize that no amount of planning can eliminate all possibility of something going wrong and promise to stay transparent through the entire process. If something comes up that affects our estimated delivery dates, our supporters will be kept in the loop as we work to correct it.
