BASE by Wiivv - Custom, 3D Printed Insoles

BASE by Wiivv is a body-perfect insole that is engineered to maximize comfort, promote alignment and lessen fatigue. Your pair of BASE insoles will closely follow your unique foot curves to give you the support and stability that you need to keep going. To customize your pair of insoles and get measured, all you need is 5 minutes and a smartphone. With this kind of convenience, you’ll never want to go for off-the-shelf again.
Getting your BASE insoles is easy. 2D images are taken through the Wiivv smartphone app to capture the unique contours of your feet. These images are verified by an expert and processed in Wiivv’s blazing-fast customization engine to produce a 3D-printable file for a pair of insoles to perfectly fit you and you only. This unique file is then sent to enterprise-grade 3D printers that use SLS technology (a system of powerful and precise lasers) to build a durable and flexible shell. Finally, skilled workers use their crafting knowledge to deftly apply a beautifully designed top layer along with features to further improve comfort, like silicon treads and cushions.
In a kinematic analysis done by a 3rd party, BASE custom insoles were seen to significantly reduce joint loading in the knee and hip – which can translate to increased performance in endurance sports. They give you more control with every step you take and help spread the impact force of walking and running activities to areas best suited for absorption.
Our specially designed heel cup delivers optimum stability, shock absorption and comfort. The “hole in the heel cup” design was created in collaboration with pedorthic experts to reduce heel raise. Reduced heel raise is a key feature that allows users of BASE insoles to keep the built-in or removable insoles of their current footwear. The ¾ shell delivers biomechanical neutrality, lessens pressure on the forefoot, and offers better stability.
The first step to getting your BASE custom insoles is to download the Wiivv iOS app, where you will create your very own pair of custom, 3D printed insoles in 5 minutes or less. (Note: iPhone and iPod touch available now. iPad and Android will be available by the summer.) Inside the app, you’ll have a wide range of artsy colours, designs and comfortable top sheets to choose from. Video walkthroughs will guide you through capturing two photos of each foot for the measurement step. That's all you'll need to do! No expensive consultations with your local foot specialist, and no need to try on dozens of flimsy insoles at the pharmacy. Wiivv makes true comfort accessible to you for only $75 (MSRP) per pair of custom insoles.
Function always comes first, but style matters too. We invested in the details of our product, from your name engraved on the bottom of your Wiivvs to the variety of beautifully designed top layers.
Below is the actual package BASE insole backers will receive in the mail. Each one includes a custom pair of Wiivvs with the design options chosen inside the app, a usage guide, and a massage ball to relax your arch muscles.
To use the physical product, place it on top of your shoe’s factory-installed insole, and push it back so it’s nestled neatly in the heel area. For better positioning, we recommend that you be seated when inserting your feet.
Led by Wiivv's own biomechanics team, BASE’s development was done in partnership with experts in the fields of sports medicine and orthopaedics in the effort to create the ultimate custom insole. The team identified and improved on critical design features that affect insole comfort and effectiveness, such as the medial/lateral arch shape and offset, insole contour and thickness, shock absorbing heel pad, cushioning top layer, insole length and shape to maximize flexibility in 1st MPJ joint, and heel cup shape and depth.
We enlisted a group of 100 superheroes in our West Coast community to stress-test and fine-tune the product we bring to market. We put a specific focus on people who spend full days on their feet as part of their work - we call them “the industrial athletes”. The group of people tested include fire-fighters, servers, nurses, and film industry veterans.
BASE fills the wide gap in the product offerings available between a corrective orthotic and an off-the-shelf insole. Corrective orthotics are usually custom, but are costly. Off-the-shelf insoles have lower price points, but they do not fit your unique contours.
We want to create a meaningful stretch goal that will incent our backers to join us. If we reach $250,000, we vow to offer ALL of our backers a promo code for a $25 discount on a pair of BASE insoles after we have completed fulfilling our Kickstarter pairs. You can use this code for a second pair of insoles for another pair of shoes - or perhaps you will gift them to a friend. Those who buy multiple - will receive a code for every pair purchased.
Our design process went through a year of R&D that resulted in 8 generations of feature sets and an astounding 72 product iterations. Having vigorously tested our product and the viability of our platform, we are unique in our ability to fulfill orders shortly after completing a successful Kickstarter campaign. The Wiivv platform is all about on-demand customization. Giving backers access to our product in record-time is just another application of that philosophy.
We have developed a suite of technologies that we call our ‘Adaptive Manufacturing System’. This system can be applied to make any device for the human body customizable with disruptive levels of convenience and affordability for the end user. The core component of the Adaptive Manufacturing System is our proprietary product customization engine. In seconds, the engine interprets data from the human body and spits out 3D print-ready files that are perfectly custom and optimized for biomechanics.
Below, you’ll see one of Wiivv’s printers manufacturing a batch of custom insoles. That’s followed by the delicate separation and preparation of parts by our technicians before our skilled handworkers add the finishing touches.
Wiivv is headquartered in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and has an R&D and manufacturing facility in San Diego, California.
Wiivv was co-founded by Louis-Victor Jadavji and Shamil Hargovan in 2014 with the drive to make body-perfect gear, including custom insoles, accessible to the masses. Ben Wynne, a former HP Labs 3D technologist and Wiivv’s Chief Technology Officer, leads a strong technical team that includes experts in biomechanics, mechatronics, mechanical, software, and computer vision engineering.

It is a daunting feat to scale up a company with the capability of mass customizing 3D printed goods. The key elements to success are expertise and capital. We have dedicated the last 12 months to creating a suite of technologies that we call an ‘Adaptive Manufacturing System’ which begins with digital capture and ends with manufacturing of a made-to-fit 3D printed product. We have achieved this with having the right team on board - with CTO Ben Wynne - former 3D technologist from HP Labs leading the charge.
The funds raised on Kickstarter will allow us to focus on the last step of the process: manufacturing and fulfilling the product we have spent a year developing to a group of early adopters. We are obsessed with a vision of 100% satisfaction and want to keep our promise to deliver all goods within 3 months of our campaign. In fact - we want our first adopters to have their pairs delivered 2 weeks after digitization. This is our promise as a company long term - and we want to demonstrate that we can - and will - make good on that.
