We need to record, like a vampire needs…
No, more like the flower needs the rain
Something really cool happened when Marina and I started writing together. Great songs like This One Is For Me.
But also she showed me a song by Russian artist, Yuri Loza, thinking we could cover it. So we started working on the translation, and took a flyer on getting in touch with Yuri. Eventually we got a message back and after a few exchanges, we had the first official translation of his huge hit song, as well as his blessing to go forward with recording and releasing it. A gigantic honor for us. It will be the title song of our third album. "FREE"
We have two great albums out already. We really thrive in the studio. But the last one came out in 2013. Many great songs have been written since then. AND most importantly, our prior albums didn’t have a promotion/publicity budget.
We’re learning though. For one thing, don’t release a non-holiday album in late November. For another thing, it needs to be promoted properly.
So if we hit the base budget of $10,000, that gets us recording now and money that we would have put into a gradual recording process gets saved and put towards publicity and promotion. If we get anywhere near our stretch budget… well, lookout world.
Studio Time/mastering: $9,000
Radio Promotion/Publicity: We’ll save, borrow and beg
Studio Time: $12,000
Domestic Radio Promotion: $4500
Int’l Radio Promotion: $3500
This shirt of John has become really popular so we decided to make it into one of our perks. Or if you want your own image on a shirt, you can send in a photo and we'll send you back a design you can print. Higher resolution images with good contrast and detail work the best. How it will go: You'll send me an image or a few; I'll send you feedback on whether the image will work well, and send you a proof. We won't be done until you're happy with it.
There’s a deep joy we feel when we do this and we want to share it with the whole world. That's why we want you to be part of this. As Chad puts it, we are "friends in the crusade to create art that will improve life as we know it!" Thank you!
Risks and challenges
Our biggest challenge has been getting the music out there. Both albums I funded the recording myself over the course of about a year and a half each. Not surprisingly, that can make you rather poor and getting any money together to pay for radio promotion is a large challenge. Months after our second album released in November, 2013, I eventually saved enough to do a radio promotion. But it was late, and I was going to the wrong promoter for this type of music. It didn't really go anywhere significant.
But since then I've really looked into the right people to work with. I have a radio promoter who got our Christmas song to a lot of stations domestically and in Western Europe last year. He's the right guy for us. I've found a great promoter in Central and Eastern Europe which will be crucial to the success of "Free" as it is a very familiar and loved song there.
