About God of Blades
God of Blades is a 2.5D sidescrolling action RPG for iOS devices that vividly depicts an epic retro-fantasy, sword and sorcery saga. Players assume the role of a nameless spectral king standing resolute against the march of a devouring, void-crazed horde on a dying world. Wrenching this world from the grasp of oblivion, the player wields phantom blades forged from the legends and heritage of the vanishing planet. Emergent, physics-driven swordplay, procedurally generated nemeses, and persistent character development propel the player through lush environments crafted in the fashion of traditional Japanese narrative scrolls and 18th and 19th century moving panorama.
God of Blades is more than just a sidescrolling adventure. The game is conceived of as a re-interpretation of a series lost 1940s-1970s paperpack novels that once formed a rich fantasy universe but have been erased from our collective memory. The covers of these novels are slowly being unveiled on our website and will continue to be released throughout production. We’re asking players to think about memory, culture, and loss in terms of stories, books, and the communities that love them. What happens to us when our stories disappear? What if we could stop it? We want to repurpose and redirect our love of sidescrolling brawlers and RPGs to promote communities and literacy. To do this, God of Blades will be incorporating real world data into the game in innovative ways.
Who's Making God of Blades?
White Whale Games is a newly formed studio in Austin, TX. White Whale designs and develops games that thoughtfully present the player with elegant, meaningful, and realized worlds. The core team is made up of Jason Rosenstock, George Royer, and Jo Lammert.
Jo Lammert recently earned her MS in Information Studies in the School of Information at the University of Texas at Austin, with a focus in digital collections, digital libraries and social media. She previously lived in Los Angeles, and worked on a variety of projects in production and development, from cartoons to soap operas.
In addition, we're working with a fantastic programmer (Adrian Lopez-Mobilia), an animator (Jesse Slate), and a composer (Justin Kovar), all hard at work to build the universe that is God of Blades.
Since July, the White Whale team has funded all business operating costs and production costs, purchasing software, hardware, and licenses for iOS devices. In that short time and on that small budget we have created a beautiful universe. For the White Whale team, this is a full-time project, with a tightly managed project schedule. We’re eager to bring this game to phones and iPads everywhere without delay, but our personal resources are running low. To keep momentum, we need your help. An intense amount of time is still needed to be put towards gameplay, design, sound effects. We want to make sure our team members are compensated for their time and talent. The support we receive on Kickstarter will help keep our team afloat and help us give God of Blades the polish it deserves.
