About this project
WEST of OZ is a comic book retelling of the L. Frank Baum's 1900 classic children's novel 'The Wonderful Wizard of OZ', with a wild west twist.
The year is 1868, and Dorothy Gale is lost in the weird and wild land of OZ. After being torn away from her family's Kansas farm by a mysterious storm, Dorothy is alone and lost in a strange land. She has to make her way along the old 'Golden Rail' to Emerald City, where she can collect the Wizard's bounty on a Wicked Witch and try to find her way home.
Along the way, she will cross paths with the familiar characters we all love from the original story. Issue #1 features; The Scarecrow, The Munchkins, and The Witch of the East!
Issue #1 of 9 tells the story of how Dorothy came to arrive in OZ, how she met the Scarecrow, and why they set out on the path to Emerald City.
WEST of OZ - Issue #1 of 9
The goal of this project is to create a standard 30-page full-color comic book.
This includes 22 pages of story art, 4 pages for Covers, and 4 pages that will include dedications, full title credits, and the Special Thanks section.
All of the artwork is already 100% complete. The Colorist is toiling away at her desk on the last few pages as we speak. The lettering will be the last part of production before print, and is set to begin when the Kickstarter reaches its goal!
UPDATE: Here is a look at a few fully Colored and Lettered pages!
This is the first in a 9-issue comic book series. Stretch Goals and additional money will go toward funding additional issues of the comic!
WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO
Now that you have heard about the project lets talk about the money.
Target Goal! $2,000
We are asking for a minimum of $2,000 USD to complete this project. This amount will go directly toward paying
Colorist: $ 450
Letterer: $ 250
Cover Art: $ 200
The remainder will be used to pay for the cost of Printing, Kickstarter Reward Fulfillment, Kickstarter-related fees, and any remaining S&H fees, in that order.
If we reach the $2,000 goal, we will be able to make a great comic and get it out to the world to see!
Break Even! $5000The largest Stretch Goal for the project is really the goal of any artistic project: to Break Even!
If we reach $5,000, we will have made enough to pay the creators! The creation of WEST of OZ was an artistic labor of love, and it was written, story-boarded, rewritten, drawn, and inked by Co-Creators Nick Winand and Sean Benner over a year-long period.
"What this Goal really means to us is that we get to follow the dream of making comics for a living. To be able to not only share our stories and art with everyone but to get paid for it would be a dream come true."
The Story Continues! $10,000
A dream come true! With this level of funding, we would be able to not only finish Issue #1 of WEST of OZ, but we can begin funding production of Issue #2!
When we created WEST of OZ, we created storyboards and script outlines for all 9 issues of the Series. These other issues already exist in the roughest form, and all that we need to make them as real as WEST of OZ #1 is the additional money to pay Creative talent.
With a total Creative Cost of roughly $4,000 before taxes to develop and produce an issue, $10,000 would secure the backing we need to continue the WEST of OZ story for another installment!
If we are extremely successful, every $5,00 after the $10,000 mark will contribute toward the Creative Cost of making another issue of the 9-part Series!
- With $10,000, we can show you what happens when Dorothy and Scarecrows journey into the haunted wood!
- At $20,000, we could get the entire OZ gang together and steaming their way along the Golden Rail toward Emerald City!
- It will cost a total of $45,000 to tell the entire 9-issue story of the WEST of OZ saga.
When we have created all 9 Issues, we hope to seek funding for the creation of a 220-page Hardcover Collectors Edition that contains all 9 Issues of the comic, the cover art, and exclusive concept art and script excerpts.
Here are some pages from a previous comic that Writer Sean Benner and Artist Nick Winand worked on together;
Risks and challenges
The bulk of production is complete, and all that remains is to polish and package it into the best comic possible. There is nearly no risk the book will not be produced if we meet our goal.
We will maintain regular communication about project goals and deadlines with Backers and keep them up-to-date through Kickstarter with Weekly Updates for the length of the Campaign, and regular updates until completion.
The only real danger is a delay related to shipping or printing, which would set the fulfillment timeline back slightly, but would not cause the project to fail.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
