Skyvault is a fantasy adventure across dozens of worlds that will initially run for 12 half-hour episodes. Set in a fictional cluster of solar systems based on Texas geography, the story focuses on three individuals who decide to leave their lives of safety and familiarity in search of greater purpose in far-off lands. Their slow voyage to the stars barely begins before they encounter a mysterious group of individuals who grant them the ability to instantly jump to any world of their choosing, but only if they also agree to follow orders...
Our three protagonists are Jay Harper, an excitable former temp with a reckless thirst for adventure, Kat Bryson, a self-employed bodyguard in search of a private place to call her own, and Truman Perry, a disrespected academic who's determined to uncover the lost secrets of the past.
Harking back to old adventure serials, Skyvault will be filled with eccentric characters, exotic locales, exciting action, and existential discoveries. It takes inspiration from classics like Indiana Jones and combines the aesthetic with more modern ensemble "road trip" shows like Firefly and Avatar: The Last Airbender. Each episode reveals a new corner of a deep and ancient world through the continuing adventures of our lovable heroes.
We are Door Monster Entertainment, an Austin-based production company that rose from the chaos of Youtube after nearly ten years of hard work. For the past three of those years, we've produced one comedy short per week, plus behind-the-scenes features and a wide variety of extras. We've grown from a group of friends with fewer than a thousand subscribers to a group of professional friends with nearly 200,000, and we've gathered what we proudly claim to be the best and most supportive community the internet has to offer.
From the beginning, our true passion has been in long-form storytelling. To date, we've produced 7.5 hours of comedy sketches and successfully funded and completed a superhero film right here on Kickstarter. For the first time ever, we feel capable of gathering the necessary resources to bring one of our most ambitious projects to life.
This thing is huge. We've got the skill to pull it off, and a decade of experience in stretching a dollar, but we still need the resources, and we still need the manpower. The largest portion of our budget will go toward paying our primary cast and crew during production so that they can give it their full and undivided attention. The rest will go toward costumes, props, locations, food, makeup, special effects, insurance, and anything else that makes the production process easier.
Our initial goal is $150,000. At that amount, we will be able to make this series. It will be a struggle, and it won't be quite as flashy as we'd like, but we can still do it, and we will. Below is an estimated breakdown of our bare necessities budget distribution:
At this level, the production value won't rise too far above the best of our weekly Youtube sketches. But as we start hitting some of our stretch goals, things get exciting. Here's a look at how far Skyvault could go:
$150,000 - WE CAN DO IT
We can make the project! Also, if we make it to this point before the campaign ends, we can open up Paypal donations for anyone who isn't able to give through Kickstarter.
$220,000 - CAST AND CREW BONUS
We'll not only be able to pay the existing cast and crew a more livable wage, but also offer paid roles for all the colorful characters that populate the world of Skyvault. This will dramatically increase our pool of available actors, and consequently the quality of acting as a whole.
$350,000 - PRODUCTION BONUS
We can produce Skyvault comfortably and professionally with better equipment, better props, better locations, and better insurance! The production value of Skyvault will spike at this amount, with noticeably improved visuals, audio, and set quality.
$500,000 - BELLS AND WHISTLES
We can really start having some fun. Good CGI, professional makeup, and some sweet stunts can all be afforded if we make it to 500k.
$1,000,000 - THE NEXT BIG THING
All we're missing now is publicity, and with double our last goal, we can sure as hell get it! If we hit a million dollars, we can go all in on advertising and take control of our distribution options.
Regardless of which goal we hit, our plans are to partner with a distributor to try and get Skyvault onto a major online platform like Netflix. This will mark Door Monster's first major step from Youtube Channel to Production Studio.
During this entire campaign, we will be hosting daily live streams on our primary video platforms - Youtube on the weekends, and Twitch during the week. We'll be playing games, interacting with the community, and keeping track of our progress over the course of the month.
We'll also be doing daily giveaways, with items like Door Monster merchandise, signed scripts, and props from our past videos, with new items added throughout the month!
Risks and challenges
There's no doubt this project will be a challenge, but we always finish what we start, and if our lowest goal is all we get, you can trust we'll squeeze every last bit of value out of that budget. Our primary writer/director/producer hasn't even included money for himself at the highest stretch goal - we're in this for the art!
We're putting in months of preparation before production begins in September, including location scouting, casting, and full rehearsals. We'll also be searching for supplementary funding from independent donors, film grants, and relevant product placement deals.
