WANTED: One couple for one-way mission to Mars.
Whitehorse formed in 2011 and it has been a whirlwind adventure ever since. When we read a story in the news about a search for a couple to send on a one-way trip into space, we couldn’t help but think of this as a metaphor for what it’s meant to us to make this new band. It’s the sweetest of all possible disasters.
In a short time, Whitehorse has grown into something bigger than we expected. It’s because of you, the fans, and your grassroots support and enthusiasm. On stage and in the studio, we have let our imaginations run wild. The results have been a variety of different projects (two albums, a live EP, French EP and more to come) and constant reinvention and exploration of new sounds.
Now, we are making a new record and we want you to be a part of it. We’re going to make the best album we can make and share it with you from start to finish. We want to include you in the experiences we get excited about - the first time we share it with friends, the first time we see the album art, the conversations we have about which song should be the first single, and so on. We want you to experience the whole process with us.
What will it sound like? We don’t know! We want to feel that he music we make is fresh every time we go into a recording studio, so this time, for the first time ever we’ve hired a producer. We may not know exactly how this is going to change things, but we’re excited to find out.
Here’s a new song called Pins & Needles. We don’t know if this song will be on our next record, but we are sharing it here it to show you how our process works.
Risks and challenges
Rather than thinking of this Kickstarter campaign as a fundraiser or donation, we are looking at it as a pre-sale for an album that will be made no matter what (so there’s no risk that it won’t be completed), and an opportunity to involve friends & fans in the process. Our record label, Six Shooter Records, is a small, dedicated group who we’ve worked with for years (more than a decade, in Luke’s case). Six Shooter is encouraging us to try this new means of connecting directly with our fans. Having our label and managers involved in the campaign means that we can focus on our jobs, making a killer new album, and they can help out with the details (mailing t-shirts, organizing listening parties, etc.).
We’ve brainstormed incentives that we think you, the fans, will want, and we, the artists, will be able to deliver. It’s all about the music, and the long creative process that leads up to having a finished album in hand.
Shipping and fulfillment is always a logistical challenge. We have researched and estimated shipping costs as realistically as possible, and we understand the effort it will take to deliver incentives on time. Six Shooter is committed to providing excellent customer service, as always.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
