Owlbears are fictional creatures that can be found in a myriad of fantasy role-playing games. In most cases, they are ferocious monsters that have the burly body of a bear and the head of an owl.
Whimsy Works' Owlbears are super cuddly, extra soft, and non -aggressive versions of these fearsome predators. These Owlbears are designer plush toys with role-playing game themed Paunch Patches on their tummies.
Owlbear Plush details:
- Height - 12 inches
- Fabric - faux fur and ultra-soft minky
- Paunch Patch - role-playing game related embroidery on the d20 die silhouette on the tummy of the Owlbear
- Embroidered details including eyes, eyebrows, and d20 die shaped paw pads.
Whimsy Works is a labor of love between two geeky, tabletop gaming parents, Jeremy & Andi Smith.
Andi Smith, the founder of Whimsy Works, is a proud geeky gamer mom. Her passion for gaming and her love for children inspired her to found Whimsy Works and later develop the Wee Beasties and Owlbears brands.
In the first series of the Owlbears line our primary goal is to fund the Fireball Owlbear. Once we successfully reach this goal we will focus on unlocking other Owlbear plushies via stretch goals.
Having plush/stuffed animals mass produced is a costly endeavor which is why we've chosen Kickstarter to help us make these Owlbears a squishy, huggable, plushie reality.
The majority of the cost is the production of the plush. Second to that are the shipping fees which can be quite a hefty sum. Finally, there are assorted fees for Kickstarter, PayPal, BackerKit, etc.
Fireball is a feisty, fiery fellow with the ability to cast an explosive spell...sometimes by accident.
Fireball will look like the prototype pictured but he will have orange fur to match the dark orange fireball on his Paunch Patch.
If you're shipping address is outside of the United States, please contact us about backing this project.
International shipping rates can vary and can be quite expensive. These shipments can also come with import fees from your government. We have no control over the import fees.
Shipping costs for international backers will be charged separately after the campaign ends once we know what your package will cost to ship. If you'd like an estimate, please ask and we'll do our best to get one for you.
If we meet our goal for Fireball we will then focus on unlocking more Owlbears plushies! Once the Kickstarter campaign closes you will be able to choose from any of the unlocked plush designs for your reward.
Most folks have a fair weather relationship with Icosa the d20 Owlbear. Maybe it depends on the roll of his dice? With blue-green eyes and cuddly grey fur, his red d20 Paunch Patch certainly stands out!
Faerie Fire can outline concealed subjects with a soft, magical light. She often does this to be helpful but quite often she can be a thorn in the side of rogues and others who prefer to remain hidden.
We do not have a prototype of Faerie Fire at this time but we will have the plant design her as soon as we've unlocked Icosa. We will ask the plant if a pastel rainbow fabric will be available for her body fur. If not, we will use a pink faux fur that closely matches the concept design.
Magic Missile might randomly attack the darkness but he's really a super sweet Owlbear once you get to know him. His grey fur and tubby black tummy are a sharp contrast to his aqua eyes and Paunch Patch.
As with Faerie Fire, we do not have a prototype of Magic Missile at this time. Once Faerie Fire is unlocked we will request a prototype for Magic Missile.
We have many other designs just waiting to be unlocked! These designs include but are not limited to:
- General Gaming Owlbears such as GM & Rules Lawyer
- Spells Owlbears such as Goodberry & Bless
- Class Owlbears such as Rogue, Monk, Bard & Druid
- Skillls, Feats, and Actions Owlbears such as Pick Lock, Perform, Cleave, Grapple
- And many more!
BACKERS! Please post in the comments to help us decide which Owlbear should be our next stretch goal AFTER Magic Missile! You can find an updated roster of Owlbear designs at our website: here. If you have an idea that we don't have listed we would love to hear from you!
If one Owlbear isn't enough, add $25 to your pledge for each additional plush Owlbear you'd like. Any Owlbear plush unlocked during this Kickstarter campaign will be available to add-on to your reward for $25 each.
Once the campaign ends they will retail for $30-$35.
One of the strongest ways you can help the Owlbears (besides backing for an Owlbear of your very own!) is to BOOST THE SIGNAL!
Please share the Owlbear Kickstarter Campaign on one or more of your favorite social media accounts. If you belong to websites or forums that would be interested in the Owlbears, please share with them as well.
So, share, share, and share again! Sharing periodically throughout the duration of the Kickstarter is incredibly helpful. Every share has the potential to help us reach our primary goal and unlock stretch goals!
We also want to give a special shout out to Delapouite and the awesome folks at http://game-icons.net/. While many of our Paunch Patch designs are made in house, we also use the fantastic icons (edited and unedited) that Game Icons has available thanks to their Creative Commons license. We of course did our due diligence and contacted them and they were very accommodating! Thank you!

Risks and challenges
We learned a great deal from our previous plush toy Kickstarter. One of the things we learned was to expect the unexpected!
Potential challenges may include issues or delays at the plant. This may be during production but may also occur during a design phase if we are able to unlock additional designs. Some factors that may cause a delay is finding and sourcing the proper fabric for a particular design.
If we are able to unlock stretch goals that do not have a completed prototype then there may be a delivery delay as we perfect the design.
There may also be issues or delays with customs when the items are shipped to us.
We have done our best to include possible delays when estimating the delivery date. We believe that open communication is key and to that end in the event of delays or any changes we will let you know via Kickstarter project updates.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
