**Please note that the funds raised are in Canadian dollars, so we are looking for about $11,600 USD.
Additionally, this is really about building community around this project and supporting its launch to a larger audience, there is no donation too small.
This film has been a long time in the making.
If you have already contributed to this campaign through our website, please know that the funds have been spent on production and contributed to us getting as far as we have. If you want to also help see it through, we'd love that. Thank you!
I have used a video clip from our previous campaign as, at the moment, we are focused on editing the film and will make a trailer for it as soon as we're done with the film itself.
I first met Candice in 2013 when I was making a documentary film called "Inside Her Sex". Initially the film was about women and pornography and Candice was an interviewee. However, as the film morphed and took shape it became about female sexuality and shame and Candice played a significant role in the production.
After we first filmed together I phoned to ask Candice if I could see her again, if we could film more. She agreed but asked me if I would be willing to help her tell her own story too. To make a film where she could tell her own story in her own words. She wanted to talk about her career, but also to talk about her mother (who left and abandoned her (and her sister) when she was 18 months old), her childhood and her cancer.
Many who know of Candida Royalle know her as a porn star, but that is only a small part of her story. Candice pioneered a genre of film, erotic movies for woman and couples, she was a feminist and blazed a trail, fearlessly promoting and speaking about her work for decades. In this era of #metoo, her work, her values, her strength and her voice are still valid, they echo through time to find her standing here, with us.
Candice and I worked together for a year and then, in 2014, launched an initial campaign to raise funds to see the project through. Unfortunately, we only raised a small percentage of the money through the campaign but pushed forward to generate some of the funds through private donations.
That initial seed money allowed us to do some more filming together. I donated my time and equipment, paid for airfares & travel etc. We went to St. Louis to meet Candice's brother, 'Jimmy', who she hadn't seen in over 60 years, and her Uncle Tommy, her mother's brother, whom she had never met.
We filmed where she grew up in different boroughs of New York City. We filmed where she lived in San Francisco, we filmed at her home on Long Island.
After Candice passed away in September 2015, I struggled to continue with the film at that time. Lacking time, money and backing + missing Candice found me putting it on the backburner. But I struggled to leave it there.
I knew I'd promised her I would follow through on telling this story, the story we'd worked on together, the story that allowed her to tell her own story in her own words. I also knew it was a good story with a powerful message and an important story about strength and empowerment, love and loss.
It has remained a circuitous process, but in early 2018 I determined that this is the year I would complete this film. Ready for the world in 2019.
There are real costs I have covered over the years and to finish the film it will cost me a base, in wages and fees, of $30,000.00 (composer, editor, post-sound, rights acquisition, legal, insurance, festival fees etc.).
There are stretch goals beyond the $15,000 I've asked to raise - but it's a great start and further assurance that we're on the right track to completion.
Thank you for being part of getting Candice's story out there.
I think she would be pleased!
Risks and challenges
The risks are small at this point.
It is very important to build a community around this film, to share that this story is important and needs to be told. The more money we have the more polished the film will be, the more stock footage we can include, the more professionals we can bring into the post-process, the more festivals we can apply to...the more people will see it.
The finish line is in sight.
At best, this film can be distributed internationally, screen in festivals and be available on-line.
At worst, it's available on-line, in perpetuity, for those who wish to know her.
