Jack Daniel's is a brand of Tennessee whiskey and the highest selling American whiskey in the world. Each year, millions of barrels of whiskey are produced and sold. As part of the distilling process, the whiskey is aged in oak barrels.
The whiskey is aged in these barrels for 4 years. The used barrels are salvaged, the steel bands are removed, and the staves disassembled. Finally, the staves are cut into over-sized (7/8in. x 7/8in. x 5-1/4in. minimum) pen blanks.
My great grandfather, Stephen Ernest Whidden, was a carpenter. He ran a carpentry shop along with Mr. Decatur and Mr. Smith on the northeast corner of Broad Street and Lincoln Terrace in Peekskill, New York back in the 1920s. My grandfather, Ernest Richard Whidden, built airplanes for a living, but in his spare time he enjoyed carpentry.
Inspired by their legacy, I decided in 2014 to begin learning about woodworking. I purchased a lathe and began to make woodturned projects such as pens, keychains, winestoppers, and bowls.
One of the motivating factors at our woodshop has always been using reclaimed, salvaged, and sustainable wood sources. For the most part, I collect my own wood or purchase it from local salvage companies.
The wood being used to create the rewards for this campaign is from salvaged whiskey barrels once used by the Jack Daniel's Distillery.
Initially, pen making started out as a hobby. It has grown from that and turned into a full time family business. We currently run an online Etsy shop and sell items locally, but that isn't enough to provide for our growing family of 6 (and 2 cats).
Kickstarter allows for global exposure and creates permanent relationships with people who are passionate about what we create and also with potential retail buyers.
Our goal for this campaign is to raise enough funds to fulfill all our rewards, purchase a new lathe and drill press for our shop, and to provide for monthly expenses for our family.
I enjoy creating unique projects with a story. Each of the rewards for this campaign include an authentic piece of American distilling history. Included with each reward is a certificate of authenticity and a story that you can share with your friends.
Remember each item is handcrafted and unique! There may be variances in wood coloring and grain. Your particular keychain or pen may look slightly different than the one in the picture. If you would like more or higher resolution pictures of the rewards, please let me know!

UNLOCKED - Stretch Goal 2: Chocolate Factory Pen Reward
Yellow Pine flooring reclaimed from the now shuttered Schafer's Chocolate Factory in Manayunk, PA. Memories of chocolate dust and machine oil encrust the lumber salvaged by the Philadelphia Salvage Company. Permeating the wood so deeply, it leaves dark butterscotch tones along the grain.
Once located on Krams Avenue in Manayunk, PA and run by local confectioner Harold Schafer until his passing, the Schafer Chocolate factory is providing a different taste of sweetness now.
UNLOCKED! Stretch Goal 2.5: Beer Barrel Pen Reward
White Cedar salvaged from the Ortlieb's Brewery in Northern Liberties before its demolishing in 2007. This reclaimed lumber was once an integral part of the beer making operation; the brew barrel. The lumber was reclaimed by Manayunk Timber to save for making furniture and other pieces of art. Whidden's Woodshop has acquired a small amount of this malty wood and is making it available to you via this Kickstarter campaign!
UNLOCKED! Stretch Goal 3: Lever-Action Pen Reward
The World's Only Lever Action Bullet Click Pen! Cock the Lever to both advance and retract the refill. The sides of the pen are adorned with an antique brass etched deer on one side and the entry slide for the bullet casing on the other! Antique Brass adorns the pen that is artfully etched with designs on both sides of the pen.
These pens will be available in both Whiskey Barrel and Beer Barrel wood.
Risks and challenges
We have set an aggressive schedule for fulfilling rewards for our backers. One of the risks involved with that could be excessive participation causing a larger than expected number of items to create. We will do our best to meet or exceed the expectation of delivery for the rewards.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
