About

What is 5x5?

5x5 is a fine art photography magazine independently curated & published by Jenie Clark & Tamelyn Feinstein.  It is intended as a print gallery, and it began because we are mad crazy about photography, and we wanted to help talented photographers to reach a wider audience and get the recognition they deserve.  Our goal is to shine a giant spotlight on great art and the photographers who create it...and to make it easier for photographers and people who like to look at great art find each other.

You can read more on our website, and we have samples of our first two issues available online, as well.  We are also on Facebook.

This is your third issue; why do you need Kickstarter?

To print Issue 3.  We want to make sure people get their money's worth when they buy a copy of 5x5, and print-on-demand doesn't deliver, so we opted to print it ourselves.  We use offset printing for higher image quality; heavy cover stock; and thick, rich, creamy paper. And the quality shows - we have a great product which is more like a book than a magazine.  But all that quality is expensive, and offset printing requires large minimum orders.  There's also the cost of shipping worldwide.  We are currently ad-free, so there's nothing to help defray the costs of production, shipping and overhead.  Both of us have supported other crowd-funded projects in the past, so we thought the Kickstarter community might want to help us succeed, too.

Why print?  Can't you just go digital?  What's wrong with a PDF?

When it comes to photography, an image on a computer screen or e-reader doesn't have the same impact as a printed image.  There's just no substitute for being able to hold and view an actual photograph, on paper.

Where does my money go?

It pays for printing and shipping. If we actually receive more than we need for Issue 3, those funds will go to pay for printing and shipping Issue 4.

Why should I donate if you've already met your goal?

Because we actually need $7000 to print each issue, and we also lose about 10% of what's donated to Kickstarter & Amazon.  Kickstarter is an all-or-nothing proposition, so we only asked for about half of what we actually need to print the next issue.

What if you don't meet your goal?

If we don't meet our goal, we get nothing. Nada. Nil. Zip. Zero. Zilch. Kickstarter returns your money to you, and we start all over...and Issue 3 will most likely be produced digitally only, which would be a shame for all our wonderful photographers.

What are Gravity Studios & Waterlily Studios?

Tamelyn & Jenie are both photographers.  Tamelyn sells her work at Gravity Studios, as well as tamelyn.com, and Jenie has some shots up at 500px until she finishes building Waterlily Studios (she does all the web work for 5x5 in addition to laying out and managing the magazine, so she's been a little busy).

Who are the photographers in the video?

They're great, aren't they?! There's a complete list on the Kickstart page of our website, but here are their names, in order of appearance (some of them are used more than once):  Sarah Bloom, Megan Horsburgh, James Bruntz, Susan Knight, John Dolan, Libby Livermore, Katelyn Demidow, Lisa Siezcka, Sarah Mercer, Stewart Bremner, Sarah Ann Wright, David Mathis, Susan Sabo (& the Vatos), Angela Ward-Brown, Julie Hunter, Gabi Helfert, Carl Beebee, Steven Miljavac, Tamagna Ghosh, Rachel Nichole, Dave Wood, Joel Robison, Geoff Ridenour and Sophie Ouch.

Whose music is that, and what's the name of the song?

The music is "Whistle While You Wait," by Marian Call. It's from her new album, Something Fierce, and is provided courtesy of Marian (mariancall.com).  You can hear the rest of the album (and we recommend you do!) at Bandcamp.  You can buy it - and the rest of Marian's albums - there, too.

Thank you, Marian!

Risks and challenges

The challenges this project faces are the cost of printing and shipping. All print magazines face a period during which cost of production exceeds revenue. This period is generally 5 years. We have already printed two issues, and our circulation is growing, both via new readers and repeat orders. We work every day to expand our exposure and build recognition; we have begun to attract the attention of industry professionals and are now being approached by agents & PR firms. We feel the potential for growth is right and that given time, we can turn 5x5 into a self-sustaining and reputable publication. We know our market and our medium, and are dedicated to working night and day to turn 5x5 into a first-rate international publication.
