About

We are Boost. We design breast forms for women who have had breast cancer surgery. A breast form is an object worn inside the bra to create the shape of a breast under clothing. Our Feel Good Breast Forms differ from a breast prosthesis in that they are lightweight, colourful and breathable.

One in eight women will get a breast cancer diagnosis in their lifetime. After full mastectomy (breast removal surgery), if women wish to restore the shape of a breast under clothing, they can opt for reconstructive surgery or wear a breast prosthesis. These prostheses are usually beige, heavy and made of a dense silicone gel (think 'chicken fillet') .

Silicone gel prostheses. After 2-3 years of wear they will split.
Silicone gel prostheses. After 2-3 years of wear they will split.

Women who wear a prosthesis tell us that prostheses are too heavy, hot and sweaty. They move around when the wearer is active, they can fall forward - leaving a gap between the chest wall and the back of the product; they split after 2-3 years of wear, and replacing them is either time-consuming or expensive.

A different prosthesis is required for swimming, and a lightweight breast form is advisable for exercise or sleeping; so you can imagine how the costs add up - especially if you’ve had both breasts removed!

Add to this, if you are a person of colour, you have very limited choice. In fact, we are yet to meet anyone who identifies the beige colour of a silicone gel prosthesis as their own.

Most breast prostheses are beige. We don't think anyone is beige.

Women have been making do for decades; it’s time to stop making do and start making better.

People who wear a prosthesis are demanding more. There are plenty of options for self-expression and style if people want a customised limb or hand prosthesis, but no-one has provided the same for a breast prosthesis...until now.

Our Feel Good Breast Forms do not imitate skin tones and use the celebratory and expressive qualities of colour to provide more choice to women.

The Boost Feel Good Breast Form will address the limitations of existing products and bring a colourful, affordable, accessible, comfortable and beautiful product to market. Created in soft, skin-safe, durable silicone, our breast forms are easy to clean and suitable for regular and active wear.

Curious? Read what some of our product prototype testers had to say:

“It is much lighter than my usual prosthesis and very comfortable.” - Ruth

“I liked how quick and easy it was to wash and dry” – Hazel

“The Boost breast form looks amazing and feels comfortable to wear” – Katie

“I loved the form and if I didn’t have to return it I would still be wearing it” – Hazel

“I loved the design and the colour, not pretending to be a boob but a beautiful addition to your body.” - Katie

"I would be delighted to recommend the Boost breast form that I have been trialling for some weeks.

The form is light and breathable, as opposed to the traditional breast forms I have tried - imagine wearing a lump of gelatinous silicone in your bra for a few hours - hot and sticky is not a pleasant experience.

The form fits easily into a pocketed post-surgery bra, and is very easy and quick to wash.

The same form can be used in swimwear, saving the wearer additional expense (the traditional form is generally too heavy).

When not being worn, the breast form resembles an artwork, and if seen by others I doubt they would know what it was!! (handy if you have inquisitive children!)" - Bridget

Boost Innovations was formed when Rosie Brave - passionate about wellbeing, customisation and colour psychology - responded to Sam Jackman’s account of her mother’s experiences with breast cancer and wearing a prosthesis.

Driven to make things better for Sam’s mum and other women who have had breast cancer, Rosie and Sam formed Boost Innovations, using co-design (designing with others) to ensure their products meet the needs of the people using them. Boost is challenging assumptions about why things are the way they are and working with a community of people to bring about positive change.

"Boost's human-centred, co-design approach is baked into everything they do. They recognise that they're in business to improve the lives of their customers...understanding what their customers really need and working with them to create the most desirable and commercially viable solutions." - Ben Griffin, Innovate UK

The idea for the Feel Good Breast Form has been evolving for around five years, and Boost has been a registered company for one year. We have had support from Design Council to create initial prototypes of our product and tooling (moulds), create a logo, register trademarks and build a basic website.

Innovate UK recently funded us to run a project reaching out to women who had had a lumpectomy and explore what their needs are, and support from The Big Issue Invest and a small regional manufacturing grant have enabled us to reach our current stage of product development.

So far, we have filed a patent application for our design, prototyped the breast form in three sizes and tested it in one size with several women. We have a production-ready design in two sizes and are ready to implement production once the funding is in place. Needless to say, our ambition for this product far outstrips our current means to deliver it and that’s why we need your help now.

Your support will help us to finesse our tooling, expand the number of sizes available, develop a range of colour options, set up a production line, formalise our quality processes and develop a Gift-A-Breast-Form bursary scheme.

Risks and challenges

Sam and Rosie have a background in project coordination/management and have both managed extensive budgets. We have planned and budgeted this project efficiently; even so we do realise it is possible that in production unexpected costs or delays will arise. Whether this means we need to source additional funding or the production timeline is delayed, we will keep you updated. We respect your time and money and will keep you completely in the loop.

True, we've never manufactured products before, though we have organised some big things in our time - so we are learning as we go. But we already have good relationships with product designers, suppliers and industry experts and are confident we can get the support we need to deliver this product.

We are a micro-business; we are juggling producing this product with other work and family commitments. However, we've invested a lot of unpaid time, love and money into seeing this project succeed so far, and like you, we (and our long-suffering families!) can't wait to get a Feel Good Breast Form in the hands of people who need them.

As with every first instance of something, there will always be tweaks and improvements that can be made. We invite you to be part of shaping how our product develops over time by pledging for, wearing and feeding back on our first breast form. Be part of our story and let us be part of yours.

Long-lasting design

The Boost Feel Good Breast Form is not structured in the traditional manner of a breast prosthesis. The established construction is a ‘chicken fillet’ type product that encases a sticky silicone gel inside a thin polyurethane film. When the film splits, the product becomes unusable. Our design has re-imagined the structure of the breast form, and removed the need for the silicone gel material. Not only does this eliminate the risk of leakage as there is no gel to leak! but it also produces longevity in retaining shape and structure. Boost breast forms are created from a robust silicone which we expect to last at least twice as long as the current silicone gel prosthesis.

Reusability and recyclability

Boost has the ambition to create an end of life process for the Boost Feel Good Breast Form, once we are able to start production. We have researched carefully the areas of production where waste could be minimised and we will collect all discarded waste silicone to be chipped for re-purposing into alternative silicone products. Our long term aim will be to offer our customers the opportunity to return any well-used breast forms for re-purposing (although, as mentioned above, we expect our products will have significant longevity!). The cycle of our products is extremely important to us, and our processes will develop and evolve once our batch production is up and running.

Sustainable materials

Silicone is not recyclable. However, by designing the breast form using an open structure, we have minimised the amount of silicone it takes to create each breast form, and created a lighter, cooler and more comfortable product for our wearers. As our breast form's structure holds its shape, it does not need to be held in a moulded plastic case, unlike the traditional gel-filled prosthesis which must be stored in this way in order to retain its shape when not in use. We plan to ship our breast forms will be sent to customers in ethically sourced, natural fibre bags, which not only eliminates the plastic packaging but also provides a useful, easy to clean storage solution. The durability of our silicone and our longterm ambition to re-purpose waste and product returns makes our product more sustainable than current market alternatives.

Environmentally friendly factories

Boost is a people-before-profit business. We could outsource production to China to save money, but we strongly believe in producing our product in the United Kingdom where we can keep a close eye on production quality, work environments and worker welfare, as well as ensuring environmental impacts of transportation are low. We will be creating work for UK citizens and supporting UK businesses.

Boost is a small business based in rural Cornwall, with a commitment to environmentally friendly production. At the moment, our fundraising is driven out of our desire to create our own batch production processes and create our products in Cornwall with collaboration from local suppliers and silicone specialists. Boost has completed the R&D of our breast form with partners and manufacturing advisors within a 15 mile radius of Boost HQ, working with partners that share our passion for the environment and the Cornish countryside and ethical economy. Minimising the travel requirements, delivery of equipment (like moulds) and feeding into our local economy are important to us. Funds raised through Kickstarter will support us to maintain this ethos, working on in-house batch production and putting women’s needs and feedback at the heart of our business. As we grow, we will be aiming to develop these partnerships further, investing in UK manufacture and supporting job creation in local communities. We have always chosen partners with integrity and shared values, and we will continue to do so.

Sustainable fulfillment and distribution

We plan to produce our product in small batches, making to order. We will not over-produce and hold inventory that may ultimately end up in landfill. Doing away with the need for all the plastic inserts and nylon packaging means that we can ship our orders in a much more environmentally-friendly way. Our natural fibre bags will provide a lasting, easy clean storage solution that are created from ethically sourced fabrics. Packaging for shipping will be in lightweight recyclable/reusable cardboard boxes.

Something else

People are vital to the running of a business, and Boost recognises that sustainability is about supporting our local economy and the wellbeing of our future staff, as well as environmental concerns. We have ambitious longterm plans to develop a customer service offer that secures employment for people who might have had barriers to accessing work, particularly those who have had longterm health conditions. We are committed to wellbeing in all elements of our business.
