It's time to put the Unit 44 graphic novel into comic book shops worldwide!
The Great Gatsby. The Catcher in the Rye. War and Peace. These are just a couple of great works of literature that Unit 44 has NOT been compared to.
Instead of deep, flowery, and thought-provoking prose, Unit 44 offers readers a frenetically-paced, ridiculous and over-the-top laugh-fest.
Inept Area 51 employees forget to pay the rent of the facility's off-site storage unit, leaving the secret contents to be sold to a pair of rednecks at public auction.
When an alien invasion threatens earth, the agents must recover an item from the locker if they hope to stop the extraterrestrial threat.
Unit 44 is an 88-page science-fiction/humor comic book written by Wes Locher (writer of Hipster Vs. Rednecks, The Undoubtables, Chambers) and illustrated by Ed Jiménez (artist of Backfired, Secrets and Shadows).
Wes originally started the project because he thought it would be a silly and ridiculous idea to explore. Then drawing the comic made Ed laugh. And then it turned out that other people also thought it was funny. Now we hope to reach an even wider audience and leave them in stitches (the good kind).
While we originally exposed ourselves to the world in 2015 (that didn't sound good, did it?) when the 4-issue series was released digitally. The graphic novel will collect all four issues into one 100+ page book, allowing us to expose ourselves to a new and wider audience (that still sounds bad).
This Kickstarter campaign will fund the printing of 750 copies of the graphic novel to be made available to comic shops, book stores and libraries worldwide via our publisher, Alterna Comics.
Let's look at that last part again... comic book shops WORLDWIDE.
We get it. Humor is subjective. For instance, some people think Larry the Cable Guy is funny, but they're wrong. Here are the first five pages of the comic to see if it tickles your funny bone.
As long as you enjoy laughing, then yes! But if you're nervous, here are some nice things that comic book reviewers have said about Unit 44:
“Unit 44 contains some of the wittiest dialogue this side of Joss Whedon.” - Ian Simpson / geeksyndicate.co.uk
“…a hilarious roller coaster ride.” - Sean Bartley / ComicsVerse.com
“…good fun, an easy, smart read, and a huge surprise.” - Andrew Hales / ThereforeIGeek.com
“…sets a tone that would allow Unit 44 to easily fit in on either Nickelodeon or a Hulu exclusive animated line-up.” - Joe Iconic / ComicsOnline.com
“… a fun sci-fi comedy, big on the goofy gags and conspiracy theory silliness.” - Geek-O-Rama reviews
“Unit 44 reminds me of the witty and charming cartoons I grew up with in the 90s ... Locher and Jiménez make a great creative team.” - Laura Hong / cc2konline.com
“…a blend of Men In Black and X-Files.” - 13th Crusader / ComicCrusaders.com
“[Unit 44] had me in stitches by the third page.” - Small Press Comics Review
Even if you've already read the series digitally, the Unit 44 graphic novel will (look great on your bookshelf and) be loaded with NEW CONTENT including a never-before-seen 4-page short comic called "Memory Lapse" and pin-up art by some of our extremely talented artist friends including Donal Delay (Image Comics' upcoming Death of Love), Stan Chou (Double Take Studios' Medic, First Law of Mad Science), Jayson Kretzer (Wannabe Heroes), Loch Ness, Graeham Jarvis and more.
But we also have a smattering of other stuff you might be into, including a PDF download of the Unit 44 graphic novel, an exclusive print, a themed tote bag and more! You could even "hire" Wes to read and provide feedback on your story, or commission series artist Ed to draw your favorite fictional character, a comic book cover, or have him design something completely original!
Unsure if you want to support the project? For a pledge of $1 we'll email you a digital copy of Unit 44 issue #1 within 24 hours. You can check it out and decide if you want the whole story!
Thanks so much for giving Unit 44 a look! We appreciate the consideration and support.
