About this project
What is Rackless?
Rackless is an incredibly simple magnetic key rack that effortlessly suspends up to 150 keys in mid air. We’ve carefully balanced form and function with advanced woodworking techniques to create a modern key rack built to last a lifetime, guaranteed. And every single key rack is crafted by hand from solid American hardwood in our Chicago wood shop.
Why a key rack?
There are these things called keystone habits, that everyone has, but may not be aware of. They’re typically very simple – like what time we go to bed, but their trickle-down effect can have pretty dramatic implications on our daily routine. Where we put our keys is one of these habits.
The simple act of putting our belongings in a consistent place let’s us leave home on our own schedule, setting us up for the best day possible. Our lives are busy enough, frantically trying to find our keys, wallet or phone as the grid lock thickens is no ones idea of a great morning and that’s why we created Rackless.
Owning a Well Made product is an investment we want you to make with confidence, so before we get into features, let's talk about this Lifetime Guarantee. If at any time, for any reason, your key rack breaks, splits or ceases to function due to material defect or a flaw in the craftsmanship we provided, Well Made will happily replace it for as long as we stay in business.
Rackless comes in three sizes – 8", 10" and 12", but no matter the size, we needed a key rack even a Janitor could love. We use incredibly strong neodymium rare-earth magnets in every Rackless key rack. The 12" model holds a whopping 30+ keys per key ring on each of the 5 magnets hidden invisibly inside a solid slab of American hardwood. That's over 150 keys! See the chart below for the specifics of each model.
It's no secret that magnets can damage sensitive items, but we've designed around this. Our 12" model uses the strongest magnets of the Rackless family. To combat against this we insert a solid steel core, deflecting the magnetic properties downwards. The magnets in our 8" and 10" models are exposed and come in direct contact with your key rings. This allows them be lower in strength, so no steel core is needed.
Bottom line, Rackless was designed to keep things like Smart Phones, key fobs, and even wallets placed on the shelf above out of harm's way. For a more detailed explanation, please see the FAQ at the bottom of the page.
Installing Rackless is simple and uses just two screws to mount a small bracket to the wall. Those two screw heads are attracted to more magnets inside a slot in the key rack, automatically pulling the key rack securely into place, leaving no visible hardware. It's a lot more effort, but a feature that makes installation significantly easier.
Rackless is more than a key rack, it's also rock solid shelf. Coming in 8", 10" and 12" widths, each Rackless is 3.25" deep and 1" thick. The 7° upward angle holds 5 lbs. or more without breaking a sweat.
The Rackless key rack comes in three different widths in either solid Oak or solid Walnut. Each size receives higher strength magnets and more of them.
The world is moving faster and faster every day, but that doesn't mean we have to also. We all seek moments where we allow ourselves to slow down, most often in our own home. Well Made products are designed to celebrate these moments.
Rackless was designed to make your life better by shifting a small habit that can have a big impact, here's a look inside.
At Well Made, we keep our products affordable by simplifying the design, not making compromises on materials or manufacturing. Kickstarter allows us to pass additional savings along to you because we're eliminating the middle man. Which is why every Rackless will cost less here on Kickstarter than anywhere else, ever.
Well Made is proud to handle all manufacturing and fulfillment at our Chicago facility. This project requires nearly two dozen steps, ranging from very basic to highly-skilled, all of which we have been refining for well over a year now. Here's a little peak behind the curtain at what it takes to make each Rackless key rack.
Last year, we launched Well Made here on Kickstarter with our first product, the STiiCKs magnetic frame. We hosted, manufactured and shipped 100% of rewards to everyone who supplied shipping information in just 6 weeks. A feat nearly unheard of here on Kickstarter – Rackless will be no different.
Our studio is set up to manufacture about 1,000 units per month. Depending on the success of the campaign, we will have a rolling delivery schedule based on when a Backer pledges to the project. We are confident that the first rewards will be in the mail in less two weeks from the time our campaign ends.
A Well Made product is an American Made product, but there is a reason the vast majority of manufacturing has moved overseas – labor, and often materials, are much, much cheaper. Notice we didn't say "less expensive". Cheap is a quality statement, not a cost statement. We're tired of our things falling apart and we go to considerable lengths to bring you products designed and built to last a lifetime. And we do so with a transparency that lets you feel good about knowing how and where they are made.
We set ourselves apart by making unique products of incredibly high quality, but even that’s not enough. In order to remain competitive, we need to be more efficient than ever.
By backing this project, you are directly responsible for helping us hire a skilled local workforce and investing in larger, more efficient machinery that allows us to do all of our manufacturing in-house.
Brandon Knowlden is an ad guy turned wood worker. Claiming that his only two skills are curiosity and resourcefulness, he spent a decade cutting his teeth in the Advertising industry working on brands like Porsche, Corona and Panera Bread. He founded Well Made on the belief that the things we buy should last.
Dylan Shipley is an expert fabricator and product designer. Dylan sets himself apart by not cutting corners and dreaming up ideas for products that are intelligent, considerate and timeless by design. Dylan was the wizard behind the curtain for our first product launch, STiiCKs.
John Purdy is a photographer, drone pilot and resident shop dog over at Well Made. He helps make sure things run smoothly and handles fabrication on a day to day basis. His photography and video skills can be seen for a variety of clients all over Chicago.
Risks and challenges
While there are some potential speed bumps associated with this project, we do not see any major risks or challenges as we have done this before. In fact, our last campaign was hosted, manufactured and 100% of rewards were shipped to everyone who supplied shipping information in about a month and a half.
We have been refining this concept for over a year now and currently own all the machinery necessary to fabricate each and every reward. Our supply chain, our skill set and our commitment to creating heirloom-quality products has been proven and we look forward to another successful project.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
