Welcome to the Moon

Historien kort fortalt

Welcome to the Moon

Welcome to Danish independent filmmaking that kicks ass!

After several years of developing the idea and story, we are now ready to present a script that paves the way for innovation. A team of passionate filmmakers from Denmark, dressed in winter boots and warm clothing, will be ready to deliver “Welcome to the Moon” on the Danish island, Møn, in March – a film that has been denied financial support by the Danish Film Institute.

We need your help! Do you like the terrible, the embarrassing, the unconventional; that which bursts boundaries for normal behavior, and that which through horror and laughter somehow ends up in beauty and redemption – then this is your chance to show your support!

Autofiction

This project emerged as an idea between the director, Aske Bang, and the actor, Stanislav Sevcik. They wanted to create a story of friendship, where they play themselves in the leading roles, using elements from their own lives such as their emotional connections. The film dictionary defines this tool as autoficiton. The two quickly became aware of the extra layer of supernaturalism that this tool could create: a far scarier and deeper level in the horror genre. Thereby, the film explores boundaries within the form of the narrative which creates renewed excitement and constantly challenges the viewer.

Talent and hard work pays off

By the Danish film magazine, Ekko, Aske Bang has been rewarded the title, King of the Ekko Shortlist (the top 10 list of Best Danish Shorts).

Aske Bang is the sole film director to have five film presented on this prestigious list of shorts. His films, The Stranger and Ladyboy, is amongst the ten best “All Time” short films out of 857 film.

After graduating as director from The National Film School of Denmark, Aske Bang made the short film Silent Nights which was nominated for an Oscar and received the Danish film prize, the Robert Award, for Best Short Film of the Year.

Now, it’s time for Aske Bang’s debut as a feature film director, starting with “Welcome to the Moon”!

A short brief of the story

Bo (29), the successful film director spends his weekend in a holiday home on the Danish island, Møn, as he’s attending the bachelor party of his friend, the failed actor, Martin (48). Martin has very few friends, hence he’s arranged the party himself. Yet, Bo is surprised to be the only one attending the party as Martin’s second friend has cancelled.

Martin has been looking forward to Bo’s visit, as he has been promised a major role in Bo’s next feature film. However, Bo hasn’t told Martin that the role has been passed on to a well-known actor, demanded by the film’s producer, Peter Aalbæk. And in fear of ruining the party, Bo decides not to tell Martin.

Bo’s girlfriend has moved to Cape Town for half a year which has triggered Bo’s jealousy. And for every FaceTime call, his jealousy grows bigger. Martin’s upcoming wedding will not be the most romantic, because the wedding has more to do with inheritance rather than emotions. Further on Martin admits that his and his fiancée’s sex life stopped a couple of years ago.

Both Bo and Martin love their partners – nevertheless, the bachelor party centers weed, Absinth and, without them truly understanding the situation, local women. A choice they regret the next day, when the newly purchased wedding rings worth 30.000 DKK, are missing. Fortunately, Bo has filmed the night’s excesses but, when viewing, the men are shocked to discover that the women don’t appear in the video.

The wedding rings must be found, and the women must be the thieves. But were the women even there? Or were Bo and Martin hallucinating?

In their search for the rings, the two friends are led to the abandoned hotel, Hotel Island of the King, which has been empty for 15 years. However, the abandoned hotel is not as deserted as first perceived, and the visit leaves them in a state of fear and horror.

It’s winter and off season. We’re in the outskirts of Denmark where beer and spirits are brewed locally; where unemployment and vandalism rules; and where people of disabilities are not hidden away in institutions. The clash between a small-town community and the big city minds have catastrophic consequences.

On top of that, a woman has been reported missing. A woman whom Bo picked up in his car on his way to Møn. Bo and Martin are dragged into the this mystery, which leaves them as nervous wrecks. But – for every challenge that they encounter, their friendship grows deeper and stronger, to a point where they share vulnerability and honesty.

The director’s own words

My ambition is to create an intense and powerful friendship drama. It’s based on a very unusual bachelor’s party that ends up completely wrong in the unnerving way.

“Welcome to the Moon“ is a hybrid film – a mix of drama, comedy and horror. It’s Sideways meets The Shining. The red wine has been substituted with Absinth; the Californian wine fields has been switched out with the eerie Danish Ulvshale forest, and the scary hotel in the mountains has been replaced with an isolated summer cottage on Møn.

Jealousy, greed, shame, fear, anxiety and powerlessness – these are some of the dramatic ingredients that motivates and pushes the narrative.

Also, I desire to explore the male being in the film – both his ugly and beautiful features with emphasis on the emotional characteristics. Therefore, it will be a film portraying the male being’s different approaches to sex, erotica and love.

As an actor, it was clear to me that I’d play one of the leading roles and Stanislav Sevcik the other. The fact that we’re friends in real life authenticates the characters’ relation and improves the credibility of the two individual characters. The chemistry will provide a representational gist to the film which strengthens the drama between the two friends. I know, it might seem rather unusual and a bit daring to place myself in the lead role of my own film debut, but I love taking chances and it excites me to challenge myself. I truly believe that if you ought to create something original and extraordinary, you must find your courage and walk out the plank.

In terms of storytelling, I’m inspired by the narrative the bachelor party comedy-series, Hangover; the creepy horror effects in Paranormal Activity; and by the themes of isolation, loneliness and paranoia in Lars Von Trier’s Antichrist.

The process of creating this story has been hugely pleasurable which I believe will come to show in the result and make this film original and entertaining for an audience.

Consequently, it is very important for me to create a debut film that leaves the audience amazed. If I succeed to make people jump from their seat, to hide their eyes from the horror, to laugh their hearts out and maybe even shed a tear, I’ll say I’ve reached my goal.

“Welcome To The Moon” is going to be a utterly crazy film in so many ways. Without a doubt, it is the most experimenting and personal film that I’ve worked on so far.

Where does the money go?

“Welcome to the Moon” is a low budget film, created by passion, spite and necessity. We already have some money, but we’re still missing a great amount. Therefore, all donations will be highly appreciated!

We will spend the money on transportation of our actors and crew to and from our locations on Møn, on rent of equipment, and on production design (i.e. purchasing props and materials).
