Hi friends, Marq Evans here. I directed the award-winning documentary The Glamour & The Squalor which was released last year. While finishing the film, I began looking for my next project and came across a fascinating article about the 'Father of Claymation,' Will Vinton. Nostalgia immediately took hold and great memories of Vinton's characters and shows from my childhood came rushing back. Will created some of the most memorable characters of my youth, and I knew right away I had to make this film.
Will turned a creative company he started out of his basement into a $35 million+ organization, employing thousands of talented artists along the way; many of these artists went on to create their own shows and studios. He created such iconic characters as the California Raisins, the Domino's Pizza Noid, Red and Yellow M&M's, and the dinosaurs Herb and Rex, just to name a few. An Oscar award-winner, Will is a true pioneer of stop motion animation. The characters he dreamt up in his lifetime of work have sparked cultural phenomenons and continue to resonate with audiences today.
Will has granted us exclusive access to make this, the first feature film on his life. His story goes much deeper than what has ever been told before, and we're honored to be making the film. We've already interviewed Will several times, in addition to many other subjects including:
Will Vinton | Craig Bartlett | Jerry Beck | Kyle Bell | David Bleiman Ichioka | Webster Colcord | David Daniels | Spike Decker | Chuck Duke | Bill Feisterman | Mary Folberg | Joan Gratz | Hal Hickel | Peter Lord | Kevin MacLean | Melissa Mitchell | Lindley Morton | Chris Ohlgren | Bill Plympton | John Ripper | Mary Sandell | Billy Scream | Susan Shadburne | Terry Thoren | Tom Turpin | Mike Wellins | Chel White | Marilyn Zornado | Plus other very exciting interviews confirmed and in the works!
We still have a ton of filming left to go, which is why we are turning to Kickstarter. The documentary will include in-depth conversations with Will and other subjects, exclusive behind the scenes and archive footage, creative reenactments and original Claymation scenes with new characters (representing Will's left and right brain) weaved throughout the film!
We have captured over 15 hours of interview footage with Will, conducted over 25 interviews with other subjects, collected hours and hours of behind the scenes and archive footage, and created a full outline of the film of which we're really proud. The story is surprising and entertaining, and we can't wait to share it with the world! But we need your help.
We have about fifteen additional interviews lined up, and those interviews will be the priority once this Kickstarter is successful. After conducting the remaining interviews, we'll revise our outline of the film to reflect the new material and edit a first cut. This edit will be set to temporary music and consist of the interviews and archive footage to anchor the narrative of the story, storyboards for the original claymation, and placeholders for the footage yet to be shot. We'll then simultaneously begin production of the reenactments and claymation scenes and edit them into the film. From there, we'll edit the heck out of the film until it's worthy and ready for us all!
We are offering some amazing and exclusive rewards through this campaign, including the film itself, official posters and shirts, autographed photos, mustache wax, a private dinner at Will's house in Portland, a Claymation figure of yourself and/or loved ones, and even an opportunity for the figure to be included in the movie!
We have put together a terrific team of sculptors to create a Claymation-style figure of yourself or loved ones. The figures will come standing up in a glass enclosure for prestine exposure on your mantel. ***If you'd like to see your figure animated and included in the film, simply increase your pledge by $250!

We heard from a handful of you that would like the DVD available as a standalone option rather than only included in the $100 bundle. We are happy to now offer the DVD and "Thank You" in the closing credits at the $30 level!
***NEW REWARD ALERT (10.25.17)!
We are so excited to work with you to make this campaign as successful as possible. Please join me and the entire team in helping to make this project a reality.

Risks and challenges
This is an experienced documentary team and we will get the film finished and into the world. The goal we have set for Kickstarter, however, will not alone allow us to complete the film. We have set this goal in a true effort to help "kickstart" the project from where we are currently. It will allow us to finish the interviews and complete a first edit (and fulfill the rewards), but we would still be short of funds to complete full production and create the original claymation characters and scenes. We intend to fundraise through alternative methods to complete the film (including potentially a 2nd Kickstarter); however, we are also hopeful we can exceed our stated goal here during this campaign. If we're fortunate enough to reach our goal, we'll announce a stretch goal strategy to raise funds for completion of the film.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
