Pick up sword and spell and toss the dice, OLD SCHOOL STYLE!
Take heed and harken back to the days of high adventure, when a Game Master could sit down with an engaging prefab module, guiding parties through scenarios of danger, darkness, and the promise of hidden treasure. The stories experienced by the players and Game Masters within that shared framework became their own, with thrilling heroics and comedic failings cementing moments into memories.
Those days can be yours again with Cut to the Chase Games’ FANTASY RENAISSANCE line of game adventure modules! Each module is a PDF and print release that forms one part of a series filling hours of game play. Play through an entire series or mix and match to suit your lust for adventure!
The first Kickstarter campaign saw the release of the WRATH OF THE KOBOLDS trilogy, which you can still pick up through DriveThruRPG. Now we’ve got a new series of adventure modules to satiate your thirst for adventure and glory!
What’s This Kickstarter For?
This campaign is to pay for the art, writing, editing, and printing of the next series in the FANTASY RENAISSANCE Adventure Module series, TG MEMORIES OF THE TOAD GOD. The modules funded with this Kickstarter are as follows:
TG1 Lost Temple of Ibholtheg – low level scenario (5E/Swords & Wizardry/Castles & Crusades levels 3-5, DCC RPG 2nd/3rd, Savage Worlds Novice/Seasoned)
TG2 Tongues of the Screaming Toad – low level scenario (5E/Swords & Wizardry/Castles & Crusades levels 4-6, DCC RPG 3rd, Savage Worlds Seasoned)
TG3 Shadow Out of Sapphire Lake – low level scenario (5E/Swords & Wizardry/Castles & Crusades levels 4-6, DCC RPG 3rd, Savage Worlds Seasoned)
Also, as a special treat and thank you, you’ll get the module KS2 Crypt of Bones! It’s a higher level dungeon crawl (levels 10-12) in the grand tradition of dangerous trap-laden rooms guarding great treasure. It comes to you in an exclusive KICKSTARTER logo and series, and WON’T BE AVAILABLE IN THIS FORMAT AFTER THE CAMPAIGN IS OVER! It is a follow-up to BF1 Tower of Skulls, available now, but the KS series of modules have different colors and won’t be sold as part of the KS series EVER! A copy of KS2 is included with all pledges receiving TG1-3 (EXPERT and higher) in PDF or physical form as appropriate to the pledge level.
This next series of adventure modules takes a party of stalwart adventurers to the edge of civilization itself. Beyond the imposing Fell Mountains sits the Great Jungle, lush and full of dangers and treasure from a long lost civilization. The frontier outpost of Kraden’s Hill has become a hotbed of activity and many merchants are willing to pay handsomely for the unearthed riches of the inhospitable jungle.
TG0 Depths of the Croaking Grotto – A missing box of treasure sends the characters on the last caravan of the season bound for the frontier outpost of Kraden’s Hill. Tracking the culprits turns into a dangerous journey into the rough untamed mountains, where predators and monsters lurk in the shadows of craggy peaks. Can a brave band of heroes recover the missing treasure and return from the DEPTHS OF THE CROAKING GROTTO? Available as a Pay What You Want title RIGHT NOW!
TG1 Lost Temple of Ibholtheg – On the borders of the uncivilized Great Jungle lies the outpost of Kraden’s Hill. Brave adventurers are needed to lead expeditions into the perilous jungle, facing cannibal monsters, dangerous flora, and worse, all in search of wealth and power hidden deep inside the jungle. Find this and more in the LOST TEMPLE OF IBHOLTHEG!
TG2 Tongues of the Screaming Toad – The frontier outpost of Kraden’s Hill has been having problems lately with people going insane. Signs point to long dead religious rites honoring a horrendous god of the ancient jungle. Can a brave band of adventurers face the utter horror of the TONGUES OF THE SCREAMING TOAD?
TG3 Shadow Out of Sapphire Lake – Tranquil Sapphire Lake, located a short distance from the outpost of Kraden’s Hill, has long been a source of fresh and clean water for the frontier community. One night, however, transforms the site into a horror beyond nightmares and out of time as the people face the SHADOW OUT OF SAPPHIRE LAKE!
KS2 Crypt of Bones – Terrible monstrosities crawl up from the dirt around the remote town of Amberdale! The ancient graveyard that sits outside the town has become host to a force of darkness under the touch of the Demon Lord of Graveyards, and no one is safe from the return of the Eyes of Death! Can you protect Amberdale and put an end to the evil in the CRYPT OF BONES?
Below you’ll see the completed art for TG1 Lost Temple of Ibholtheg! Cover by Matt Morrow, interior art by Johnathan Bingham, and cartography by Glynn Seal.
What game system is this for?
There are so many great fantasy RPGs on the market now it’s hard to choose, and even harder to find support for some of them. The FANTASY RENAISSANCE Adventure Modules support six of the best fantasy RPGs that cater to old school gaming enjoyment – 5th Edition of the First Fantasy RPG, Swords & Wizardry, Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG, Castles & Crusades, Pathfinder, and Savage Worlds. Each supported game system has its own version of the module with rules and statistic references appropriate to that game.
What’s in the modules?
Each FANTASY RENAISSANCE Adventure Module is going to be about 32 pages (some a bit longer, some a bit shorter), with a full color art piece on the cover and smaller black and white illustrations inside. Maps are going to be provided where necessary to facilitate both “theater of the mind” style play and miniatures, and handouts available where appropriate. Stylistically, you may recognize the fonts used and the formatting of the cover as hearkening back to the old 1st Edition modules of yore.
Who are you?
I’m “Weird Dave” Coulson and I’ve been running and playing roleplaying games for over 20 years now. I started out with AD&D 2nd Edition, and then moved on from there to other systems and editions, but I’ve always held a love of those early modules (that I’ve had to hunt and peck all these years to collect!). That love has translated into my published works, including Dungeon Magazine, Knights of the Dinner Table Magazine, Gygax Magazine, and many entries in Reality Blurs’ Old School Fantasy series for Savage Worlds and Fantasy Craft. I’ve written for the Adventurers League, the organized play arm for the fifth edition of Dungeons & Dragons as well. The first Kickstarter campaign to fund the WRATH OF THE KOBOLDS series finished with nearly $7,000 raised!
What’s the status of the project?
The first module (TG1 Lost Temple of Ibholtheg) is completely done and ready to go for all supported systems – I just need to get the final backer list before sending it out to everyone that gets a PDF. The other two in the TG series are written and ready to move forward with editing, art, and layout. KS2 Crypt of Bones is undergoing final playtesting and revisions, though art orders will be going out for that along with the other modules in the series.
When would I get my delivery?
Currently, if you pledge at the $15 or higher level you will get the first PDF as soon as the payments are processed through Kickstarter and the data is returned to me (so I can make sure the backer credits are done properly). It’s done and ready to be sent to you! The other three are awaiting editing, final art, and layout, so the PDFs for those should be delivered as soon as they are available (around January 2017). The print orders would be going out around February 2017.
How would I get my delivery?
I'll be using DriveThruRPG for digital fulfillment of the PDFs. They're the best in the business! Physical orders will be sent out when all products are completed in one package (USPS for domestic orders, variable for international).
I love gaming conventions! They’re a fantastic way to meet new people and play new games, and I’d love to see any of you at one of the upcoming cons! At this point I’m planning on attending the following conventions and running games.
• Gamehole Con IV, Madison, WI, November 4th through the 6th. I’ll be running short slots (2 hours) for the third part in a new adventure, Lost Vault of the Frost Giant God. I’ve got a fantastic setup for it as well, if you’re going to be at Gamehole Con you won’t want to miss out!
• Con of the North 2017, Minneapolis, MN, February 17th through the 19th. I’ll be running 2 hour blocks of Lost Vault of the Frost Giant God and Crypt of Bones in 4 hour blocks consisting of the second and third parts of the module (a haunted graveyard and undead-filled catacombs beneath!).
• GaryCon IX, Lake Geneva, WI, March 23rd through March 26th. I’ll be running Crypt of Bones in 4 hour blocks throughout the con in a fantastic graveyard miniature setup!
I’m hoping to attend Origins or GenCon next year as well but my schedule is still a bit up in the air for the big summer cons. I hope to see some of you in the coming months!
What about stretch goals?
There are many things to fund if we exceed the Kickstarter goal of $6,000!
At $7,000, everyone getting a physical shipment is going to receive a set of 3 free d6s with their order, with the Cut to the Chase Games logo for the “6” side! FOR FREE! These are going to be green to make them distinct from the set from the previous Kickstarter.
At $10,000, everyone getting a physical shipment is going to get a printed copy of a mystery module! FOR FREE! What's it going to be? Probably a special KS0 module that I've been tinkering with. Let's see!
Beyond that ... ? Let’s find out together!

The process will become more formal through BackerKit after the campaign is over, but for now all that you have to do is increase your pledge by the listed amount if you want the add on. All add-ons will ship together with the Kickstarter orders (so you get a discount on the WK modules but have to wait to get them).
What are these modules going to cost after the funding?
Assuming the campaign hits the funding goal we’re going to release the modules for PDF sales at a cost of $4.99 each and for print at $12.00 each.
What setting are these modules going to be set in?
I’ve intentionally left as much about the modules’ setting vague or blank so that they can be easily dropped into your campaign. Some of the higher level ones get a bit tricky for this but I still firmly believe that they can be integrated into nearly any fantasy campaign with a minimal of work on your part. Each module includes suggestions on where to place it within your campaign setting, describing the landscape and histories otherwise suggested by the adventure.
Who is going to be doing the art?
I’m happy to be working with some fantastic artists to complete the art and maps for the modules.
The cover art is being done by Matt Morrow. Check out his portfolio of work here. Interior illustrations are going to be done by talented Johnathan Bingham who’s done a lot of work for old school products recently. You can find and follow his work here.
The maps are being done by Glynn Seal of MonkeyBlood Design. His work captures the feel of those old school modules so well I had to work with him. He’s done a lot of other projects as well. Check his other work out here.
Risks and challenges
The modules are written and have been playtested, though KS2 Crypt of Bones is undergoing some more revisions to tighten it up and make it compatible for convention play. I've got a solid team of artists that have a proven track record of delivering their contracts early or on time, but sometimes life happens. It happened for me during the last Kickstarter - I got married! I strive to keep the backers up to date of all progress as we continue.
