Take heed and harken back to the days of high adventure, when a Game Master could sit down with an engaging prefab module, guiding parties through scenarios of danger, darkness, and the promise of hidden treasure. The stories experienced by the players and Game Masters within that shared framework became their own, with thrilling heroics and comedic failings cementing moments into memories.

Those days can be yours again with Cut to the Chase Games’ FANTASY RENAISSANCE line of game adventure modules! Each module is a PDF and print release that forms one part of a series filling hours of game play. Play through an entire series or mix and match to suit your lust for adventure!

What’s this Kickstarter for?
 
This campaign is to pay for the art, writing, editing, and printing of the first series in the FANTASY RENAISSANCE Adventure Module series, WK Wrath of the Kobolds. These first three are: 

WK1 Caves of the Kobold Queen – levels 1-3 scenario
WK2 Curse of the Kobold Eye – levels 1-3 level scenario
WK3 Wrath of the Over-Kobold – levels 2-4 level scenario

Also, as a special treat and thank you, you’ll get the module KS1 Tower of Skulls! It’s a higher level dungeon crawl (levels 10-12) in the grand tradition of dangerous trap-laden rooms guarding great treasure. It comes to you in an exclusive KICKSTARTER logo and series, and WON’T BE AVAILABLE IN THIS FORMAT AFTER THE CAMPAIGN IS OVER! It will likely show up later (who knows when?) in a new series but the KS series of modules have different colors and won’t be sold as part of the KS series EVER! A copy of KS1 is included with all pledges receiving WK1-3 (EXPERT and higher) in PDF or physical form as appropriate to the pledge level.

Module descriptions

The first series of Fantasy Renaissance Adventure Modules takes a group of inexperienced characters against the machinations of a ruthless kobold warlord and his minions. The modules are ready to be dropped into your campaign to provide hours of adventurous entertainment. Take a look at the back blurbs for each of the modules!

WK1 Caves of the Kobold Queen – The town of Ormkirk is in peril! Plagued by marauding kobolds that have been kidnapping townsfolk in the night, the townmaster of Ormkirk needs brave adventurers to end the pint-sized menace and return the kidnapped men. But what evil awaits you in the CAVES OF THE KOBOLD QUEEN?

WK2 Curse of the Kobold Eye – What strange curse has befallen you? And what does it have to do with an ancient kobold legend? The answers to these questions lie on a dangerous journey into history and its pint-sized makers as you confront the sinister nature of the CURSE OF THE KOBOLD EYE!

WK3 Revenge of the Over-Kobold – Danger strikes from the mountains! Rumors of great tribes of kobolds gathering under the leadership of a single commander spread across the land. Who but a brave band of adventurers can put a stop to these pint-sized menaces and end the REVENGE OF THE OVER-KOBOLD?

KS1 Tower of Skulls - Ancient and evil, the enigmatic Tower of Skulls with its dangerous chambers of death and plants rises to life only by the light of a full moon to plague the land. Each cycle, bands of heroes take up arms to stop the tide of darkness spreading from its unholy halls. Can you end the growth of evil this cycle in the TOWER OF SKULLS?

As the campaign progresses I'll be posting snippets of information from the modules, including some of the completed art, encounters, NPCs, and monsters. These are going to be sent out in the regular updates but will also be collected here.


What game system is this for?

There are so many great fantasy RPGs on the market now it’s hard to choose, and even harder to find support for some of them. The FANTASY RENAISSANCE Adventure Modules support four of the best fantasy RPGs that cater to old school gaming enjoyment – 5th Edition of the First Fantasy RPG, Swords & Wizardry, Pathfinder, and Savage Worlds. Each supported game system has its own version of the module with rules and statistic references appropriate to that game.

What’s in the modules?

Each FANTASY RENAISSANCE Adventure Module is going to be about 32 pages (some a bit longer, some a bit shorter), with a full color art piece on the cover and smaller black and white illustrations inside. Maps are going to be provided where necessary to facilitate both “theater of the mind” style play and miniatures, and handouts available where appropriate. Stylistically, you may recognize the fonts used and the formatting of the cover as hearkening back to the old 1st Edition modules of yore.

I’d like to think that these modules capture at least a portion of that old school magic that made early modules so well regarded – memorable encounters, tough scraps, interesting NPCS, engaging adventures. But you don’t have to take my word for it – we’ve released WK0 Night of the Mad Kobold for you to play and have fun with! Who are you?

I’m “Weird Dave” Olson and I’ve been running and playing roleplaying games for over 20 years now. I started out with AD&D 2nd Edition, and then moved on from there to other systems and editions, but I’ve always held a love of those early modules (that I’ve had to hunt and peck all these years to collect!). That love has translated into my published works, including Dungeon Magazine, Knights of the Dinner Table Magazine, Gygax Magazine, and many entries in Reality Blurs’ Old School Fantasy series for Savage Worlds and Fantasy Craft. I’ve written for the Adventurers League, the organized play arm for the fifth edition of Dungeons & Dragons as well, and continue to run modules at cons for them.

What’s the status of the project?

The first module (WK1 Caves of the Kobold Queen) is completely done and ready to go for all supported systems. The other three are written and ready to move forward with editing, art, and layout.

When would I get my delivery? 

Right now, if you pledge at the $5 or higher level you will get the first PDF as soon as the payments are processed through Kickstarter and the data is returned to me (so I can make sure the backer credits are done properly). It’s done and ready to be sent to you! The other three are written but awaiting editing, final art, and layout, so the PDFs for those should be delivered as soon as they are available (around December 2015). The print orders would be going out around December 2015 as well.

What about stretch goals?

There are many things to fund if we exceed the Kickstarter goal of $5,000!

At $6,000, everyone getting a physical shipment is going to receive a set of 3 free d6s with their order, with the Cut to the Chase Games logo for the “6” side! FOR FREE!

At $7,500, everyone getting a physical shipment is going to get a printed map pack for the WK Wrath of the Kobolds series! You’ll get three fold out maps, black and white, double-sided, each one detailing key sections of a module with 1” grids for miniature use. FOR FREE!

Add Ons Available

You can increase your pledge by the listed amount to add on the listed product. The process will become more formal through BackerKit after the campaign is over, but for now all that you have to do is increase your pledge by the listed amount if you want the add on.

  • $10.00 - Printed version of WK0 Night of the Mad Kobold in a system of your choice (NOTE: This is added automatically to the IMMORTAL backer level.)

What are these modules going to cost after the funding?

Assuming the campaign hits the funding goal we’re going to release the modules for PDF sales at a cost of $6 each and for print at $15 each. The first module (WK1 Caves of the Kobold Queen) should be available within a few weeks of the campaign ending (after everyone who has pledged get theirs!).

What setting are these modules going to be set in? 

I’ve intentionally left as much about the modules’ setting vague or blank so that they can be easily dropped into your campaign. Some of the higher level ones get a bit tricky for this but I still firmly believe that they can be integrated into nearly any fantasy campaign with a minimal of work on your part. Each module includes suggestions on where to place it within your campaign setting, describing the landscape and histories otherwise suggested by the adventure.

Who is going to be doing the art? 

I’m happy to be working with some fantastic artists to complete the art and maps for the modules. The cover art and some of the interior art is being done by Tim Wilsie, a great artist out of Portland, who also completed the cover for WK0 Night of the Mad Kobold. Other interior illustrations are going to be done by talented Minnesota artist Aaron Ostman. You can find and follow his work here.

The maps are being done by Glynn Seal of MonkeyBlood Design. His work captures the feel of those old school modules so well I had to work with him. He’s done a lot of other projects as well. Check his other work out here.

I’ll be posting samples of the art as we progress! I’ll be looking at additional art possibilities for the future modules as well.

Stretch Goals!

I don't want to get ahead of myself, and my goal is get the first trilogy funded to prove that there's enough interest in these types of modules to move forward. Let's see how it goes and then talk about how far we can get! One thing for certain though - it won't happen without YOUR support! Check this location for stretch goals as they get announced.

Add On Management and Digital Delivery

If you would like to add on another printed trilogy of FANTASY RENAISSANCE Adventure Modules to your pledge (for a different game system, or for an unlocked stretch goal), simply increase your pledge by $30 for each additional trilogy you want. If stretch goals are reached, you can add on $15 for PDF copies in all supported game systems. Once the campaign is completed (assuming it's successful!) we'll be using a third party platform (BackerKit) to manage add ons and game system versions for physical orders.

PDF copies will be delivered to backers via DriveThruRPG so that they're all in one place and hosted by a reliable source. Also you can be sure you have the most up-to-date version of the PDFs as well!

Cut to the Chase Games LLC

I feel it's worth mentioning to say that the funds raised by this Kickstarter do not go directly to me or my own bank account. I have established Cut to the Chase Games LLC as a separate legal business entity and all money will be used to pay for company-related assets (writing, editing, art, layout, extra things for backers, stretch goals, etc.). I feel this separation between myself and the company is important.

Risks and challenges

The four modules are written and adapted to the appropriate game systems. The first one is laid out and ready to be sent to the printers and into your hands as a PDF. The other ones need maps, art, and editing completed, which should be completed in the timeline (to be completed around December 2015). I anticipate no major delays at this point, but I assure you to remain open in communication as the project progresses. While this is my first Kickstarter, I’ve been a part of a lot good and bad ones in the past, and the key I’ve always found is clear and open communication with backers. You deserve no less!
