My online column The Weird Accordion to Al was born of a conviction that the music and world of American pop parodist "Weird Al" Yankovic is as worthy of deep analysis and appreciation as the work of slightly more serious rock icons like Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan.
Since Al had chosen me personally to tell his story with 2012's WEIRD AL: THE BOOK (which I co-wrote with Al), I figured that I was just the person to do it.
To that end, I decided to use the the release of "Weird Al" Yankovic's Grammy-winning, career-spanning 15 volume box set as an excuse to write extensively about every single song on every single "Weird Al" Yankovic album for my Weird Accordion to Al column at my website, Nathan Rabin's Happy Place.
Two years, 14 albums and 165 songs into the project, I'm more convinced than ever that Al deserves a tribute this massive and achingly sincere.
I love writing the column but it makes so much more sense as a book. This loving tribute to a true American original will be the possible version of The Weird Accordion to Al. Where I never quite found a coherent visual aesthetic for the column in its online form the book will feature gorgeous and extensive illustrations from prominent illustrator and colorist Felipe Sobreiro, and will be copy edited to such an extent you'll barely be able to recognize it as my work!
As with Weird Al: The Book, "Weird Al" Yankovic will be writing the introduction to The Weird Accordion to Al. That's right, we got the man himself! Pretty, pretty exciting.
Also, if you and your pals buy more than 5 copies in a group I will happily do a Skype call with your book club and/or college class.
Oh, and to make things even more appealing, if you pre-order a copy of The Weird Accordion to Al book I will thank you in the acknowledgments and follow you on Twitter. Just give me your twitter handle so I don't forget. It's my very literal way of thanking you for your kindness and support.
We're looking to publish at the end of October/early November, just in time for holiday shopping. So even if you're not personally an Al super-fan this is the perfect gift for the comedy geek in your life, and you definitely have at least one, or several dozen.
The Weird Accordion to Al is primarily for lovers of all thing "Weird Al" Yankovic and/or fans of my writing about music and pop culture but I would love for it to have a second life as an academic book, a fun, accessible look into parody and satire about someone everyone in the world loves, or at least should.
To make all of this even more appealing, we’re introducing a pair of stretch goals. If we hit twelve thousand dollars, I will write about every episode of The Weird Al Show for patrons. If we hit 15,000 dollars, meanwhile, I’ll write up Al’s entire season as the bandleader/co-host on Comedy Bang Bang for a special bonus section of the book I’ll deliver in either PDF or Kindle form sometime around the turn of 2020. That’s a measure of how deeply invested we are in this project, and also how badly I need a little money to offset the lost income from the many outside columns I’ve had cancelled over the past few years.

Risks and challenges
This is a bit of a niche project. It didn't attract the biggest following online but I have faith that it will be much more successful as a book. I want to do this the right way so I have expenses like illustrations, publishing, copy-editing, printing and book design to worry about/pay for as well.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
