Part 2? What was Part 1?
One year ago, Zach Weinersmith launched his first choosable pathway gamebook, Trial of the Clone, and raised over $130,000 in 30 days. We thought it was pretty good, but don't take our word for it. Cory Doctorow thought so as well!
About the Creator
About the Book
In the first book (SPOILERS), you play a lowly clone who fights his way up to rule an empire. At the end of that book, you can choose to become good or evil. This sequel assumes you turned to good.
The story takes place at the end of your rule as a benevolent sovereign, when the universe is once thrown again into turmoil. It's up to you to save it, but you'll have to navigate your way to supreme power in order to succeed.
If you haven't read the first book, we like to describe the tone as "Douglas Adams but a lot meaner." If you like satire and deadpan humor and space battles, this book is for you.
The book will contain a number of illustrations by the amazing Chris Jones. Unlike the first book, this time we're letting you decide how many illustrations go into it. We're hiring Chris to do some much fancier artwork than last time! But, it costs a bit more to get this quality of work. So, we're starting at a baseline of 6 pieces from Chris. As we raise money, the number of illustrations goes up. There are a lot of scenes that'd be really funny with added artwork, and we'd love to show them to you.
BAH! Enough prattle! What stuff can I get?
The main offering is of course the book, available both in dead tree and live electron form. However, you can also get a signed version of any book Zach Weinersmith has done for breadpig. We recommend the first Trial of the Clone if you don't have it. If you get any physical (for the purposes of this kickstarter, electrons are decidedly not physical) item, we throw in a bookmark for free. The bookmark is designed for Trial of the Clone style stat-keeping.
If you're feeling fancier (or dorkier), we're offering custom 4-sided dice. The gamebook uses a base-4 system to determine outcomes. Normally, this is done by picking a random page in the book and consulting the lower right hand corner. But, if you wanna look like a total badass, dice are where it's at.
These dice have a symbol on them, used for the 0. The symbol is important to the book, but if we told you why, we'd ruin the SECRET ENDING.
We also give you the option to buy other of Zach's books, signed. Zach doesn't do many con appearances these days, so this is the best way to get a signature. The available books are these:
Science: Ruining Everything Since 1543 (all science comics)
(Note yet available for retail)
If you're one of those ultra-tycoons who want to go above and beyond, we have two options: You can buy an original digital drawing back Zach. OR, you can pay for everyone to have one more piece of art by Chris Jones. If you choose the second option, you'll be listed as a benefactor in the credits of the book and will receive a nice print of the art.
If we reach higher levels of funding, that may allow us to open up a few more options.
Roadmap to Glory
This map lists fundraising intervals we hope to achieve. Each time we cross one, something cool will be announced!
I’ve Never Heard of Zach Weinersmith or SMBC or Trial of the Clone. Why Should I Be Interested?
Because you like jokes and adventure stories, and being able to choose your own path (i.e. kill stuff) in those adventure stories! If you like high fantasy, low humor, and medium difficulty, you’ll like this book.
If you don’t know my comics, you can check them out at http://www.smbc-comics.com/
Here are some of reddit’s favorites: http://www.reddit.com/domain/smbc-comics.com/top/
If you like the jokes there, you'll probably like this book.
You'll also notice that I give it all away for free. In order to keep myself afloat, I try to sell merchandise to my readers. By buying this book, you give me more latitude to do more fun projects like this one.
In the last book, almost all the proper nouns were dirty words were in Czech. I pretty much exhausted that gold mine. So, most of the proper nouns in the sequel are dirty words in Basque. So, if you're Basque and easily offended, you may want to avoid this book.
Risks and challenges
Although we don't foresee any trouble, it's always possible that the creation of a new product will take longer than expected. That said, both Zach Weinersmith and Breadpig have done many kickstarters, and all of the distribution work is already in place. So, we don't anticipate any major issues.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
