Hi everybody,

Jordan here with our last update before Shadowrun Returns gets into your hands. (Wow, I can’t believe I just typed that!)

I want to take a moment to personally thank you again for all your support over the last year or so. It’s been so great hearing from you on the forums, meeting you in person at cons, and eating the bagels and pizza you sent us. It’s definitely an experience I’ll never forget!

I also want to publicly thank the team at Harebrained Schemes for all their incredibly hard work over the past year. What a great group of people! They’re passionate about making games, about working in a highly-collaborative, high-energy environment, and about making Shadowrun Returns. They’ve really risen to the challenge and it’s been a pleasure going on this adventure with them.

On behalf of the team, I sincerely hope you enjoy Shadowrun Returns. It’s been a labor of love and represents one of the greatest collaborations of my career. Thanks again for the opportunity.

So what’s next? Well, work on the Berlin campaign has already begun. And Linux, of course! And localization!

But that’s not all...

Below, you’ll see the first piece of concept art and a little video that tells you about our next Harebrained Scheme, Golem Arcana, which will launch on Kickstarter in August.

While it was tempting to start another tactical RPG project similar to Shadowrun Returns, we really believe in the potential that Kickstarter holds for launching new game worlds and experiences. I had this idea brewing in the back of my head for awhile and we decided that now was the right time to launch a new Harebrained Scheme.

So, the core Shadowrun team will continue to focus on Shadowrun Returns, while a small part of the studio branches off in this bold new direction. I'm really excited about our new game world and I hope you will be, too. Take a look below.

Have fun tomorrow, chummers!

Cut and paste works after I turned off the AntiVirus software.

    2. Leo Arceo

My bad! Turn off the antivirus software! Apologies HBS!

    3. Leo Arceo

Steam patched the game and I tried entering the special backer key. Can't paste still. Totally trolled again!

    4. Leo Arceo

Had serious problems trying to enter the special backer code yesterday using cut and paste. Tried it by hand but the window only lets you see the first 50 or 60 characters. Waiting for Steam to patch it before I try again. But, wow, that was a total troll! Hopefully it'll work today.

@RC Tried to do it this way several times, but still no luck. Tried doing it manually, but haven't had luck there either. Any other advice?

    6. Sean Benner on

So, is the SPECIAL ABILITY the fact that you can see and talk to a certain otherworldly someone at the end of the bar?

And is the in-game DOC WAGON benefit just a few extra Doc Wagon Trama Kits?

If not, then I think that even after receiving the in-game confirmation message that my code submission had been successful, that I do not have access to either of these benefits.

If those are in fact what the bonus content amounts to, then its working!

Note: USE a MOUSE, not a Touchpad!

    8. RC on

      Hoi Chummers!

      Try this:

      1) Copy the Backer code from your E-mail by highlighting it with your mouse, RIGHT CLICKING, and selecting copy (don't use ctrl-c or similar).

      2) Paste the Backer code in to notepad, not wordpad, not ms word.

      3) Drag/resize the Notepad window horizontally so the entire code is on 1 continuous line, not word-wrapped around the edge, Make sure there are no spaces or linebreaks in the code.

      4) Place your cursor at the end of the code, and use the right-arrow to see if there are any empty "spaces" after the code, If there are, then use backspace to delete any empty spaces after the code. Be careful not to accidentally delete any visible characters from the end of the code.

      5) Start Shadowrun Returns, and go to the screen you can enter the code

      6) Alt-tab, minimize or otherwise switch windows from Shadowrun Returns, back to Notepad *without closing Shadowrun Returns*

      7) COPY the code, make sure you do not have any blank spaces before or after the code when you copy it. You should ONLY be copying the code from the first character to the last character and NO additional spaces! USE RIGHT CLICK to Select COPY - don't use ctrl-c.

      8) Alt-Tab or otherwise bring your screen focus back to Shadowrun Returns

      9) Click ONCE inside the box you're required to enter the code in

      10) Use Ctrl-v to Paste the code in to the box. Wait a moment, you should see the code inside the box.

      11) Left click SUBMIT - not NOT hit the Enter button.

      12) If this did not work, redo the steps, and at step 11, instead of clicking Submit, click Enter.

...for each person I've helped so far that was having a problem, these steps worked.

If you use a Mac, still use ctrl-v NOT cmd-

I hope this helps. Good luck, Chummers! ^_^

Tried ctrl+v and still not copying it into the box. It will copy fine to anywhere else, but for some reason I can't get it to copy to the submit box. any help would be appreciated. I'm trying on Windows 8.

    10. The Old Farmer on

For people having trouble putting in the backer code in windows try copying the text then select the input window and while holding the ctrl key press v and it dropped the code in and was accepted.

Clearing up a few things, the Backer code is NOT Steam only. Yes we're trouble shooting some copy-past issues with Macs, but that's unrelated to whether it's a Steam version or not.

As for getting updates, we ARE going to be updating and patching the DRM-Free version. The only exception to that is that after Berlin, it won't get future DLC support. But that doesn't mean we won't support it from a bug fixing, updating standpoint.

    12. David McCloskey on

@Jason yes that is odd indeed, but finally worked.

      Jason Franklin on

The backer code is Steam only and apparently it's hard-coded to ctrl+V for paste. This goes for the OSX version as well. Using ctrl+C to copy and ctrl+V to paste the code works. That seems a bit sloppy to me since OSX users are used to command+V.

    14. David McCloskey on

      @James I agree.

There are some things that might be a tad confusing at first, the two versions of the game, the licensing issues for future content, and whatnot, but so far I am happy with the game.

Wasn't able to input the backer code into the non drm version of the game, don't know if it was already included or whatnot, but when the steam version finishes downloading I'll check (it might have been a steam only code?).

That's my only issue so far.

    15. James Jones

Harebrained has managed to put out a pretty nice game on a small budget and in a fairly short span of time even though I didn't agree with every decision they made. I don't like DRM. I'd prefer saving anytime but that part is understandably due to budget and time constraints. There are always going to be bugs to squash after release, but reviewers have been able to complete the game as is. Overall I think the project was successful and I'm happy to have backed it. There were compromises but it really is great to see this type of game I love coming back.

      Jason Franklin on

The big difference between the DRM free version and the Steam version is the Steam version will be supported, patched, and allow future expansions. The DRM free version is "as-is" and exempt from updates and expansions. Really a downer really because it forces you into Steam to be able to play any of the later content.

    17. David McCloskey on

And anyone else having trouble copy pasting the backer code in the options screen?

    18. David McCloskey on

So... anyone know the differences between the steam version and the "drm free" version we downloaded from the HBS site?

Really enjoying the game, but really frustrated i can't save when I want to. I feel like i'm on my NES again, and just leaving it on at alll times so I dont lose progress.

    20. deadtorights on

Also, it's kinda BS that backers have limits on the number of downloads that we can use. I think I may be done backing any of your future games, I feel as if I'm getting cheated when i had faith in you.

    21. deadtorights on

When is the linux build coming out? I don't use Microsoft/Apple spy OSes.

    22. British on

Hmmm, is the DRM-free version that much different than Steam one's ?
I have "(Development Build: *stuff*)" on top of my screen, which TotalBiscuit, for instance, don't have in his video...

Do we get the short end of the stick for everything ? :x

    23. Matthew Katcoff on

@Rusty, the number of anthology downloads is 5 and I had a crash while trying to download it so with 1 dl I now have 3 left. So that's the math I'm talking about. Then again you don't make any sense since 1600X1200 isn't exactly the same as 1900X1080. For my given resolution I have 5 shots that that's it.

    24. itamar on

HBS, is it possible for user-made content to include voice-over in conversations?

I'm confused how I was "being lied to" when I'm getting everything I gave them money for. Are there a few disappointments? Sure, I'm not going to lie. I have been disappointed with character design choice from the beginning and also some of the supported modding limitations. To hear about the save annoyance with only a 12 hour campaign is a bit of a disappointment. Hopefully Berlin will be a bit meatier. Still I don't regret backing them at all and they are delivering everything I gave them money for.

    26. Rusty Q. Shackleford on

Game downloads limit: 10 for each OS.

Wallpaper limit: 25 (5 each of 5 different wallpaper sizes)

Hmmm, looks like less Game downloads than Wallpapers...

      Xuio on

@Nils Pirate drmfree version is already available. Don't you think it's pointless to limit our backers accounts?

    28. Matthew Katcoff on

Well looking forward to actually playing the game but just wanted to let you know kind of upset at the limited number of downloads from your website, especially of the backer only stuff. Especially since the number of downloads of those things I actually paid extra for are more limited than of the game itself. I can't think of any good reason to limit this.

    29. Missing avatar

      Nils on

I really wondering what everybody is complaining about. We are getting a DRM-free version. 10 downloads is ok. The number is big enough that nobody should run into problems. You have to limit the number of downloads to prevent abuse (just imagine somebody stole your login credentials and publishes them somewhere on some warez sites).

      JJ on

I didn't receive an email with a key, sent a message to HBS for help.

*sigh* The hits keep rolling in. Limited number of downloads for the DRM free stuff. Now I just fully regret backing this. I guess you live and you learn.

    33. British on

      DRM-free version is being downloaded...

    34. Jason Beardsley on

The codes were emailed to everyone about a week and a half ago.

Can someone tell me if they're any updates on when the Linux version will be released?

      The baby *is* the price.

    36. Simon M Greaves on

Is there a roll out of codes, or am I screwed?

      Xuio on

@Valery Yeah, it looks like the number of downloads from HBS are limited...

    38. Steve Corfield on

Am I the only one who didn't receive is key?

    39. Sean Benner on

@Erik Dahlman Thank you for being smarter then me, sir. I can confirm that SHIFT+Insert does not work on pc, but CTRL+V does.

    40. Albino Dragon

The reward code is really long (looks like two). I copy and pasted it from the email into a text document to make sure there weren't any line breaks.

I had an issue with copy/paste on my mac. Using Control-V instead of Command-V seemed to do the trick.

    41. Jason Beardsley on

Any update as to when Linux users can expect their copy?

Installing now, very excited! Hopefully with the Steam integration we'll see some more features like Achievements and Trading Cards down the line, would love to have a Shadowrun background and badge for my Steam profile.

    43. Valeriy on

Anyone knows what exactly those "remaning: 10" are meaning?

Limited number of downloads? Is this some kind of a joke?

    44. Benjamin Reed on

Yeah, I can't Copy+Paste on Mac. Dunno if it's the same on Windows, will have to try that when I get home tonight.

    45. Sean Benner on

@Ben W Bell oh snap. Cant select in the box either. only accepts linear text entered from the keyboard directly.

    46. Sean Benner on

@Ben W Bell trying that now. It will be more like last 3rd, then 2nd to last 3rd, the start though. The box is really dramatically smaller then the code haha

    47. RC on

@Jason, log out then back in to Steam. Hopefully will fix it. Has for a few other chummers ^_^

If you're having trouble typing it in due to the box size, a workaround is to type the last half in, check it, cursor back to the start and type the first half in and check it. I haven't downloaded yet so I don't know if this will work, but it's a common workaround for things like that.
