Your First Look and the Biggest. Sale. Evar.

Howdy! Mitch here. Is it mid-May already? Time flies when you’re making games. I just pulled my nose out of the project long enough to give you a quick update on our progress.

Shadowrun: Hong Kong is on track for an important milestone at the end of this month: Feature Complete! That’s when the code for all our new features is working in the game. There will still be a little placeholder art remaining for some of the new interfaces we’ve added, but the underlying code works like it’s supposed to and everything will be in the hands of the artists and the designers after that. For the engineers, it’s all bug fixes, tweaks, and polish for the rest of the project!

On a different front, we’re pretty excited because as of today, Shadowrun: Hong Kong has its very own Steam page, complete with our first set of screenshots and a teaser trailer! Take a look!

When you go to our Steam page, you’ll see that the Deluxe Version of Shadowrun: Hong Kong is now available for pre-order at $19.99. (It’ll go for $29.99 once the game launches). The Deluxe Version comes with the original soundtrack and The Art of Shadowrun: Hong Kong PDF. Tell your friends who missed out on our Kickstarter campaign!

And, for our 3 year anniversary, we’re also offering Shadowrun Returns and Shadowrun: Dragonfall - Director’s Cut at blowout prices - $2.99 and $4.50!!! This is a great weekend for new people to see what all the fuss has been about.

We’d really appreciate it if you’d help us spread the word. Here’s a supercool banner to pop into your favorite social media feed.

Have a great holiday weekend, y’all!

@Fitheach Were you hoping to trigger a response other than, LOL!? ^_^

    2. Fitheach on June 11, 2015

I think its important to remember that not everyone values things the same so while its perfectly valid to say its not apples to apples it doesn't invalidate my irritation. I valued the art book to the tune of $45 (basically I couldn't care less about the rest of the stuff) so when it gets placed at what I feel is a low price point its annoying. For me the deluxe should have been $35-45 after all practically no one will pay that for it as it goes into the endless cycle of discounts all the online store do. I realise Harebrained have legal constraints but I feel that the price points and offerings should mirror the kickstarter tiers as much as possible to avoid stuff like this. They construct the tiers so they can do this better.

I'm also irritated with Harebrained by their tardy showing on DRM-free platforms the patches show up on Humble and GOG only after a long delay so updates like these that treat Steam as the one and only don't humour me. And yes they almost certainly make most of their money on Steam but indie devs of smaller or similar size manage to do a better job and so I don't care for excuses along those lines.

      Hoi WintermuteX!

I disagree. There's a difference on Kickstarter between the usual promo rewards included in the reward tiers and "Kickstarter exclusive" rewards, which you're describing...and most of HBS's Kickstarter Backers have previously spoken out against exclusivity for the majority of rewards, as it's been noted before, repeatedly, how exclusivity sucks, omae. There's nothing wrong with HBS picking out one of the many non-exclusive rewards available to backers at the $55 tier for their pre-release promo. And as you say, "The idea of KS is..." to help a Creator realize a vision, and see it succeed, even after the project goals are met. No matter how you personally choose to use Kickstarter, or how promotional rewards are offered, that IS the idea of Kickstarter.

Now, as I mentioned in another comment, I understand where the anxiety over their using the art book as a promo comes from. So far, I haven't seen a single good or well-reasoned argument that supports said anxiety, but some people do have knee-jerk reactions to things before they look at the reality and realize they're not actually being screwed. However, the FEELING doesn't go away in spite of the reality, which is why I suggested that HBS offer all backers, especially those under the $55 tier, the option to purchase the art book at some reduced price, I don't know if they're allowed to do this with their licensing issues, so their hands may be tied. We'll see how it works out in the coming days. In no way though, have HBS been "southern parts of the body." When you look at EVERYTHING the $55 tier gets, you'll one's been cheated, and HBS hasn't screwed anyone. More importantly, the $20 pre-order price doesn't include all those things. It comes with the art book, which by itself isn't $55. At $55 in addition to the art book, backers ALSO get... The Shadows of Hong Kong mini-campaign expansion, The Original Shadowrun E-Novel, The Shadowrun 5th Edition Digital Tools box, The AUDIO COMMENTARY TRACK, The TWO High Rez digital Shadowrun Posters that combine in to a panorama...AND MORE. So please, stop comparing the pre-order to the $55 tier, simply put...the pre-order doesn't stack up. Not even close. Fullstop. ^_^

@RC about the artbook 55$ thing: Total BS. The idea of KS is, thats what most of the folks feel like, there should be some special reward for helping getting a product done by their money. And how HBS handled this EVERYtime like 33% off even before launch and after they milked more from the peeps of the KS campaign shows that they are southern parts of the body. fullstop.

If it actually dropped in July I'd be so, so stoked. Every time I look at my Steam library I think to myself, "I don't want to play anything on this list. I want to play Hong Kong."

    6. RC on May 26, 2015

      Hoi John!

I'm only speculating when I say, I think HBS would like to launch prior to Gencon, if they can...which might mean July, but the best laid plans of metahuman & they may launch within their original estimated time frame of some time in August. ^_^

    7. Jeff on May 26, 2015

Weather is a fickle mistress. Can't count on her for nothing. Just remember school. End's in late May, early June. Starts late August, early September.

June, July, and August, are considered the months of summer in the Northern Hemisphere.

      @RC Yeah, it'd be pretty great! :D

I'm kind of confused regarding the release date. The trailer says summer, but it's closer to August, right?

    11. Jeff on May 25, 2015

Running in shadows, is a bit like running with scissors, they are both dangerous. In fact, a shadow, is a shadow, is a shadow. Everything looks the same with the lights off.
We now return you to your scheduled programming of complaining... ; p

    12. RC on May 25, 2015

...and I realize Somali would likely be very different from something like that...but still sounds like some really interesting shadows to 'run in... ^_^

    13. RC on May 25, 2015

@John A 'run in Africa would be WIZ, Chummer! I've always wanted to explore Morocco in Shadowrun...particularly Casablanca, if for no other reason than the nostalgia of it. Shadowrun's first edition Seattle was heavily influenced by the movie Casablanca, which gave it its sense of classic shadowy noir. ^_^

On a side note: those assets look amazing. I wonder if Is0bel's side mission will take us to Somali, as hinted in the description? If so, I can't wait to see what it looks like. Shadowrun Africa is a really interesting setting; there's a story in Spells & Chrome that's worth the price of the book alone, in my opinion--though, I *did* get it for free...

John Webb on May 24, 2015

@RC You're doing quite a bit of damage control. ;) You're absolutely right though. In my case, I wanted the art book but couldn't justify the expense. However, I'm getting the novel, audio commentary, soundtracks, the tabletop starter box, etc., so how can I be mad? People need to relax.

    17. RC on May 24, 2015

*the comparisons being made. Arg! Need comment editing, Kickstarter!

    18. RC on May 24, 2015

      Hoi Jonathan!

      Steam users don't get:

The Shadows of Hong Kong mini-campaign expansion

      The Original Shadowrun E-Novel.

The Shadowrun 5th Edition Digital Tools box.

The TWO High Rez digital Shadowrun Posters that combine in to a panorama.

      ...and more.

Now, if HBS provided the art book ,pdf for ~$10 to $20 to Backers below the $55 tier, I'd say that's a fair compromise for those who didn't have the faith or nuyen to pony up during the Kickstarter funding period and missed out, but one's been cheated here, and while I comprehend why those who are bugged by it feel the way they do, there comparisons being made aren't apples to apples, and are poor arguments as to why they should get something more that they didn't pledge for.

The flip side of this is, if the art book .pdf is worth $20 retail, buying the Deluxe Edition on steam gets the art book, another copy of the soundtrack, and another copy of the game for the same price, which is a bargain.

Though, no one below the $55 tier ~deserves~ the art book .pdf, because they didn't have the faith in HBS to support them at a higher tier, or they just didn't luck out and have enough nuyen available when it was offered as part of that tier. We all miss out on sales, and it sucks when it happens, but again HBS isn't screwing anyone. $55 tier Backers get a plethora of other Rewards in addition to the art book, as listed above, and Backers below the $55 tier didn't pledge for it when they had the chance.

Sooo... Steam users get the art book at the $20 level, but Kickstarter users have to jump in at the $55 level? So... is the mini campaign going to be $35 for steam users then?

Seriously, that's a bit of a kick in scrotum for us KS backers.

    20. janju on May 23, 2015

I hope Lucky Strike joins the team this time. She looked bad ass.

    21. RC on May 22, 2015

Hoi Bomoo! The steam deluxe edition doesn't come with the free mini-campaign that Kickstarter backers do get. Providing the steam deluxe edition would just confuse matters for HBS and other backers. Steam users will have to pay separately for the mini-campaign, and they don't get the other benefits we Backers do, which was explained in an earlier comment. ^_^

    22. Bomoo on May 22, 2015

@João Carlos Bastos - Every backer entitled to a copy of the game should get the "deluxe" edition on Steam as a matter of course, if you ask me, considering it's being handed out at the same price as the standard edition to non-backers.

    23. Missing avatar

      João Carlos Bastos

Please make it so that backers at $55+ get the deluxe edition on Steam. It's always great to have the digital extras on Steam, for convenience.
With the past Shadowrun campaign, we only got a regular copy of the game on the platform, which was disappointing.

Hendrik Belitz on May 22, 2015

These are great news! I only wonder why you're limiting your anniversary sale to Steam?

    25. RC on May 22, 2015

Hoi Bomoo! You also get the Shadows of Hong Kong expansion, which the Steam bundle doesn't...

...and the Original Shadowrun E-Novel, which the Steam bundle doesn't. Though, you may have included that with the swanky .pdf's, such as the Shadowrun Digital tools.

And, the $35 tier also gets the Audio Commentary track from the dev team, which the Steam bundle doesn't. Along with the two digital posters that combine in to a Shadowrun panorama.

You couldn't get all this from DriveThruRPG, and especially not at their prices.

Ultimately, each pledge level gets it's rewards, and the rewards of those below it. We get what we pledged for...which is seeing a new Shadowrun title developed for us to play! And a few Rewards as a thanks for doing so, which are certainly beyond what "Steam sale tourists" are offered. ^_^

    26. Bomoo on May 22, 2015

@Svetlin - So I backed at $35, more than the Steam deluxe edition which is currently $20, but not quite high enough for the art book perk. Steam user buying the game without having backed it gets a free art book that I don't. Yes, I got swanky PDFs, but that's something I could've just bought from DriveThruRPG for the $15 price difference. It boggles my mind any time a developer doesn't treat their backers as VIPs and offers them deals beyond what Steam sale tourists are offered.

Keys will be made available in your BackerKit account closer to the launch of the game. Be sure to head to to let us know what platform you'd like your key to be from or there will likely be a delay. A link to The Art of Shadowrun: Hong Kong will also be available in your BackerKit account at that time if you pledged at the $55 level or above.

      Hey HBS!

Can you speed up the katana attack animation? I created a melee character and the attacks are painfully slow.

Also, where should we send bugs to?

    29. Nerdy Suit on May 21, 2015

What I loved seeing most about this Steam sale -- that the regular price will be $30 ($15 above the KS price) and the preorder sale is $20 ($5 over the KS price). This is exactly how it should be -- all KS games should be significantly cheaper compared to the released price. There are some that have not followed this logical guideline and have lost social capital with their fans as a result (cough...Red Hook/Darkest Dungeon...cough). Thank you, Harebrained.

The art book wasn't the only reward at the $55 tier...

    36. Fitheach on May 21, 2015

Hmm the only reason I went for the $55 tier was the art book kinda unfortunate that it seems I could have got the $25 tier and just bought it later and got an extra copy of the game to boot. (Not that I would have if its Steam exclusive but the rancour remains)

    37. Liack on May 21, 2015

      Just quick questions:
-will we receive the steam key by email?
-will the Art of Shadowrun: Hong Kong book be included in that key?
-Is that book the same as the one from the 55$ level (making that level only about portrait and out of print pdf) ?

    38. J.R. Riedel on May 21, 2015

Glad to see a steam page!

    39. Radon on May 21, 2015

Quite disappointing that this sale is Steam-exclusive---should have been on Humble and GOG as well! (you cannot even preorder HongKong on GOG...)

    40. Bomoo on May 21, 2015

Why are Steam buyers getting the art book that was the $55 tier reward for $20? Did you open the art book pdf to all kickstarter backers and I missed the update? Otherwise that'd be kinda greasy, Harebrained, and I'd be disappointed in you.
