BATTLETECH: What's Next?

Posted by Harebrained Schemes LLC (Creator)

First of all, to our Backers and new players alike - thank you for your incredible outpouring of love and support last week following the launch of BATTLETECH, and for sharing so many of your amazing game experiences with us. As a small developer, these stories mean the world to us. It's why we do this.

From the heartfelt reactions of our Backers, to the kind words from reviewers, to the epic marathons on YouTube, to the hysterical reactions on Twitch, to the goofy memes floating through social media, this week has been a whirlwind and we are thrilled to be on this ride with you.

We could easily fill this entire post and more just rounding up press and fan reactions to the game - but we'd rather talk about what's next. From the start of this project, we've viewed launch not as the end of the road, but as the birth of a living product. Over the course of development, you might recall that we often answered speculative questions about post-launch features or content with, "in success, all things are possible."

Well - thanks to you, this is the success we hoped for. And many things are now possible! We're working with Paradox on a roadmap for the next year of BATTLETECH development. This will include regular bugfixing, quality-of-life improvements, and free Updates adding new features to the game. Here's a look at the next few months of that roadmap.

BATTLETECH Post-Launch Roadmap

1.  Compatibility / Performance Investigations
Our launch last week wasn't perfect. A subset of players are experiencing hardware/system compatibility and performance issues that our team is working hard to investigate. Solutions for critical issues are always our top priority, and will be released as soon as they're available and tested. Typically, we will release patches to our public_beta branch on Steam for a few days for testing before we push them to the default branch.

On that note - last Friday we released our first patch to the public_beta branch for testing. Today, that 1.0.1 Patch went live - you can read the full changelog here. We expect to release more patches to public_beta in the coming days and weeks.

2. General BugFix (Late May)
We expect to release at least one general bugfix/improvements patch later in May.

3. Localization (French, German, Russian) and Linux Support
These are both Kickstarter commitments and high priorities for our post-launch roadmap. (Along with a couple other Kickstarter commitments that didn't make it in for launch.) We don't have a more precise ETA yet for these items but will update you as soon as we do.

4. Update #1: Customization & Player Options (June/July)
We're already beginning work on our first larger free Update to BATTLETECH. This Update is all about customization and reacting to common pieces of feedback that we've received from you on the game. Here's a list of items we're currently looking at for Update 1 this summer

--Accelerated Combat Options - We're working on options for players who would like to accelerate the pace of combat missions.

--MechWarrior Customization - We know that many players would like to change the appearance, callsign, name, and voice of all their MechWarriors, not just their Commander. This didn't make it in for launch but we'll be adding it in Update 1

--Granular difficulty settings - A set of discrete options for players to customize the challenge level of the game in different areas.

--MechLab / Store / Salvage Quality-of-Life Improvements - Interface additions to reduce friction when buying and salvaging new items.

--Tutorial-skip Option - Allowing players who have already played the prologue missions to skip those missions when starting a new campaign, and get right to the Leopard.

--Addressing Difficulty Spikes - We'll be working on smoothing out some issues with unexpectedly hard (or easy) content. Not to remove all difficulty variance, but to address clear outliers.

--Live-streaming Quality-of-Life Improvements - Audio persisting when alt-tabbed, for example.

It's important to note that the exact contents of Update 1 may shift during development. Please consider these general directions and priorities. We'll post a more detailed and updated list of what's in the Update closer to its release.

The above is just the beginning! We'll be continuing with more free Updates after Update 1, and we'd also love to release a larger paid content Expansion or two - but right now we're staying focused on bugfixes and immediate reactions to launch feedback.

With your support, we could not be more excited to continue making BATTLETECH even bigger and better.

Thank you.

As an aside in relation to DLC..pretty much anything you put out for this game paid or otherwise is sold for my part.. i'll take it, sign me up.. more, yes more please ;)

WOOT WOOT! *raise the roof* queue happy dance.. so happy it has been a success, it deserved it. Such a good game barring a couple of balancing (difficulty rating being humungously misleading being one of them lol) kinks.# and was well worth the wait! awesome job guys! Now back to playing it ;)

I love that game. Good game and good job.

I love the single player campaign, I find myself playing it for hours on end. That said I would really like Ultra wide monitor support. I also think the lack of a good tutorial or manual are going to be an issue for new players. If not for the beta manual I would have a lot of questions. Just some ideas:

      1. Consider a better tutorial or perhaps guidance when refitting mechs. Nothing worse of a new player than spending in game time and money on a load out. Putting it on the field and finding out one shot send them into over heat. To me this is the single biggest hurdle for new players.

      2. Second suggestion, how about some tips on weapon ranges? I consider myself an experienced player but just an idea of hey a PPC is better from x distance or a AC5 is better from here. Even visual cues would help.

      3. I think the contracts are fantastic but i wish I didn't need to travel from system to system to find one I think i can handle. For example last night I has 3 contracts all were 3 skulls which I assume is how hard they were. I knew I wouldn't win any of those so i need to blindly jump to a new system to see if i can find something easier. Had to be a better system than that.

    5. David A. Zecchini

Playing the game to the exclusion of all else and loving every minute of it. Had some lockup issues in certain missions but most seem to have gone away moving to windowed mode. It's not "everything I always wanted Battletech to be" but it's pretty darned close.

I'd very much suggest "mini campaigns" for additional content. Smaller story chains without voice support or (minimal) cutscenes that can be made quickly and cheaply, run concurrent with the story campaign (or after it's been completed) and can be made available as DLC. Maybe even an editor to put those tools in the hands of the players.

It would be nice to have more "Ironman" options, possibly also a persistent "campaign like" mode where you're slowly building your own mercenary company over time (outside of the campaign context) and a multiplayer mode tied into that. Similar to online Magic: the Gathering games which let you build your card pool and play with decks built only from that resource.

There are a lot of places you can go with this ... here's hoping you can keep the momentum going. Mechwarriors, prepare for drop!

Great game, what a thrill so far. And what's more, unlike beta, the finished version runs on a calculator (or at least a 7-year-old PC, which is basically the same these days), I can't wait to play it on my phone again in a few years!

I'm only afraid that this game might not find audience outside the circle of Battletech and turn-based strategy fans, especially based on how shallow the tutorial was, and that would be a shame. Hopefully that's not going to be the case.

    7. Tim Jagodzinski on

Good work with the game! Some QoL issues and mediocre animations aside, this is a really good faithful adaptation of the board game with just the right changes to make it more streamlined for PC gamers.

As for upcoming paid content: I would LOVE to see a 'Cinematic DLC' which would include voice acting for all text for all characters and some facial animation. I would be willing to dish out 10 bucks for it, maybe even 15.

      I just LOVE this game!
TBH I didn't expect it to be THAT good and fun!
I was gaming 2 days in a row and I tell ya, my dreams were just BATTLETECH: Fighting against enemy 'Mechs on the battlefield, melting their armor down like hot butter, crushing their endo-steel entrails like a butcher... yeah!

The game gives a feeling like if you were reading Battletech books! I love that!

I am looking forward to all the updates!
(How am I able to apply it btw? I had the Humble Bundle download version...)

    9. Alex Tromba on

Loving the game. Very glad that I helped out via Kickstarter. Got a bug issue and a suggestion below.

Bug Report: During the Escaping Spy mission I was unable to complete it. I went back to an earlier save and redid it and still failed. Both failed attempts I attacked the 'Spy' and destroyed it in the same turn. I tried a third time and succeeded but I found that I attacked the 'Spy' on one turn but didn't destroy it. This allowed the plot to continue and have the spy 'attempt' to escape. When I destroyed him now the mission completed.

Suggestion: I really hope that there is going to be a way to players to have access to the tools and make up there own campaigns....this would be AMAZING....I would pay for an expansion that fully opened up everything.

      Thanks again.

Oh and for Paradox I don't like it!
Their terms for an account was not to my liking and thus I opted out from multiplayer as well as a kickstarter reward!
Not that I really care much about either but it along with not getting artbook/music game version and having to get that at the side from backerkit makes me less excited for your future kickstarter campaigns.

Loving the game and having a blast with no issues or bugs so far.

I noticed yesterday when watching a streamer that he had the same fps as I have. The difference is that he played in 1080p and I play in 4k and his computer is way better than mine apart from gpu that is the same. This was also just on the first mission so no slowdown from saves and such.
So look forward to performance fixes even if high fps is not the most important for a TBS game, it's a plus when things are smoooooth.

To create paradox account, you have to tell them your DOB, which is personal data I do not have to give to anyone against my will. So you see, HBS, it is not nice.

I can fake DOB of course, but the problem is that they probably intend to use it for account security, so this is a security hole if I fake it. Paradox started incredibly assinine about their forums - like initially they would only publish EU patch notes on their forum. This got better over the years, but they still want to control user feedback (instead of relying on steam and gog).

I appreciate that, but sorry guys, not at my expense. There are so many ways to fix it nicely, without pissing off your userbase. I guess the problem here is that Paradox finally got too big to quickly solve problems without screwing their users, on their side it is all probably legal dept, not my problem, pointy-haired managers and such. Pity.

    13. BadgerWI on

      I love the game!
Thanks for the hard work! Look forward to the new customization patch!

Now for the things I'd like to see added . :)
      1 ) multiplayer campaign
      2) Ability to swap out engines. Maybe not on the drop ship maybe you'd have to drop the mechs off on a planet with the type of facilities need.
3)larger maps with the ability to use up to a company of mechs. (I know that would mack for some long games)
      4) Being able to field vehicles.

The game is available on GOG but it's not DRM-free. Multiplayer and preorders/backers rewards (which are also for single player) are behind drm (Paradox account) and HBS refused to change that (and also failed to properly communicate that change when that decision has been made). While it could be ok for someone (that would probably be fine even with a Steam version), it would be factually wrong to call that a drm-free version as the availability of part of the content is not in control of the user.
I wonder if future dlcs, if they will be developed, will still require a Paradox account or not.

Enjoying the game laot and look forward to the update. Be cool if eventually enemies in non story missions could run away, surender or try to bribe you - be even more like the novels - esp if you could potnetilaly recruit pilots - worked for Greyson and Lori after all :)

Was a there an update where the Unseen could not now be used - as happily rocking them on MWO? What is Greyson / Bounty Hunter/ Natasha going to pilot without Marauders and Wrhammers?

      thanks again

Awesome game! Finished it last night (Wednesday May 2, 2018) and I found the story to be truly in line with many past novels. I personally felt I was part of the story instead of reading it.

      Some quality of life suggestions:
Instead of always starting out in a Blackjack, have the different nations you choose from during your initial bio be a different mech, such as Kurita starts off with a Panther, Deep Periphery a Locust, etc.

Randomize the beginning pilots and mechs - this will make the beginning missions require different tactics based on the loadouts of those starting mechs and pilots

Polish the Mechbay UI - a LOT! Massive rectangular boxes for equipment but extremely tiny inventory numbers? Scroll bars that snap back to the top when wanting SRMs? Very basic filters... Just a few that come to mind.

Adding various side mission scenarios with random twists would be wonderful.

Other than those glaring issues, overall 9/10!

    22. David Bruce on

It's been a blast. I am very happy to see there will be some updates to the game.

    23. Mark Tassin on

You know, I for one would be happy to kickstart additional story arcs within the same game universe. I.e. add-on stories with scripted missions that plug into the travel places and kill stuff sandbox we have with this game. :)

While the game was indeed praised by most reviewers, it must be said that it was not all good. The game had many issues at launch, some of them already known during the beta (which is hard to justify). There were issues with some of the extra contents and backers/preorders ones and some of them wasn't provided as expected. The kickstarter campaign didn't deliver its promises as a drm-free version of the game is not available (it's, all things considered, a failed campaign) and that's a huge stain on the developers reputation. While I got a refund for that and I must praise the support team for being quick in comply to that, it's not something to forget. This campaign will be remembered as the one in which HBS really broke the promise made to their backers. So it will be more difficult if they choose to use kickstarter again as this will be brought up. I hope they have learned from that and wish to see more of their games because up until now I had no complain.
Wish you the best in continuing supporting the game and its users.

    31. Sebastian D. on

Good to hear that you have a roadmap for patches. Unfortunately, for me the game didn't run very stable (I had about a dozen crashes in 3 years later and stopped playing shortly thereafter) despite having a system with decent specs.

    32. Battleshark on

You guys did an incredible job with this. Easysily the best strategy game since Dawn of War ll. Even better than XCOM. Keep rockin, you proved that strategy is far from dead. Thank you 😊

    33. Donghun Kang on

It's a very good news to hear.
I wonder, though, how will the update distributed to players who got DRM free version like me? If it's not available or too hard to get the update for DRM free version, I might regret choosing DRM free instead of steam or gog versions.

Love the games, HBS! I am very glad I backed this project - and that was based on your reputation with Shadowrun as I was generally unfamiliar with the BattleTech universe. I look forward to seeing this game grow in coming months and, hopefully, years! I am hoping that some of the earliest DLC/expansions will give us control of infantry, airstrikes, and AFVs so we can have a fully "combined arms" battlefield!

      Congratulations on the well-earned success!

Game great and I’m really happy you’ve had a great first week. Congrats to everyone involved!

Love the idea of actual expansions and hopefully performance will be improved.

Loving the game so far after about 5 hours of gameplay and the fact that it is evening challenging God of War for my time is impressive. Looking forward to the difficulty adjustment. Most missions are well dine, and the campaign in general is well balanced (in the “reload a couple saves back and grind” style of the original Homeworld... this is a positive), some missions can be described as “controller snapping frustration.” Overall, awesome work. Looking forward to the future.

Hats off to you guys. I'm enjoying the hell out of the game. Looking forward to being able to play more than one other player in co-op missions.

Good luck with those updates. Seems like this could be a great game, but it's crippled on my end w/ poor performance and constant crashing.

Seems like it also (desperately) needs an optimization pass. My PC is good enough that I seldom bother looking at system requirements, so I was absolutely floored when I went to your Steam page and saw Battletech was recommending 16GB or RAM. That's just nuts.

Sad to say I was expecting much more. It seems to be a game with a prominent title but only a shadow of the BT universe. I'm not seeing a dynamic economy, a good black market economy, Solaris gaming planet, any real selection of mechs for sale, the salvage system... I hate it. Did you really have to split the whole mech into three parts? Why can I only get to use four mechs on the battlefield? Why can't I deploy other vehicles. Why can't I capture another drop ship to use? Why can't I enter the map where I think would be more advantageous? Why am I getting mission briefings on the ground rather than prior to the mission? Why with a ship FULL OF mechs only bring four to a fight against vastly superior numbers? It seems in some respect the older games had better features why would you ignore all the great things about the past games? With all that said I think there VAST room for improvement and expansion. That's what I'd like to see.
